Welcome to day 1 of my month of movie reviews! Thats right everyday I'm going to review one horror movie. Howver as to not spam the forum, I'll keep all my reviews in this thread.
PLOT:
A mysterious killer known as 'Jigsaw' has been kidnapping people and and putting them through 'tests' via death traps. It's a cute plot, the killer who doesnt really kill his victims but traps them, leaves them with clues and surrounds them with death traps.
His motive for doing so is pretty good too, however its kind of dumb when you think about it, 'I'm going to kill you if you dont appriciate your life. So here are a bunch of death traps that will kill you unless you figure out an obscure clue thats easier to miss than a grain of salt in a bowl of rice'
Cute plot but when you apply logic to it, it doesnt remain as clever.
7/10
SCRIPT:
This is the films second biggest problem, the script. The character Adam, flatter than Gwenyth Paltrow up against a wall. He's got no real character and I didnt give a fuck about him.
Detective Dumbfuck (played by Danny Glover) is as stupid as the nickname I've given him. I don't know what kind of idiot goes into a serial killers grounds with just his friend. This is what seperates a bad screnwriter from a good screenwriter, a good screenwriter would have realized how dumb this idea is.
Dr.Gordon isnt a bad Character, but he's too much a stereotype. The successful but filandering physician? Come on thats as cliche as having the black guy die first in a horror movie.
Gordons Wife has some life to hear, but shes also a stereotype character.
And thats the problem with Saw, its characters are all pretty much stereotypes. The only thing thats really unique is the films ending and its premise.
5/10
ACTING
Cary Elwes as Lawrence Gordon is pretty much the one guy who ends up holding the entire film on his shoulders. Elwes is a really good actor, but in this film he doesnt give out his usual performance. I blame it on the James Wan.
Danny Glover gives a pretty good performance, but his character is so dogshit dumb its hard to watch Danny on the screen.
Leigh Whannel...I haven't seem this much lack of talent and prescence on the screen since Thandie Newton.
Monica Potter as Gordons Wife is actually pretty good, but as shes not really a major character in the film as she is a plot point it doesnt add much to the score.
Same with Ken leung as Det.Sing.
Shawnee Smith as Amanda isnt bad, but her one scene and flash back dont really give you much to absorb as a character.
6/10
MUSIC
Yeah, the Music in this film was pretty flat, I honestly cant remember much of it. I wanted some cpreepy gothic atmospheric music to add more tone to the atmosphere.I do remember some hammy techno here adn there though.
5/10
EDITING
What the fuck is wrong with this film? There are times its pretty well peiced together and then it shifts into a shitty MTV music video, the superfast cartoony speed in several scenes just hurts. It doesnt help that the film is slow and its pacing is pretty 'off' as well so it jumps about a bit while continuing a slow descent into mediocracy.
6/10
GORE
What little there is isnt bad, but it feels more like a PG-13 film with a few tiny bits gore that add a smidge of juice to it. There arent any real squeemish gore effects in the film, yeah we see Dr.Gordon saw into his foot some and a guys guts...um, that was pretty much the major shit right there.
6/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
I felt the film suceeded here quite well, the creepy dingy dirty look of Jigsaws traps and the lighting worked for me as well. I thougth this was the best part of the film.
8/10
DIRECTION
James Wan has some talent when it comes to visuals, but when it comes to working with actors, and intense emotion...he's pretty bland. Doesnt seem to know how to handle it or crank it up to the right level.
Saw got pretty damn Z-grade in a few bits, Especially with Adam and the fact detective dumbfuck fires like....I think almost 25 shots in the film and only manages to wing his target once. That's just really bad, almost Uwe Boll bad.
5/10
FUN FACTOR
I didnt have much fun watchign saw, it had some decent moments but it was mainly two guys getting irritated at eachother.
4/10
CHEESE
While we all know some cheese can add some life to a film,a cheezy film that takes itself seriously kind of sits on your head. too much cheese please.
So in this case the cheese scoreworks against saw.
- 7/ 10
Overall: 45 /90 = 'F'
2nd opinion: its not a terrible movie, but its no where near as good as people make it out to be. Maybe it was all the hype, but even though this was a creative film, it wasnt really a good one.
Too amateurish, not enough emotional investment in the characters, and characters doing unbelievably stupid things.

