| Dark Water This is a remake of an original Japanese film by Ringu director Hideo Nakata that came out in 2002, which is the year I reviewed it. It wasn't until over a year ago that word of a remake surfaced. I have no idea why they wanted to remake the film aside from the fact that maybe the producers were hoping for another Ring at the box office. Boy were they wrong. The film wasn't loved by critics and it didn't make much of a dent at the box office, only opening at $9-million at over 2,500 theaters. Although the cast is pretty solid, it's the promises of thrills and scares that really turned audiences off when instead all they got was a drama about a troubled mother in the middle of a custody battle for her little girl; with a strange leak and a little ghost girl thrown in the mix. I liked the original movie. It had creepy scenes and it wasn't so focused with the drama behind the mother and father. Although it was the same-old from Japanese director Hideo Nakata, it's still a lot better than some pesky leak and a lot of black water, which is what we receive in this film. The story follows Jennifer Connelly as a distraught mother whose forced to relocate after troubles with her husband. Her daughter and her move into an old and run-down apartment building, where the leaks on the ceiling isn't the only thing to worry about. As they settle in strange things begin to happen -- a mysterious backpack keeps turning up, the daughter begins talking to an imaginary friend, and the mother starts to see visions of a little girl. As time goes on, we learn that the annoying leak on the ceiling may have something to do with a missing little girl. The storyline really hasn't changed a whole lot from the original, except for the addition of more dramatic scenes, which makes me wonder why they even bothered remaking it. Although the film is very slow and has little to do with horror, it kept my interest. OVERALL Comments Page 1 of 1:
