Maniac Cop (1988)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

It’s been a while since I've seen a Maniac Cop film. I don't think I ever got the chance to see the first until now. It was just as I expected it to be. The movie starts off with a cop going around killing innocent people -- somewhat of a vigilante cop of sorts. The news gets a hold of it and people in the city begin to fear cops.

A little more into the movie the maniac cop decides to put the blame on another cop (Bruce Campbell). I never knew Bruce played in the movie until a few weeks ago, so it made me want to see the move even more. Bruce is the man. Anyway, Bruce gets the blame and is forced to prove his innocence and expose who the real maniac cop is.

The film slows down in parts, but it kept my interest through most of it. There were some nice deaths and the story and acting were aight. There could have been more gore in the death scenes maybe. I don't remember the sequels much, so I can't say if this is better than them. I remember the sequels did have a little more going on though. Robert Z'Dar, who plays the maniac cop, does an excellent job making the character a little intimidating. The directing wasn't bad -- this coming from the director of the original Maniac film and the low-budget Uncle Sam.

The story is a bit predictable and so was the ending, but most 80s movies are like that. I would have given the movie a higher-rating, but I guess I expected more to the movie -- more action or something. I was a little let down by that, but basically it's not a bad film in the end. I haven't heard anything on another sequel to the series. I don't really remember what happened to the maniac cop character at the end of part 3. I think it's better off being a trilogy anyway.

Good movie to come out of the 80s. Known as a classic "horror" film to some. I thought it was pretty good, but I expected a bit more. Check this out if you haven't already.