PLOT
One night all of a sudden the dead rise and attack the living. Eating their victims and making more and more ‘ghouls’. Seven people hide inside a small farm house and try to survive the night. But personalities clash and when people cant work together, things go wrong real fast.
It’s actually a pretty damn good plot. Even though this film is almost 40 years old it still hold sup quite well today. Not to mention this is THE film that made zombies what they are: flesh eating plague rats. Before night of the living dead, zombies were just henchmen that’d strangle. Here they’re their own monster.
10/10
SCRIPT
I have some issues with Romero’s script and characters, mainly that…well, they aren’t that interesting in a lot of ways. Why does Barbara go into a childlike state after just being attacked by a zombie in the graveyard? I understand the shock of losing a loved one as well as her fear of graveyards from a child, but it doesn’t quite equal a mental brake down. Though it may just be me, I noticed her ‘freaking out’ when describing the zombie attacking her to Ben eerily similar to how a rape victim would describe being attacked. So that alone is enough for me to nod deduct any points. Ben as a character, wow, this guy is all about getting things done and trying to stay one step ahead of the dead, Ben is to Zombie films what Ash is to B movies. He’s really always trying to think on his feet, he’s very tough and he tries to get the others to work with him, not against him. The fact Ben is black and not white really is unique in this film, especially when it comes from an era when Segregation just fell. I like how the film kind of is about racism, the line from Ben to Barbara ’Gonna be a lot more of them here when they find out about us’ sounds a lot like how the KKK would react to a white woman marrying a black man back then.
My only real issues with the script are Tom and Judy’s death being kind of…well stupid. It seemed kind of like a bad joke that her jacket would get caught.
I also didn’t like that we didn’t get more ‘character’ From Helen Cooper and Barbara. I felt there was more to explore with each of them that we never got. But these are minor grips on a really good script that still holds up 40 years later.
8/10
ACTING
All about Duane Jones and Karl Hardman’s tension between each other. Harry Cooper might be a closet racist, or just a control freak, we don’t know. But Harry’s need to hide and bens desire to stand his ground is one of the best parts in the film. And Jones and Hardmann pull it off really well. Judith O’Dea as Barbara is pretty convincing as a woman who has a mental breakdown.
The dead in the film are interesting because they don’t act like zombies in a lot of ways, they don’t snarl or groan or howl or drool. They’re people in a trance who just stare and wait, and to be honest that is pretty damn creepy.
8/10
MUSIC
Very nice creepy stuff. Especially when you consider that its 40 years old and as we know the music that was used in ye olden horror Is pretty bland and focused more on atmosphere(but not the right atmosphere) The simple light tunes used here to this day still ARE creepy and unsettling.
7/10
EDITING
The only real issues I had with the editing is the films pacing which is yeah, pretty slow, but it does build up in the final act so that’s always good.
The other issue I had is some of the continuity, over the course of three shots it goes from day to pitch black night, and some other minor things. But it’s the pacing that kind of gets me.
7/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
There are some shots of early ‘dutch’ angles that I think are really cool. The overall look and ton eof the film is pretty bleak and in this case while it may not be that appealing visually, it does stick with you and add atmosphere to this dark world Romero created. SO even though I would have liked some more artsyness and visual appeal, it still works.
8/10
DIRECTION
The tension between Ben and Harry feels real, the feeling that this outbreak could happen is there and this dark bleak world also feels real. Romero created something special when he made night of the living dead, the fact that it feels like it could happen. That will always win him a strong score.
9/10
FUN FACTOR
The film isn’t amazingly fun to watch, but its always interesting top watch. It’s not about action scenes, its about people trying to think, work together and overcome something really horrifying. So that compensates for some lack of entertainment here and there.
8/10
CHEESE
The cheese in this case works for the film. Zombies taking over, militia groups stepping in as law, epidemics, bit of scifi and some simple but fun gore are good for you.
7/10
Overall
72/90= a ‘B’, just because some of the aspects of the film haven’t aged that well doesn’t mean its not strong and worth watching.
But some pacing issues, some bland music here and there, and the fact I wanted to know more about some characters is the reason that this movie didn’t get a higher score. that’s just me.
..i wonder if anyone is gonna actully read these..

The music is good for the film, but it's even older than the film. Remember the budget was around 100K. George used public domain library music, that had been featured in several other low budget films before.

10-04-2007, 06:03 PM
Actually he spent I think it was 5k on some music from 'teenagers from outer space' for the movie. To be honest the music he purchased worked better in NOTLD than it did in teenagers from outer space.

It was also in a flick called Hideous Sun demon. It's a library catlog of music that's been sampled in several b movies. Including cheapo teenagers from space.
And according to wiki it's been used in Redzone cuba and The Killer shrews (aka attack of the bath-mat covered dogs) among others.

