Event Horizon (1997)

REVIEWER RATING:
8/10

A rescue crew investigates a spaceship that disappeared into a black hole and has now returned...with someone or something new on-board.

If you haven't seen Event Horizon by now you are in for a real treat. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, this 1997 sci-fi horror film will have you on the edge of your seat until the very end. If you can get past the cheesy CGI, come on it was 1997, and the sometimes corny dialogue then you will have a great time. The cast really makes this film as it is composed with Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Sean Pertwee, and Jason Isaacs.

At first glance, there isn't much to this film. The first few minutes can be a chore to get through as the CGI is REALLY bad. It is 1997, so I forgive it, but it is very dated. Luckily, this doesn't last throughout the entire film as we get a lot of cool practical effects. Another thing is that there are a lot of cliches as the film opens and you can tell it is heavily inspired by the Alien series. The "Alien nostalgia" quickly fades as it morphs into one of the best ideas for a sci-fi horror film that I have ever seen.

The story is almost addicting as it unfolds. Personally, I am a huge astronomy nerd so I kind of freak out when I hear a spaceship went through a black hole and came out with something else on board. The scientific facts may not all be there, but this sets up a super cool premise for a sci-fi film. The possibilities are endless and sort of gives me a Doom video game feel to it. One thing that I truly craved is more information on where the Event Horizon actually went. The footage of the previous crew looked stunning and I wonder if there are any deleted scenes expanding on that.

We wouldn't have such a cool movie without Sam Neill being mysterious and Laurence Fishburne being Laurence Fishburne. Those two alone make up Event Horizon to me. They have a great chemistry together being polar opposites. Neill is a coward and Fishburne just wants to get home. It makes for some great cinema. Besides Sean Pertwee and Jason Isaacs the other cast screams 1997 to me. What I mean is that they are a pretty cliché bunch and the problem I had the most is with the character Cooper. He sort of becomes a cartoon as the film progresses. His dialogue can be funny at times, but it gets pretty ridiculous.

Event Horizon is a true classic. This film is almost 20 years old and it shows. You'll get a kind of Alien feel to it and some of the CGI is terrible, but it has an amazing story that will keep you sucked in. The scares are heavy and most of the acting is spot on. You'll go in scratching your head, but come out buying it on Amazon. Event Horizon is a film that cannot be missed.
