Does anybody know about this film yet? They showed a teaser of it before Transformers. It was set up like a usual going away party, but then some big monster, that you cannot see in the teaser, starts attacking the city. It looks pretty cool, but I have no idea what it's about.

its about a giant monster that attacks the city and is supposedly told from the point of view of the people trying to survive the attack.

I just found it weird lol. I never got into the H.P.Lovecraft stuff, but I saw Dagon the other day and decided to make a list of books and movies that dealt with that stuff and watch them to see if they interest me after all.

So I guess it's kinda cool. We'll have to wait and see.

... And that could work !
Im all for leaving things up to the imagination, but for this I want to see at;east enough of the beast to get an idea of what these ppl are running from.
I know that may be difficult because your running away from the thing, as upposed to running towards, lol ...
but i think it can be done.
Perhaps running someplace to get the higher ground and getting a good zoom on the fucking thing lol.

I love the trail in the water thats going towards the city. Implying something big came from the ocean. Abrams said its not a Godzilla movie and it has nothing to do with Lovecraft. He just wanted to make a monster movie thats as iconic to American audiences as Godzilla is to Japan. SWEET!!!! I personally think he'll go with something sort of like the Behemoth. The beast from the bible that has something to do with the apocalypse or whatever. Sort of like in that old movie The Giant Behemoth.

According to the Bible the Behemoth looked like a hippopotamus. Nothing against the Hippo as I am sure it would kick my ass in a street fight but that would suck balls if this was the creature Abrams invisioned as a american icon. I mean the hippo is from Africa, no? At least pick something from the America's like a Giant Moose or a Box Turtle.

I'm kinda hoping they don't show the monster in its entirety at all. It would be so ironic if at this point in horror cinema where filmmakers say, "let's show them something more horrific than they've ever seen," with every movie they make and the one movie to come out to TRULY scare the everloving shit out of its audience is a movie that shows nothing. Maybe that wouldn't work so well with this movie, but I'm just hoping that happens eventually in this decade, it would be a nice reassurance to directors and cinematographers I think, there's not much of that mysterious and really talented camerawork around these days - with manipulation of shadows and stuff like that. A lot of the horror movie fans I've said this to have given me shit about it, but I think Signs was amazing, and mainly because of its tease about showing us the alien.

It's produced by one of the writers of Lost, which is interesting. Just like LOST, Abrams has managed to keep people on the edge of their seats about the whole time, and will continue to do so until it comes out. And once they see the movie, audiences will feel the same way they'll feel after the series finale of LOST. Angry.

30 mill budget. Got monster idea when in a toy store in japan. Mostly shot on Coney Island.

The voltron rumors scare me...

"the only official site that had been found was 1-18-08.com. At the site, a collection of time-coded photos are provided to visitors to piece together a series of events and interpret their meanings. "

"Abrams however did not reveal an official title for the film and also denied that it would be called Monstrous, a rumored title at the time."

"Attendees of the Paramount panel were given T-shirts featuring the "Slusho!" logo."

I saw the picture of the beast. Well the thing that goes by really really quick in the trailer anyway. It looks like a dinosaur. While I'm cool with that, I was hoping they'd go alittle nuts with the creature design and create somethin really really cool. The little monsters are yet to be seen though. They could be cool. And I could be completely off on the creature design. I mean it was a quick shot.

Well anyways I'm still lookin forward to it. And from the pics I've seen the movie isn't entirely filmed all "blair witch" style. Which I'm happy with. I think that kind of look adds to a film, but I dont want the whole movie to be that way.

I read an interview where J.J. said the entire movie would actually be from a "first person" perspective. I was alil disappointed at first, but after reading the entire article I kind of think it may actually be cooler from the way Abrams put it when he was discussing it. http://movies.ign.com/articles/841/841703p1.html

I also found a link that shows what some people think the monster may look like. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g293/Maffusse/monster.jpg The big whale looking thing is obviously the creature that comes from the water, and the smaller crab looking creature is supposedly a parasite that can fuck people up and I guess make them explode like that one chick we saw in the trailer.

ASoron0424
12-22-2007, 08:33 PM
That drawing is incredible, I'd love for the monster to look like that; however I really don't wanna see the monster in its entirety. It would be refreshing for them to take the old route and keep the monster off screen. As disappointing as I guess a lot of people would find it, in the event that they're looking for a good and truly scary PG-13, which I doubt, it would be great. But I think even for an R rated movie it would work well (judging from those images of the girl exploding in the tent, I'm guessing it'll be R.

And really, who the fuck intends to make an even remotely authentic end-of-the-world disaster movie where nobody says "fuck" more than once and there isn't rampant pre-apocolypse sex going on everywhere - that really bothered me with movies like Armageddon and The Day After Tomorrow.

Just got back from seeing it and it was EXCELLENT. It was so much better then Blair witch project and Godzilla remake. The way they did it with a hold hand camera was so well done and realistic. This is probably the best monster movie I've seen in the long time. Best movie so far in 2008. I can't wait to see it again.

well this movie BLOWS. Thats right. IT SUCKED! The entire movie is the guys hand held camera so everytime something exciting happens it shakes 100 miles an hour so you never see whats going on. And that doesnt add "tention" that adds "annoyance". The monster is some fake lookin CGI piece of crap, and so are the little ones it spawns. This giant monster shows up out of nowhere, and for some reason it can spawn these little creatures that sound like donald duck when their mad.