Tonights review is 'bram stokers' Dracula, by Coppola.
PLOT
Count Dracula relocates from Transylvania to England and causes terror. However Dracula is a tragic character who is misunderstood and all he wants is love, which ultimately makes this horror film a horror romance thats well...pretty stupid.
6/10
SCRIPT
Well I have to say I really dont like this movies script. Because when it uses the source material it's actually really cool. The scenes where the characters are writing in their journals, and sending letters to others, thats directly from the novel, and it adds a lot to the movie.
What pisses me off is that there's a level of high retardadion(I might say 'gamma retardation) in this movie based on the fact it's all about sex and Dracula's 'tragic love'. Dracula goes from evil geriatric to Cassanova. Now I can understand some of the changes from the novel to the film.
My sister is an avid reader and told me that in the novel the characters are all flatter than a squirrel on a highway. Dracula is just 'a stupid beast' in the novel that people kind of talk about according to her.
But having a creature of evil being a tragic figure is one of my pet peeves, unless theres a grand story behind it all, which in this case there isnt.
It's funny though, in this film there isnt much development of anyone but the Count himself. Mina Harker goes through a transformation of faithful innocent fiancee to nymphomaniac vampire jail bait, as a matter of fact all the vampires in the film are pretty big on fucking the life out of things.
That's...more unsettling than scary really. to be honest character wise there isn't much more to tell, eveyrone blends in the background.
The films anti climactic ending is lackluster and quite frankly a cop out I felt. it just stops and there isnt any resolution what so ever.
5/10
ACTING
I'm a big fan of Gary Oldman, he's a damn fine actor and is amazingly versitale...But he was really a hammy count. I just didnt buy him as this evil old codger so much as a 'devious dipshit' who had a 300 year old boner. Bela Lugosi will always be the perfect Dracula cinematic incarnation.
Keanu Reeves as Johnathan Harker, it's not a terrible performance, But Reeves wasnt right for the part.
Same with Wynona Rider as Mina Harker.
I was very dissapointed by Anthony Hopkins as van Helsing. He was kind of all over the place and too over the top for me to really
The one performance I absolutelly detested was Tom Waits as Renfeild. Utterly repulsive and obnoxious character that just makes me cringe. Not to mention a bland 'i'm crazy' performance. I loved dwight Fry's perfect portrayle of Renfeild in the 1931 film.
Sadie Frost as Lucy the tramp and nympho vampire....yeah, remember when I said this film is all about sex? bingo.
6/10
MUSIC
I felt it was pretty over dramatic, but it was very atmospheric and was pretty cool as well. I felt it was too good for this movie a few times too.
8/10
EDITING
the pacing in the film feels..well kind of off. Everytime it picks up it slows down, back to Translyvania with Johnathan Harker trying to escape, or a renfeild scene, or more sex scenes. I kind of wanted more atmosphere and emotional invetsmen tin characters, guess I was asking for too much.
6/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
Very nice, lots of wonderful artsyness thats very visually appealing to the eyes, the look and tone are really something. I just wish the rest of the film could match this.
9/10
DIRECTION
Coppola's visuals are great. His control over some of the performances is questionable, the weak ending is a rip off, and some of the casting is prettty iffy. This film is by no means aclassic or coppolas best work, but its still pretty good and its one of those movies you should at leats see once. for the visuals and atmosphere if anything.
7/10
FUN FACTOR
If you want soft core porn/horror, go for it. If you want a tale of terror that will catch your attention and give you a dark twisted tale, you'll have to look elsehwere. the film is kind of a chore to watch.
4/10
CHEESE!
well, the cheese goes against another film. A tragic figure of evil with an undead ding `dong that just wants some loving after 300 years and he finds a reincarnation of his dead girlfriend and decides to relocate to be with her.
Yeah, I call this movie 'coincidences 2: the final fucking' where stupid peopel do stupid things while fighting an evil vampire who is also dumber than a Bush family reunion.
-8/10
OVERALL
43/90= an 'F'.
I wanted to like this film and have watched it three times now, but it just didnt do anything for me. If it wasnt abotu people fucking eachother all the damn time and actually was about an truly evil vampire bastard and not a love sick pussy maybe we would have had something here.
but we dditn, adn so this is review no.3 ending.....wait for it......now.

You appear not to care for a great deal of the movies you are reviewing.
Cant love everything, if I did I'd be...well Gore. Besides thats why i'm reviewing the 'monster squad'
PLOT
Dracula is going to rule with world with an army of...himself and six other monsters. Well it's a pretty hammpy plot, but this being a film aimed more for the younger audiences I cant really bitch it out for that.Theres a lot of creativity in this film.
7/10
SCRIPT
The script really shines, the kids feel like kids, there are a lot of times when the film gets serious and dark. But theres a lot of humor in the movie thats just gold, 'Wolfmans got nards', 'groundhog day pt 12', and the naked photo of one kids sister.
My only real problem was how worthless the gillman and mummy were. The Gillman just didnt do much of anything and only got one scene to himself. He also got put down faster than 'old yeller'.
The mummy on the other hand, was THE most worthless fucking thing in the entire picture.Had no abilities to speak of and just wandered around like a decreped old man looking for pennies on the ground. It was fucking pathetic and to this day I still have issues with it.
Dracula as a villain didnt quite work here as he didnt do much and wasnt very organized. If you're going to take over the world then you at least need a plan or an army of undead idiots in tripple digits.
However a lot of suttle touches in this movie kept me from giving it any lower than a 7. Scary German guy being a holocaust survivor, the strong opening scene, and the wolfman debate.
7/10
ACTING
Tom Noonan as Frankensteins monster is fantastic, hes truly tapped into the gentle nature of the character. Not since the Karloff Lake scene from the original 1931 movie has anyone ever done this.
Duncan Regeher as Dracula, its nto a bad performance but he's more nasty than evil. Being more of a kids film I can understand this. But I wanted 'more'. I did however like that not once in this movie does Dracula blink.
The mummy, fuck it, the wolfman is nice and monsterous. Jon Gries is great as the wolfman when he's human, Leonardo Cimino as scary German guy is fantastic. He's got a very gentle demenor and has a nice touch of class.
The kids in this film, are really great. Even though some of the supporting kids characters dont do much, what they get to do is memorable and charming. As a whole they all perform quite well and are belivable.
8/10
MUSIC
Well its 80's music, so its pretty gawdy and it can get stuck in your head really easily. To the point where it can hurt. The atmospheric music thats used in the movie is really good I felt, not too overdramatic and compliments the feel of the movie. But the 80's music is gonna gouge out a few points.
6/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
This movie has a pretty nice look. When it gets dark and gothic its at it's best I felt. The gothic areas have a lush feel to them that I really found grand. I kind of wanted more of that in the film....though I will admit, to this day I still want these kids tree house.
the nice dark shadowy lighting in alot of scenes is also a plus.
8/10
EDITING
The films pacing is good, but it's a little too fast making the film feel a lot shorter than it is. thats my only real complaint in terms of editing.
7/10
DIRECTION
Dekker's direction is pretty well handled, he knows how to keep things pretty light even when they get dark, and the performances he got out of the kids was really fantastic. Though I would have liked more artysfartsyness to it.
I just wish the movie was longer and had more of a resolution to it...and th e mummy wasnt so worthless. lol
7/10
FUN FACTOR
This movie is all about fun, yes its got a lot of dark subject matter and some mild gore. But its pretty light for the most part, the climax when the army shows up is all kinds of silly.
But its that sillyness that really makes the movie more fun to watch.
9/10
CHEESE
The cheese works well with this movie. Its got charm, its fun, and the kids have a lot of fun lines. even though the mummy is worthless and the gillman isnt exactly anything special. Its all good.
9/10
68/90= 'C'
Not the strongest of movies, but it IS fun, has some clever in jokes to the horror genre, and the film is a cutl classic. I highly reccomend seeing it if you havent. its just that much fun.
And tonights review, 'john carpenters "the thing" '

