Love Object (2003)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

I heard about this indie flick some time ago, but never thought I'd get around to checking it. Either way, I'm glad I did, cuz I enjoyed it. The movie will be a mixed bag for people. It's very similar to the movie May, which also centered around a strange, secluded individual that forms a love-obsession. Considering both movies are similar-themed, and basically the same pace, those who enjoyed May (like me) will most likely also enjoy this. Also, not only are both movie similar, but they both also lead a nice young, and promising, cast of actors. In this movie the main star is Desmond Harrington (Ghostship, Wrong Turn) and Melissa Sagemiller (Soul Survivors).

The story focuses on a lonely and self-occupied technical writer of a company, that discovers a site that sells realistic-looking sex dolls for $10,000 bucks. He purchases one and evntually begins to form a strange bond with it. Comparing the doll to a co-worker, he starts dressing it up like her, and eventually begins to treat it as a live human being. Once his obsession tranfers from the doll to his co-worker, the "doll" gets jealous and forces the young man to choose her or the "live woman". Could the doll be alive, or is the man slowly going insane?

The movie is very slow-paced, but it kept me interested mainly due to the excellent performance by Desmond. It was interesting to see him slowly go crazy due to his strange sexual obsessions and I was curious to see what happens if the live woman discovers the doll. Much like May, the movie doesn't turn towards "horror" until around the end, when things get a little bloody, and yes, even gory. Like I said above, the movie will be a mixed-bag for many people -- you'll either love it, or hate it. I for one found it to be a good watch. I believe Lion's Gate owns the distrubtion rights in the US and will be releasing it July 13th on DVD.

A movie very similar to May, which you as a viewer will either love or hate. If you liked that movie, then you'll probably like this.
