Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2003)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

The original creator and director of the previous Ju-On films, once again returns in this sequel to the theatrical Japanese remake. Although the first was a remake, this one isn't. In the original sequel it continued from the first with the same characters and such, but this one takes on a whole new twist. Although it does continue from the first, there are all new characters and events going on, and that makes for a very worthy sequel. I found the first Grudge a little scarier, but this sequel isn't too far behind. It does manage to have some creepy scenes here and there, but I thought it was more action-based than the first. I guess that was felt because it was mostly taken place outside of the house.

In this movie the story really has no relation to the first aside from the basic theme. It starts out with a couple driving home one night. The female is a pregnant actress who just recently wrapped up a shoot in the notorious house. Apparently a TV production crew wanted a familiar face to host a horror-themed show that covers the legend behind the supposedly haunted house. Well it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the crew (including the actress) have marked their death, because the movie (like the first) tells the stories of each individual by going backwards, leading to the events of the crew just arriving in the house, then brings us back to present day.

Some scares from the first are used again in this flick, but with a slightly different twist, so it's not exactly the same-old. Although I didn't find neither of the two movies scary, they did manage to dish out some solid creepy scenes. I think in terms of scares, the first hits the mark, but in terms of a more interesting story, the second gets the cake, but of course that's only my opinion. It's a solid sequel that doesn't rehash from the original. I enjoyed it.

A good follow-up of the previous film. Manages to give some creepy scenes and new stuff the original didn't offer. First is superior in the scares department, but I liked this better entertainment-wise. Worth a watch, especially for fans.