A C for a film with the line "So long Band-aid Breath!"??
That is the greatest insult you could say to a mummy.
Would 'toilet paper pimp' be acompliment then?:P
the Thing
This is pretty much THE perfect horror movie gents and gentles. See it, love it, worship it.
PLOT
Upon discovering a crashed UFO an american rewsearch station in the antarctic bring a frozen mutated body into their camp. The body thaws, the thing takes over and trouble begins from there.
The same plot as the original 1950s film, but a shape shifting monster in place of a 'carrot' works. But its what the characters in the film do to try to survive this monster as well as what the monster does to survive that make this gem glisten.
8/10
SCRIPT
Some of the creepiest shit ever written and one of the most interesting takes on a monster in cinema. Least I think so.
While this movie doesnt have a whole lot of character development, what it does have is a bunch of guys trapped in a horrifying situation who have to try to out think something they don't understand, and thats where they shine.
The films climax and ending is really superb. It's not a happy ending, but its a memorable one.
9/10
ACTING
Kurt Russell's performance in this movie is really great, hell there is not one performance in this movie that can be nit picked. But Russell and Keith David stand out from the rest in terms of presence and character. both Macready and Childs have a lot of strength to them that really just makes you focus on them more than anyone else.
10/10
MUSIC
Creepy forboding atmospheric tunes will crawl under your skin and compliment this films look and feel without flaw. A feat which isnt rarely done. Its a pleasure tto come accross a movie that has a soundtrack tha tfits it like a glove.
10/10
EFFECTS
Rob Botin and Stan Winston did something so fucking amazing with this film with all the monster designs and creature effects I cannot praise them enough. Especially when these effects are almost 20 years old they hold their ground to this day, in an age of digital magic.
10/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
Fucking wonderful, this movie has a solitary feel and look to it, as well as an impending sense of doom. I love the monster shots ,the dim lighting, and the feeling of emptiness.
However at the same time, the feeling of emptiness can make you feel empty and depressed when the movie ends. I deduct one point for that as much as I love this movie, I hate how I feel when it ends. Miserable and depressed.
9/10
EDITING
While I think the pacing could have improved a little, thats aminor grief. the slow build up of suspence is soemthign every horror fan should bow down too. The solitary look and feel of this movie is balanced by the pacing.
9/10
DIRECTION
Carpenter back when he WAS horror. His direction here is SO fucking good its hard to belive he's become such a shell in the last 20 years. This is a film of legend in my opinion.
10/10
FUN FACTOR
While not the most fun to wacth as its kind of slow, thats not entirely a bad thing. it's scary. Its actually a pretty fucking intense film when you fully realize how dangerous the thing itself is. When I say it isnt fun to watch, I don't mean its boring I mean it can litterally make your skin crawl.
That can take out some of the fun when you're a 27 year old film student who doesnt get scared by anything :P
7/10
CHEESE
This film is just pure originality, being that its a remake says highly of what Carpenter and co were able to do. This isnt really a cheesy film at all to be honest. It's brutal, thought provoking and creepy.
I'm not sure how to rate it based on that. Its not cheezy in a good or bad way, it's just good. so I'll give it the full 10 points as a bonus for being such a masterpeice.
10/10
Overall, 92/100= 'A'
'Nuff said.

