Secret Window
Director David Koepp is back into the horror/thriller genre with this flick. I remember his last theatrical horror flick was Stir of Echoes, which I thought was an excellent ghost tale. So does this flick still show that he hasn't lost his touch in the genre? Yes and no. The movie does succeed in giving some suspenseful scenes, but in the end it just became too predictable for its own good. Despite that, it was still a good watch.
The story for this flick is about a successful writer (Johnny Depp), who after finding his wife in bed with another man, secludes himself in an isolated cabin in the woods. In the middle of a shaky divorce, he spends his days sleeping on the couch and eating Doritos, until one day a strange man (John Turturro) comes knocking on the door claiming his story was stolen by the writer and that if he doesn't change the ending to it that he'll suffer dire consequences.
I think had this movie not had great actors like Johnny Depp and John Turturro that it wouldn't have been the same movie and I probably wouldn't have liked it as much as I did. Although the movie is pretty slow-paced, it does manage to keep the audiences interest by pitting Depp's character in odd situations where he has to figure out a way to outsmart Turturro's character and hopefully be rid of him all-together before any further harm is done. The movie isn't much for scares, but then again I'm sure that wasn't exactly the intent here. I never read the novella by Stephen King that this flick was based on, so sadly I can't compare the two together, but I'm sure like most book-to-movie adaptations, the book is better.
I enjoyed the movie -- it kept my interest, despite it being rather slow-paced. The biggest complaint I have for the movie would have to be the predictable ending that I saw earlier on in the film. Other than that, I was happy seeing this. I wonder what's next on Koepp's slate.
OVERALL
Without
Depp or Turturro the movie would have been nothing. Interesting, but slow-paced
and the ending was rather predictable. Still a good watch in my opinion,
just don't expect a lot.
