White Noise
This movie pretty much came out of nowhere for a lot of fans (including myself) of the genre. How it managed to slip under the radar so well is beyond me, but it wasn't listed on UHM until a few months before its release. The film made a decent amount at the box office the first weekend, pulling in $24,000,000, which is a pretty good number. Though, I'm sure with a lot of the mixed (mostly negative) reviews it’s been getting, it will soon decline as the days go on. I personally liked the movie. Sure it was slow and didn't have a lot of stuff in terms of scares, but I was intrigued by the plot and I found this EVP to be an interesting concept. I've heard of it in the past, but this is the first time I've actually seen a movie about it.
The story basically follows Michael Keaton's character as he goes through a horrible ordeal with his loving wife dying in a tragic accident. As he thinks he's moved on from her a man comes up to him with claims that the wife is attempting to contact him via something called EVP, which is basically a reference to how those who passed on try to contact the living through electronic devices such as the radio. Of course Keaton is skeptical until he encounters such phenomena himself. He then seeks guidance from the strange man, who then welcomes him to a world of EVP, which eventually makes Keaton's character become obsessed with trying to get contact with his deceased wife.
I believe many were expecting a little too much from this movie, which explains a lot of disappointed viewers. The trailers made the movie to seemingly be a scary "thrill-ride" of a movie, which is obviously wasn't. No, it's mostly a story-driven flick that merely has a few "scare" scenes thrown in. It does, however, pick up a little towards the end, but sadly by then a lot of viewers might have lost interest. I have to agree with a friend of mine, who said the beginning took too long to get to where it was headed, but I suppose the director wanted to really set the mood and how Keaton's character was feeling. Either way, the movie turned off a lot of people with it's slow pace, but luckily I wasn't one of them. I was interested from the start to the end. Although the ending is rather predictable and somewhat rushed, it was still kinda cool none-the-less. In the end I think this movie is a mixed bag in terms of those who like and dislike it.
OVERALL
Although many may disagree, I found the movie to be pretty interesting. Very slow-paced with little in terms of scares, but a solid story with a nice performance by Keaton. Worth a check if you're into ghost flicks or something that isn't all about the scares.