PLOT
Michael Myers mudrers his sister at age ten, years later he escapes from an asylum ands proceeds to start killing again.
Not the most original stalker/slasher film plot, but it has some very nice supernatural forshadowing elements.
7/10
SCRIPT
Well, there isnt too much to a lot of the characters in the movie. They're pretty simple, but they do feel like real people. Laurie a bookworm, Annie a smart ass, and Linda the free living cheeleader(slut).
Dr.Loomis does seem kind of crazy and paranoid which actually makes his character more interesting and adds to the movies ending.
I do kind of wish the films pacing wasnt too slow in some areas though. Not all tha much really occurs in the film until the last 15 minutes. Yeah it adds a lot to the suspence, but I felt more could have been done. Maybe an extra kill or two.
7/10
ACTING
Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode is really great, she does a damn fine performance. Donald Pleasence as Dr.Loomis really is the heart of the movie. P.J Soles is way too charming for the character she plays.
As before the most of actors in this film all feel like real people, and thats really a nice touch to the film.
8/10
MUSIC
The classic creepy halloween theme, it doesnt get any better than this.
10/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
While there arent too many artsy or dutch shots that I really dig, the lighting and tone of the film feels like halloween night at times, its voyeuristic shots have a nice stalker feel, and the supernaturalish shots of Michael moving around and dissapearing are good stuff.
8/10
EDITING
Well my only real gripe is that the film is a little on the slow side. for everything that it is its really great and all, but I would have liked it to pick up the pace a little.
7/10
DIRECTION
Bakc when Carpenter was on top of his game he was a damn fine director with all kinds of talent to spare and damn fine ideas. His direction of Halloween has a Hitchcockian feel to it. And thats never a bad thing.
9/10
FUN FACTOR
even though its a little slow and doesnt have real violence or any squeamish scenes, its got soem nice t and A realistic characters, nice suspence and a wodnerful climax. Its a fun film to watch.
9/10
CHEESE
The cheese does kind of work against this movie some. But that comes from this movie setting slasher standards, horny teens, dissapearing killer, escaped mental patient.
costs it some points.
6/10
Overall: 71/90= 'B'
Watch 'Halloween' on Halloween. It's got a nice nostalgic feeling for those of us who enjoy the feeling. And if you havent seen it, see it. Not the remake.

10-09-2007, 03:21 AM
the original Karloff film, dark, noirish and kind of slow, but this is the original mummy film that had a much more solid idea of what the monster is.
PLOT
A mummy is discovered by an archeologist and it turns out to be cursed priest Imhotep, who wants to ressurect his woman for whom he was mummified for thousands of years ago.
Not an original plot at all really, granted yes this is an almost 80 year old movie and it set the standard, but its still pretty...small.
7/10
SCRIPT
Well its a 1930's script and there isnt much character to be foudn here, there arent any action scene so rmajor special effects to speak of either, and how the mummy is destroyed is really pathetically hammy.
BUT, the fact the the mummy isnt a pussifed shambling zombie or in you face warlock that controlls the elements is where the interesting feature is.
This mummy is more like a ghost ina lot of ways, he's also very crerebral, and does his best to manipulate people while using little bits of sorcery from the shadows.
that alone earns the script a decent score.
7/10
ACTING
Nothing but Karloff here. Hes the only one worth paying attention to in this film as he's the only one with any real screen prescence here. the obnoxiously pretentious 1930's screen acting from the supporting cast is pretty bland. Focus on Boris people. theres a reaons he's a horror icon.
I give the acting an eight, only because of Karloff.
8/10
MUSIC
Very little music is used in this movie, back in the 30's they didnt use all that much music. I only recall a little in the begining and the ending credits. Soem atmospheric music would have been good in this film.
3/10
EDITING
Early attempts at suspence were futile, 'all your time are belong to us'...Yeah this film is almost criminally slow at times. There are LOTS of talking scenes, its the scenes with the supporting cast that are the slow and obnoxious ones.
Even thogh the film only runs at 73 minutes long, it feels longer as well, not much occurs.
4/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
It feels like you're ina museum really, well with heavy mood lighting.the film has a strong emphasis on shadows, which is kidn of cool. but ultimatelyl when no tmuch goes on its hard to say it makes much of an impact.
4/10
DIRECTING
Karl Freunds direction is artistic and has soem very night lighting and a smidge of atmosphere, but after almost 80 years its lost a lot of its luster.
6/10
FUN FACTOR
It's not that fun of a film to watch, it feels long though its short, its got a weaker than Clinton ending, and i woudl have liked to see th emumym do more.
5/10
CHEESE
The cheese is not this movies friend. the ending is a complete cop out and again, not all that much occurs story wise. It kind of parralells 1931's 'Dracula' too.
- 8/10
Overall: 33/ 90 = 'F'
It's not a terrible film, its got an interesting premise of as creature thats very under developted. Worth seeing once just to say you did.

