The House That Dripped Blood

I checked this old horror flick after getting sent a copy from the guys at Lion's Gate. I really didn't know much about the movie before seeing it, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I found it to be a pretty decent flick in the end. The story is about a Scotland Yard investigator, who looks into the mysterious deaths behind an unoccupied house. This is where we're told four "terrifying" stories that all revolve around the house in question.

The first story is called Method for Murder and it's about a writer who purchases the old home in order to help inspire him with his new book. It does indeed help him, because immediately after moving in, he starts writing about a murderous character, which the author ends up seeing in and around the house, which ends up questioning his sanity and whether he can distinguish fact from fiction. I actually liked this story a bit, because the character the writer came up with actually looked a little creepy and seeing him around the house would even freak me out, and I don't scare easy. Although the climax is predictable, its still an entertaining story with good performances.

The second story is called Waxworks and stars veteran actor Peter Cushing as the new tenant in the house, who takes a trip to the town and into a wax museum where he encounters a wax figure of a woman who he finds absolutely stunning and so very life-like. He even shows her off to his friend who comes to visit him. Eventually he becomes somewhat obsessed with the figure until the horrific truth behind the wax woman is revealed. I didn't like this story too much, because I found it too predictable. Although the wax figure does look a little creepy after you stare at it for a while, I found the story to be a little "dry" in my opinion. Either way, Peter Cushing offers another excellent performance.

The third story stars another veteran actor Christopher Lee. This story is called Sweets to the Sweet and is about a very strict single father (Lee), who hires a nanny to look after his little girl, who has an unusual fear of fire. Little-by-little we are revealed more and more about the family and its dark past. I liked this story, because I didn't know what to expect from it, which kept me interested from the start. It's probably the more original story of the four and possibly even the most intriguing.

The last and final story is called The Cloak and it's about a pushy actor who has a role in a horror film playing a vampire. While in search for a new cloak to enhance his role, he comes across an authentic one in an antic shop. Despite being warned of what would happen if he put on the cloak, the actor takes it and discovers that while wearing the cloak he's transformed into a real vampire. He attempts to use it to his advantage for his role, but ends up encountering dire consequences. This is the most silly and un-scary story of the four. It's predictable and was on a totally different tone from the previous three stories. Although it's interesting, the silly and predictable ending makes it the more undesirable story.

In the end I thought it was an overall enjoyable horror flick. I also liked how the stories didn't specifically involve the house, which made it more interesting than just being in one location. I decided to give it a 6-rating, because all the stories are enjoyable in their own way, but none of them were what I'd refer to as particularly scary or good.

OVERALL

A decent watch if you're into horror flicks that tell stories. I found this movie to be surprisingly decent, and although three of the four stories are predictable it's a good watch for something interesting, but don't bother if you're looking for something scary.
