Do You Like Hitchcock?

Italian horror maestro Dario Argento returns after his previous tripe known as The Card Player, which made me lose faith in the man's directorial capabilities. How foolish of me! With Dario's latest film entitled Do You Like Hitchcock? A TV-movie made for an Italian channel, that's part of an 8-movie deal each playing homage to Hitchock. Dario's film is the first of the series, in which he homage with various references to his numerous films, more notably Strangers on a Train and Rear Window, -- being that our lead has a tendency of spying on his neighbor, which is where all this trouble started! Since Dario is playing homage, he doesn't use his usual blend of in-your-face violence and gore (although there are a couple bloody scenes), Dario mostly stays away from his usual style. Normally when director's go a different route than their routine, especially when we know them best for it, they tend to fail. In this case, Dario succeeds in delivering an interesting, mind-boggling, thriller.

The story follows our nerdy lead "Giulio", who’s doing a thesis on German expressionism, but spends most of his time spying on his gorgeous neighbor and hanging out at the local video store with his friend. Giulio becomes obsessed with the murder across the street after he's convinced the woman, whom he spies on, made a pact with another woman to murder her overbearing mother, in exchange for another murder. Although Giulio doesn't have much to go on except for the fact that he saw the two together a couple times, and they rented Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, which is a film about two unlikely people who make a deal to kill someone in exchange for another murder. Regardless, Giulio is convinced and he'll stop at nothing to prove it, even if it means losing his girlfriend.

As I stated before, the film isn't in the violent fashion that Dario is known for, but it still works as a captivating thriller. I'm not quite sure when this film will hit DVD shelves in the US, but I would assume sometime later this year. Europe is currently the only place that has it out on DVD right now.

OVERALL

Not the usual Dario Argento movie, but a good thriller none-the-less
. Worth a check if you're looking for a Hitchcockian-type movie.