the original, not the crapfets remake.
PLOT
An eccentric millionaire invite sguests to survive 1 night at a haunted house. If they make it they get 10K, when people start dying things dont quite work otu so well. its a cute plot I really was starting to dig it too. Unfortunatelyl the films way to short to really indulge your 'sweet tooth'
7/10
SCRIPT
While not a terrible script it does have a pretty good story. But unfortunatelyl you really dont get any real character development in th emovie, while there are some nice plot twists to wet your appetite on this little candy coated adventure, it needed a lot more to it. A lot of the characters are background fodder, but Fredric Loren has an interesting atmosphere about him, and Annabelle Loren is a nice cold bitch too.
But you're really watchign this to watch Vincent price mroe than anything.
7/10
ACTING
Vincent Price in his glory is wonderful as a smarmy millionaire, Carol Ohmart as annabelle Loren is a nice cold performance, ELisha Cook Jr as Watson prichard...yeah. He delivers a clueless performance thats all exposition. Hes th ehistorian of all the horrors of the house and whiel its kind of interesting, I would have rathered Price himself have been telling these tales.
Everyone else in the film does their part as standing in the background lookign horrifed and scared is important. but not noteworthy.
8/10
EDITING
the movies got a VERY nice even pace, but its only 75 minutes long. Really way to damn short and not enough happens in the film I felt. Its got a good plot and a nice story but it needed to have more happen.
7/10
MUSIC
For the life of me I cant really recall much in the way of music as I can sound atmosphere, like wind blowing through windows.
4/10
CINEAMTOGROPHY
Soem nice dark noi-ish shots in this movie as well as great camera angles mix up and create a very interesting, but brief litte film.
8/10
DIRECTION
William castle, the gimmick director did a really good job on this film. Nice even pacing, an atmosphere of mystery and a nice plot twist at the end. Still I would have loved to see them explore more of the mansion and have more going on as well.
8/10
FUN FACTOR
100% fun here, simple, little silly and cheesy, but fun.
10/10
CHEESE
Good cheese too, but I'm removing one point for ELisha Cook.jrs last line of the movie. it just..well watch it and you'll see.

PLOT
A man disfigured by a college science experiment goes ona killing spree, taking the lives of those he holds responsible for his disfigurement. Should have started with the screenwriter. what could have been a goofdplot ends up as...mold.
3/10
SCRIPT
Z Grade shit here folks, which is why this movie was on MST3k. There is no character development, hell there arent any characters other than the brute man and the blind pianist. there are just people who talk and give out exposition as well as remorseless acts of stupidity based on this script.
The 'resolution' in the end features THE most pathetic attempt at justifying why the killer is so bad. thank god for Mike and the bots.
2/10
ACTING
Pathetic sloppy stilted wooden performances plaugue this attempt at noir, the only performance that has any real feelign is from Rondo Hatton AKA, the brute man. He's not a bad actor and has a few nice tender scenes, but it's hard to watch him in this role.
If you see this film you'll see a man with a face like an Easter Island statue, this isnt make up. the poor guy was disfigured in real life due to expose to to mustard gas in WW1.
A movie was made around his disfigurement, and it bombed. Hatton actually died due to complications from the deasease that ruined his features.
The majority of the cast gives a performance that Shatner would be embarrased about.
2/10
MUSIC
There is nice gentle music for the tender scenes that does its best to add a 'beauty and the beast' element in th efilm. but the rest of th emusic is out of place and kind of shoddy.
4/10
EDITING
pacing pacing pacing, none of it here. This is a slow film where not much happens but exposition. Ther eis also horrible re-use of a few shots in some scenes in the movie that stands out like a gay man at a texas chili cook off.
2/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
A half decent attempt at Noir, but its so dark you cant make out whats going on ina few scnes. Not to mention that they claim the killler in the film is 'large heavy set man' when in several scenes you can tell Hatton is only about 5'7 when actors over 6 ft tall are present.
5/10
DIRECTION
Pathetic,a harmless movie, but pathetic none the less. This film was destined to be MST3k material.
2/10
FUN FACTOR
It's kind of fun, ina z-grade sense. But theres nothing to this film. It try's its hand at suspence and horror and fails miserabley.

You better bet this earns a negative ten of ten cheese wise.

Just be glad you havent seen the movie. Here's another example of a Z grade film that tires to bundle horror, drama, and comedy and fails in every way. Expect a score so negative, the overly judgemental crowd is gonna stop by and take notes.
Ok well as a fan of MST3k I've seen a lot of bad horror films that were all a lot of fun. this isnt one of them, in fact this is the worst fucking peice of shit movie I've seen. Yes 'Manos' and 'werewolf' were rotten, but this is ona level of pure incompetence,.
Cant just review good movies, got to review bad ones too.
PLOT
An ass-tronaught survives extreme radiation from Saturn and his body is turned into beef jerky, and then gravy pudding. The only way for him to not melt is to eat people and a 'crack team' is sent out to find him and stop his killing spree. if they dont nasa will send more astronaughts to Saturn. By the way this is a military secret experiment.
This isnt a plot, this is a 'what if?' conversation gone wrong.
1/10
SCRIPT
No character development, terrible dialogue, horrible concept, and to make it worse this movie was made in the 70's. The fact the movie switches gears from being blandly serious to astoundly retarded with a 'sub plot of humor' to ligthen what can only be called a depressingly malnurished tone of uninterestingness. This script is like used toilet paper, needs to be flushed and fast.
1/10
ACTING
There is not one credible performance in this movie at all. There arent any people or dramatic situations in this movie worth noting and neither are there performaces worth watching.
The lead actor is the most annoying crap I've seen since Devon Aoki, and at least shes got tits.
1/10
MUSIC
70' s music, and not the good kind. Hammy weird shit that just needs to be taken off life support. Thats right, no points what so fucking ever.
0/10
MAKE UP
The only thing worth noting is Rick baker did the make up for the film and the effects don't suck. but the film sucks so hard you dont give a fuck.
6/10
EDITING
Can something fucking happen now? Do we need to have flash backs and characters talk about whats already happened ten times over? And when something happens can it not suck? Not with this script.
0/10
DIRECTION
This director needs to suffer for this movie. I demand he suffer for this sack of shit. I want his nuts stapled to his fucking forhead.
0/10
FUN FACTOR
I've had more fun with diarrhea, the type that makes your ass feel liek its burning.

