Undead or Alive
First-time director Glasgow Phillips decides to tackle the overdone zombie genre by giving us something we don't normally see in the particular genre: a western setting. The setting was a nice change of pace and I figured it being a comedy couldn't hurt anything, so I watched the film with an open mind, and although I didn't really find much of the comedy all that funny, I was at least entertained throughout the 90-minute running time, which is more than what most straight-to-DVD films usually do for me.
The ridiculous story basically follows an army deserter named "Elmer" (James Denton) and local idiot cowboy "Luke Budd" (Chris Kattan), who flees a small town after stealing money from the crooked sheriff. The sheriff then puts together a posse and heads out in search of the two men. Of course, before the posse can find the men they come across a local zombie, whose first to be stricken by Apache warrior Geronimo’s curse on the white man. The curse turns men into the living dead, and the curse quickly spreads throughout the town, leaving a cowardly preacher to fend for himself. Now the posse are gunslingin' zombies, who are as quick to bite a man's neck as they are to draw their gun.
The movie offers decent production values for a straight-to-DVD feature and the effects and look of the zombies aren't that bad. As far as gore goes, we get some neck bites and the standard gnawing off limbs and other parts of the body. Chris Kattan offers a lot of the comedy as the idiot sidekick and wannabe outlaw, while hottie Navi Rawat (Feast) plays the ass-kickin' Native American, who somehow falls in love with Kattan *rolls eyes*. Despite most of the failed comedy, I was entertained by most of the feature and the situations our leads would find themselves in.
OVERALL
A decent watch, despite most of the failed comedy. The film kept my interest and offered slightly above-average production values for a straight-to-DVD premiere. Worth a rent, but don't expect much.
