Night of the Living Dorks (2004)

REVIEWER RATING:
7/10

Yes, it is apparently possible to capture the fun comedy-horror flare that was made famous in the 80's. Night of the Living Dorks is a German zombie film that came out back in 2004 and has finally made its round here in the US recently via Anchor Bay. Had it not been for its US release, I probably never would have seen or even heard of this flick. Going in with low expectations, I'm glad I watched the film, because I found myself enjoying every minute of it. It's clear the filmmakers tried to bring back that silly horror-comedy that has since been rather stale lately.

The film follows a few nerds as they seek help from a group of Goths and wanna-be Satanists for some sort of love potion. Apparently one of the nerds has a crush on a popular high school girl and hoped to find a way to win her heart. Instead, the nerds get a face full of zombie ashes, which turns them into the walking dead the next day. With their new found zombie strength, the nerds become the talk of the school after beating up the "tough guy". It appears that becoming zombies was the best thing to happen to them, that is, until one of them goes out of control with hunger and revenge on all those bullies who did him wrong and decides to dispose of them one by one.

I had fun watching this, and even laughed out at some of the silly antics the zombie-nerds get into. Like for instance, when one of the dorks is finally going to score with a chick until one of his testicles rolls down his pants due to his body deteriorating. Obviously this movie isn't going to win any praise in the originality department, but it's clear that it's not what the filmmakers were going after. Playing homage to the various classic zombie films, with a dab of gross-out humor and a mix of any number of teen comedies from the 80's and you'll get Night of the Living Dorks.

A fun horror-comedy that plays homage to the teen comedies of 80's, with a zombie twist. Worth a check for something fun and entertaining.
