From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

REVIEWER RATING:
8/10

There have been a lot of vampire films over the years, but nothing as special as "From Dusk Till Dawn". It's unique due to feeling like a Tarantino directed masterpiece, but then turns into 100% pure Robert Rodriguez. One of the reasons why I disliked it on my first viewing is because I was heavily invested into the opening scenes. I did not want them to end! When the characters enter the bar, I felt that it completely went downhill. I couldn't wrap my head around why the filmmakers made the decisions that they did. Why would anyone take an already amazing story, piss on it, then throw vampires in the mix? Because it's awesome, that's why.

Not only is "From Dusk Till Dawn" filled with movie legends, but it is so over the top that it demands repeated viewings. Every actor looks like they are having the time of their lives, especially George Clooney. Who would have thought that a future Oscar-nominated actor would be battling vampires with Tom Savini? Everyone gives solid and over the top performances here, but I wish they changed up the character of Scott. I didn't really care for the actor playing him. I know this film is about killing vampires, but they could have casted someone with a little acting experience. I think that may be why I didn't care for From Dusk Till Dawn too much to begin with. I saw it as a goofy film filled with over the top acting on top of an amazing thriller themed intro.

After later viewings, I began to enjoy the film more and more. I started to appreciate the supporting characters, the callbacks to previous horror films and the overload of gore. The dialogue is perfect and cheesy and I am convinced it is a 80's horror film in disguise. It is one of the best vampire films to come out in recent decades because it completely different than anything before it. Where else would you get a Tarantino styled story mixed with Robert Rodriguez's 1990's insane mind?

Definitely check out From Dusk Till Dawn if you haven't already. If you love 80's horror films that are filled with cheesy acting, over the top practical effects and cringe worthy, but yet still awesome, dialogue then this movie is for you.
