Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I first heard about this movie when posting the news about a remake of the original film on the way. I didn't think much of it until I started doin' more research and saw that a lot of people mentioned that the film was creepy. From what I remember it was really only aired on television back in 1973. I decided to check the movie and see what was so creepy about it, and it turns out there's really not much creepiness at all -- at least not for me anyway.

There were apparently little demons trapped inside an old fireplace in an old room under a big house and according to the movie, whoever opens up the fireplace and sets them free will be their next victim, which they drag back into the fireplace. What I didn't like about the movie was the fact that they never really went into explaining what the little demons were exactly. For all I know they might not actually even be demons, but they sure were small. They reminded me a bit of the little guys from the movie The Gate. Good film, by the way. The demon fellows would try anything to get the woman who freed them. They end up killing a few people and makes it seem like the woman is going crazy, because she's the only one that has seen them. They only come out when there's darkness, because they are apparently afraid of the light, which also seems to be their only weakness.

I can see how some people think of the movie as creepy because it does get a little weird when the little guys would stare at the woman and run around and make faint whispers to each other. I didn't really find that all too creepy though. It was cool either way. The acting was pulled off well and the effects weren't too bad, considering the year it came out. The little demons running around looked somewhat realistic. I didn't like the way they looked though, I thought the makeup effects for them were rather lame. Hopefully in the upcoming remake of this film they will look better. Although this movie didn't really pull off the creepiness for me, I'm sure it would for a few others. The reason for giving it a 6-rating and nothing lower was because I thought it was interesting and I liked a lot of the scenes in the film. I also fairly enjoyed the ending and hopefully in the remake they'll explain the origins of the demon fellows.

Didn't really live up to the talk of creepiness for me, but I still found the movie to be interesting. This film is rather hard to find, so most likely you wont see it, but try to at least catch the remake.