Can do, just wanted to get some really bad movies in the mix.
PLOT
Mad Scientist Henry Frankenstein creates a living man from the bodies of the dead.Things go downhill from there, the man has a derranged brain and kills people while Frankenstein is forced to confront his creation.
Good plot, unfortunatelly the film doesnt really share much with the novel it's based on.
7/10
SCRIPT
The script isnt bad, but it suffers from shortness. The film is only a little over 70 minutes and thats really damn short for a movie. There isnt too much character development to speak of unfortunatelly, but the characters in th efilm mak eup for that.
Fritz the hunchback is a nasty little man, Frankenstein is a man obsessed with creation, and the monster himself is really something special. The best scene hands down is the lake scene with the little girl.
the rest of the characters in the film are pretty much exposition and background make up.
8/10
ACTING
Dwight fry as Fritz the Hunchback set the standard for evil hunchbacked servants, Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein really does an outstanding job as a man obsessed. His line 'It's alive, it's alive!' is so fucking well said.
Boris Karloff as the Monster, No one has ever put on the monster make up before and matched his prescence and performance. The clostest ever to Karloff is Tom Noonan's in 'the monster squad'.
The film is almost 80 years old and his performance is still great.
8/10
MAKE UP
Jack Peirces Monster make up is good stuff. The flat top head is a little silly yes, but it does leave you with an interesting impression. The bizaare look of the monster will always be fondly remembered.
8/10
EDITING
A lot of talking scenes that arent bad, but in the case with lots of 30s and 40's films, not much happens in this movie. The pacing is pretty slow and I wanted to see the monster doing more than skulking.
But thats just me.
6/10
CINEMATROGROPHY
One of the first dark gothic films ever made on cinema it appears very soft a little campy now, but it has a lot of charm as well. There's enough dark and soft lighting in this film to give it a more serious look than a silly one.
7/10
DIRECTION
James Whale does an outstanding job here, unlike in 'bride of Franksenstein' this film is very serious and has is pretty dark. Granted you dont see the monster murder anyone as it usually cuts away.
8/10
FUN FACTOR
Loads of fun, yes its slow and short, but its a good time.
8/10
CHEESE
Its cheesy yes but thats not bad. I do wish th emovie was 15 minute slonger at the least though. There is much more that could have been explored about the monster. Still its a good time.

Course they're not all mainstream horror, I like diversity in the horror movies I watch. Cant just stick to the mainstream ones, the old Roger Corman films can be fun even if they're about as scary as opening a door on a bright sunny day.
You're right I havent seen the five titles you listed, I am however familair with what folks online have said about 'zombie lake'.
But heres' the thing, I don't go out of my way to watch total Z grade crap. If I see a film titled 'Zombie lake', or 'Zombie 2', or anything by Uwe Boll I generally avoid it.
I've seen a couple hundred horror movies myself, admitidely most of them not really that good, some of them I just had to watch based on curiosity. Like Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2. I dont consider them anything special or worth watching again. But thats my opinion.
I dont really watch horror movies for the gore, I'm all about story for the most part. Story and character development are my primary interests in films. Though I'ma sucker for good 'mis en scen', atmosphere and some nice splatter too.
Even a bad movie can still have a good story, Lets pace it Night of the living dead outside the horror movie circle is considared a bad movie. but its got such a good story to it and the way that its told, that I disregard that fact.

