Hush (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

"A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window."

Netflix has been treating us horror fans in a negative way recently. They took down a lot of the 80's cheese that we all crave. Instead, we get a bunch of "same-old" films made in the last few years. Most of them being forgettable, but a few that really stand out. The film that stands out the most for me would be "Hush" (2016).

As you can already tell by reading the plot, this film is quite intense. Ever get the feeling you are being watched only to see no one is there? Well, after this film, you will be double checking you are actually alone. Sure, you may not be deaf, but "Hush" does a great job on upping the creepiness and toning down on the clichés.

The reason why this film works so well is its simplicity. The filmmakers could have added a whole bunch of unnecessary characters and over the top gore, but they chose to keep it simple and to the point. There is a crazy guy in a mask stalking a deaf woman. It's literally all you need to know. In fact, the film is so simple that it only contains about 15 minutes of dialogue. The viewer doesn't need the movie read to them, they need to be thrown into the situation with the character Maddie. You need to step into her shoes and wonder what you would do in her situation. The lack of dialogue is really quite impressive. Films are rarely made like this nowadays, especially Horror.

The 15 minutes of actual dialogue is impressive, but what really grabbed my attention is the attention to detail. The decisions Maddie makes are not the stereotypical, "No don't go in there!" I think that if I were in her shoes that I would be making the same choices. Sure, I am not deaf or female, but what she chooses to do is understandable in most of the situations. The climax of the film was the most fun and contained most of the dialogue. Without giving too much away, I would say that it was completely unexpected and added a nice touch to an already impressive film.

This film is a must watch. Hush is not perfect as it does have some very minor pacing issues in the middle. However, those pacing issues can be forgiven due to the great, yet simple, story. The climax was worth the watch alone. If you are into an above standard new age horror flick, then watch Hush immediately.
