Snuff Movie

Wow, what a stupid movie. It's hard to believe that director Bernard Rose also did Candyman back in 1992. You'd expect this type of movie to come out of some low-budget straight-to-DVD hack instead. From the pics I posted on UHM a while back, I knew this was going to be no Candyman, because, it's incredibly low-budget, and it was very apparent from the start. We also have to deal with the questionable acting from our leads and nauseating dream sequences that seem to only be present to use up the running time. The social commentary Bernerd attempts to pass on screen is lost until one our leads plainly explains it out to the audience to help them understand things better, but this is right before we're delivered one of the most confusing, unexpected and pointless ending I've come across.

The film follows a washed-out director and a group of wanna-be actors as they land a role in his film playing the real-life characters (in the movie anyway) of the victims and killers that committed murder in the director's home many years ago, essentially murdering the mother of his child, whom is now grown up, but is mentally handicapped. The actors learn shortly after moving into the mansion that there are cameras set up all over the home to record their every moment and played to a live audience via the World Wide Web. Naturally, they are unaware that the "fake" murders that are about to be committed will actually be real, essentially making the movie the director is making into what is known as a "snuff", where-as real murders are committed on film.

On the plus side there's a lot of nudity and decent blood, although the gore and deaths were incredibly cheesy, especially one where a man is getting stabbed, yet we can obviously tell the blade isn't going into his stomach. Regardless of whatever message Bernard attempts to bring across, I pretty much lost interest when the slow-pacing and bad acting became the only thing apparent on screen.

OVERALL

A huge downgrade for Bernard Rose, going from Candyman to a straight-to-DVD crapfest. Thanks to the horrible and confusing ending I really disliked this film. Avoid this like the plague people!
