Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

The live-action Resident Evil franchise comes to an end with this reportedly final installment in the long running series (until the next movie), which picks up after the events of 2012's Retribution. The movie naturally sees the return of Milla Jovovich as the seemingly indestructible Alice, who is essentially a duel-gun-wielding superhero. Alice learns that an airborne antivirus exists that can kill anything infected by the T-virus and possibly save the last of humankind (we're just finding this out now!?), but she must head back to where all this mess began in order to retrieve it--Raccoon City or more specifically, The Hive.

Along the way Alice meets up with Claire Redfield once again, who has somehow found a new band of uninteresting survivors to team up with. The group makes their way to The Hive, fighting all sorts of enemies and avoiding a variety of traps the farther they go. Naturally we learn nothing of these new characters as they simply exist to die and fill up the running time. The pacing is pretty solid, offering some nice action right from the start, which is apparently the trade-off to proper character development.

Luckily the film makes up for its weak characters with some pretty decent creatures. We get a handful of different monsters that our characters encounter, with each boasting their own unique looks and characteristics. The FX is also surprisingly decent here, as it's clear that the filmmakers really wanted to try to end the series the best they could, showing off some impressive CG (for the series anyway) during certain scenes.

Ultimately, despite how bad the series has gotten, this turned out to be a surprisingly decent end to the live action installments and is an improvement over the last couple sequels. Yes the writing is still pretty terrible, but we've come to expect that from these movies. At least it wasn't bombarded with a lot of nonsense slow motion this time 'round and the story ended somewhat properly, despite being predictable right until the very end (of course it would end that way *rolls eyes*).

If you've watched the past sequels then you might as well finish it off with this supposedly final installment. The writing is still bad and the movie offers nothing we haven't already seen, but at least they've refined the CG and delivered a variety of neat looking monsters. It's a decent film if your expectations are set low and I found it a surprise improvement over the last couple sequels (I was never bored or annoyed by this). Either way, if you love the movies, you'll love this, but if you hate'em then this won't change your mind, though it is more tolerable than some of its predecessors.