And the idiot holding the camera. GIVE ME A BREAK. Hmm point the camera at these people I see all the time or that big ass fucking monster? Well me personally I'd go with the big ass fucking monster but apparently the camera guy didn't share my opinion. The first 15 minutes or so of this movie are boring as hell. And the ending? well the ending is just really bad. Just dumb. If your gonna go and try to make your "giant monster attacks new york" movie all realistic with a hand held camera, all your critters being crappy CG is probably a really bad idea. Now granted a lot of shots of a giant monster attacking the city will need to be CG. But every single shot? no. Not to mention the guys camera goes through hell and still works. I found that laughable, and the fact the military never took it away from him even when he went into their little HQ. I thought that was odd.

So if this movie breathes new life into the monster movie genre then I'm happy about that. Cuz I love a good monster movie. Key word being GOOD. This movie was not that. I've been waiting for this movie ever since I saw the trailer on Transformers and good lord was I let down. Crappy special effects and a really really really shaky camera is all this movie boils down to. If you don't like either one of those 2 things. Skip it skip it skip it! This movie was a good idea on paper...yeah....on paper. If the documentary style of the movie had been scrapped this movie might have been atleast watchable. So if you've heard this comparison its dead on true. This flick is Blair Witch meets the U.S. Godzilla remake. And yes thats as bad as it sounds.

Rather than type a long review I'm gonna say that I disagree completely. I'm not gonna type out a lengthy counter review but instead say simply put, either the video camera concept is gonna work for you, or it's gonna turn you off completely, that is the key deciding factor of your like or dislike of this film.

well I dont hate everything, but you were right that I wasn't gonna like this flick. But honestly it wasn't the CG monsters that made me hate it. The more I think about it it was the camera work. Had it not been for that I think I might have atleast enjoyed myself. I think it would have been a better idea to go back and forth between their camera and something else. A bit disappointing for all the hype, I think had there not been so much craze, there'd be less people walking away so pissed. I didn't think it was bad, I actually enjoyed it a lot, though I think it was terribly unfortunate that we got such a drawn out look at the monster's face.

***Spoilers***(you're a fucktard if you're reading this thread if you don't want to see any)

I have a suspicion there may have been more than just one monster, perhaps more than two even. We know about the one that was able to walk through Manhattan, and we assume it was also the one that threw the statue head, but nothing on it looks like a tentacle, and the thing that caused the Brooklyn bridge to collapse really looked like a tentacle. And then you have the central park scene at the end where Hud dies. First of all, the monster he sees that is above him is much smaller than whatever they saw before, and second they would have seen or at least heard the monster coming from some direction. I believe the central park monster was altogether different.

SPOILERS

I've never been put off by hand-held type filming. This, Blair Witch, St. Petersburg Experiment, I've always had a quick enough eye I guess.

I was kind of let down though, for all the hype this got. The monsters could have been better developed because they looked like something a ten year old dreamed up. And I hated the ending. That was nonsense as well.

My biggest qualm was that nothing was explained. I mean, I know it was only supposed to be from the group's POV, but damn. No answers to anything. Where'd the monster come from, how's it been hiding, why Manhatten, why did the bitten explode, did they kill it, how did a camcorder and it's tape survive a bomb blast???
I mean, this is a movie, you need to give your audience something to think about. Hell, I found Donnie Darko more explained than this.

Other than that, I did like the film. Some of the dialogue was shitty but the graphics were good and the acting decent. I'd give it 7/10.

Director has already stated it came from the bottom of the ocean, where its been for thousands of years. A company started harvesting some sort of material on the ocean floor, wich is its food source, pissing it off, making it attack the capsized tanker ship in the beginning.

As for whatever the hell fell from the sky, some people are saying its a satellite, some people are saying it was a whale.

The hand held camera approach really worked, gave the movie a very realistic feel and made it very visceral. There were also some truly tense moments, it was great.

Friggin' awesome and here's hoping that there's a sequel.

I saw Cloverfield last night and loved it. I really don't think this movie would have worked if it hadn't been shot the way it had. It made it feel more real and although the character development wasn't THAT deep, you really wanted them to escape because it made it feel somewhat like you were there with them.

Possible Spoilers below?

I think that the movie not telling you much about the creature made it more frightening. You don't know where it came from or if it died for sure at the end. That sense of wonder really adds some intensity to it.

The thing I wish they would have told us though is if Lily lived or died. I'm hoping that if they do decide to make a sequel, we at least have her in it to add some connection other than the monster.

*End Spoilers*

Overall though an amazing movie. Definitely worth the $8 I paid for it.

My theatre did not respond very well to the film. Myself, I liked it for what it was. I thought that it was well thought up and very well acted. I liked not knowing anything about it, some shit just doesn't always need to be explained. I also believe that they may take a Blair Witch approach as in there could be a sequel shot on regular cam which will go into detail about things. I guess some people were expecting somebody i na white coat to pop out and explain on video camera exactly what it is, where it came from and how you need to kill it.

Personally, i'm saying thank god they didn't take that approach.

7/10

I liked the movie a lot. I keep hearing the bullshit about the CGI being questionable. The dynamic simulations and matte paintings used in the VFX were flawless. Now the only thing you coupld possibly question was the giant monster, which is easy since it didnt exist. Where as the destruction also done in 3d and matte paintings to some extent looked flawless. Of course you can question the giant monster since the fucking thing doesnt really exist.

I made it about 3/4s of the way through the movie before my stomach started getting the same feeling I get when I read in a moving car. The movie wasn't long enough to make me puke, and it went away as soon as I stood up. That said, I was entertained throughout, despite some shortcomings and gaps in character logic.
