Valentine (2001)

REVIEWER RATING:
6/10

I know a lot of people don't like this film, but I thought it wasn't bad. It wasn't original, but at least it was entertaining. Reminds me a lot of the many 80's slasher films that deals with someone getting revenge on people who did them wrong.

The film starts off with a group of girls who've known each other for years going to a funeral because one of their friends was killed. They soon begin getting strange valentine cards that foreshadows their demise. Like I said before the plot isn't very original and the killer had some resemblance to Michael Myers from the Halloween films. Director Jamie Blanks was obviously playing homage to classic slasher films and wasn't going for anything original.

What I liked about the movie was the death scenes. They were pretty cool and the mask the killer wore wasn't bad. There aren't any good scares, but some suspenseful scenes here and there; nothing too major that scares the audience. What I didn't like about the movie was the fact that I was able to easily guess the killer in the first 10 minutes of the film. It just seemed too easy. There was obviously supposed to be some sort of twist at the end, but I wasn't surprised with what happened.

I thought the acting was good and I liked the cast for the film -- lot of hot chicks in this; very nice. I'm glad there wasn't any nudity though. That's too common and I think would have ended up hurting the film in the end. I would have given the movie a higher rating, but due to lack of originality I had to keep it at a 6-rating. That's still pretty good though. Too bad there weren't any deleted scenes on the DVD.

I enjoyed this film, it wasn't very original, but entertaining none-the-less. The killer was easy to guess, though. I recommend any fan of classic slashers to check this movie out.
