Madman (1981)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

The movie starts off with these people around a camp fire telling stories. They eventually get to the madman marz story, about a farmer who slaughters his family for no apparent reason. After the stories they head back to camp and well, the rest is pretty much predictable. Madman goes about killing them one by one.

What I didn't like about the film was the whole thing where one person disappears so they send out someone to find that person, then that person doesn't come back so they send out someone else to find that person. I thought that was rather stupid, and it goes on like that for a while. Another thing I didn't like was the fact that madman was really big and there's no real explanation as to why he was too big.

What I did like about the movie was the fact that we don't really get a good look at the madman character. He was always covered by shadows or something. Sometimes it's best to leave it to the imagination. There were some scenes that were kind of creepy, like the scene where a guy sees someone coming down from a tree late at night and all you can make out was the shadow of the person. I thought that was kind of creepy, because of the fact that someone was watching them and them not knowing about it. That's always cool.

One thing about the madman character that I thought was funny was the noises he would make. He would make weird grunting or grumbling noises every now and then. I'm not sure what the point of that was, but it always brought a quick laugh from me every time I heard him do that. There were a few plot holes and the acting was fair for a 80s flick. The directing wasn't bad. I liked how the whole film takes place in one night. We don't get to see daylight at all, and I think that was pulled off well. I can't believe they gave this guy his own theme song though -- quite hilarious. Not to mention the ending, that was just silly.

I would have given this film a lower rating, but I thought it wasn't a bad film. I mean it's okay, and I wasn't bored by any of it. There was an average amount of gore. A little decapitation here and there always works well.

Not a bad 80s slasher. A few plot holes, but entertaining none-the-less. The madman character was quite interesting and funny at the same time. Check this film out if you're into Friday the 13th wannabes.