Can do will try to get to watching it later this week. Cant say I was a very big fan of the original though so we'll see.
PLOT
Dr. Henry Jekyll wants to marry his fiance, but her stodgy uptight dickweed of a dad has decided the answer is 'no'.
So Dr.Jekyll turns to experimenting with drugs and creates the T-Virus...I mean the evil chemical forumula which turns him from a handsome white man into a hairy hard drinking abusive womanizing black man. I shit you not.
The story is centered around how in each of us a great evil is waiting to be unleashed. Not a bad plot, but not enough happens in this 98 minute film.
6/10
SCRIPT
Well as said, its not a bad script but not much happens in it. it focuses entirely on character and not on any real story. Mr.Hyde has no goals other than to fuck and get drunk.
Jekyll does become somewhat addicted to his forumula and the freedom he gets to enjoy as mr.Hyde(gentlemen are epxected to always be proper and restrained)
the sympathetic charactrer in the film is actually a beautiful free spritired prostitute. But shes ultimatelly broken by Hydes abuse and psychological torture.
If things had sped up in the film and there was more resolution then I'd give it a higher school, but its only a little above average based on how fucking long it takes for anything to occur.
6/10
ACTING
Frederic March as Henrey jekyll the kind hearted but overly curious, confused and lonely man is a nice performance. its hsi Hyde performance that I didn't like, there are times when Hyde is a nasty son of a bitch, those are expected.
But there are other times, which is most of the time, that Hyde sets a lever so low Shatner wouldnt go there, peformance wise. Hammier than a dump filled with dead pigs.
Miriam Hopkins plays a saucy free spirited prostitute named Ivy who is the most sympathetic character in the film as I said before, Unlike the stodgy judgemental upper class with all their 'pants on head retarded' rules and manners, Ivy is free spirited and fun loving. She likes to go out and drink and has a good sense of humor this is taken from her after she meets Hyde.
Its a pretty good performance and manages to add some heart to the film.
7/10
MAKE UP
The Mr.Hyde Make up as well as transformation scenes are STILL amazing to watch after almost 80 years. Wally Westmore did a fantastic job with the make up. However here is my biggest gripe about the film.
When Dr.Jekyll turns into mr.Hyde, he goes from Caucasian to Negro. He looks like a black guy with simian traits(the teeth and fangs). Not to mention the black dots added around Marches nostrils to make them look wider.
Its not as bad as 'birth of a nation', but it is in no way acceptable to me. that deducts a few points.
6/10
EDITING
Another case of a slow movie where not enough really happens. Mr. Hyde driving a woman insane isnt bad, you'll find you really hate Mr.Hyde as he psychologically tortures Icy the prostitute. thats really focused more in the film than anything else.
But I felt more was needed here. Its a film that focuses more on character than story and that can very much deter your attention.
6/10
CINEMATROGROPHY
One of the early films that originated the dark dismal look that we horror fans love. the exterior of the film has a particular dark feel to it when Mr.Hyde is on the prowl for luvin.
7/10
DIRECTION
Some pretty good 'mis en scene' and good performances here and there give the film some credit. But its the weak climax, fact that little happens in the film, and hammy Hyde performance that just makes me deduct soem points.
6/10
FUN FACTOR
It's not that fun of afilm to watch its slow, not enough happens, you really will hate Mr.Hyde for being a disgusting creature and the movies climax seems a little too...well brief. Doesnt really have any resoultion
5/10
CHEESE!
Oh yes, there will be cheese. not entirely the bad type either, but the Hyde performance, and lack of anythign goign on for 1/3 rd of the movie thathurt.
2/10
OVERALL
51/90 = 'D'
This film hasnt aged all that well really. Not really worth watching I'd say, unless you're a sucker for 'ye olden horror'.
I won't lie, it took me two tries to get through this movie.
Its not a bad morality tale, but there wasnt enough story for a 98 minute run time.

I have to disagree with that. It has some flaws: clunky dialogue and the actings not great. It's also a critically acclaimed movie (and I don't mean the cabal of internet B-movie reviewers.), it's stood the test of time and still has a following. Horror genre or otherwise it's accepted as a modern classic.

PLOT
Larry Talbot returns to Wales, his familys home to reconcile with his father, gets romantically interested with alocal girl and is buitten by a wolf while trying to save the girls friend.
Larry is now damned to become the wolf man on the full moon.
Good plot this established the modern werewolf mythos we all enjoy.
8/10
SCRIPT
Being an early horror film theres more emphasis on the plot than story or character development. That hurts the film a lot while it retains an element of mystery to it which I find cool, I cant give it too much credit as its a very, very short film. There was a lot more that could have been done and explored but wasnt.
Not to mention the biggest question of all...why are there so many gypsies in Whales? I could underastand if this was maybe more eastern Europe not but in Whales.
The biggest flaw in the film I find really, is that it has no fucking resolution at all. Now thats a common flaw in horror films way back when. after the climax there would be maybe a one minute scene that had one line that 'wrapped up' the film.
It has a lot of really good elements to it though, Larry being ostracized in church and in town, his relationship with his father, and mythos creation as well. Its just a script that needed 'more'.
6/10
ACTING
Lon Chaney as Larry Talbot would always be his legacy as an actor. Larry is very much an outcast and awkward man who doesnt seem to fit in, Larry is also a very kind man. Thus the good and evil complex is once again explored in a horror movie, the wolfman is suppossed to be everything evil about Larry.
Claude Rains as Sir John Talbot Larrys domineering father is a man tyring to keep his familys honor and legacy continuing in Whales.
Once again the rest of the casut is part of th ebackground they blend in and or are just there for exposition. This film also is notorious for wasting Bela Lugosi, he's only in the film for about 3 minutes and thats it. Lugosi is an outtsanding actor and I really felt he was robbed here.
7/10
EFFECTS
Jack Peirces make up strikes again here, while the wolfman itself hasnt quite aged as well as frankensteins monster, its not a bad make up job.
The final trasnformation scene however doesnt quite 'blend' in a swell make up wise as the first one does. Granted the first transformation is a much more suttle one, even so the final trasnformation from wolfman to human is a little 'bleh'. the Mr.Hyde to dr.jekyll transformation a decade earlier was much better crafted I felt.
7/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
I really dug the look of this film, especially the crypt scene. The lighting alone there was beautiful enough for 5/10.
I also very much liked how dark, dismal, and foggy the film got when the Wolfman was on the prowl. This gave the movie a much more supernatural tone to it than any other werewolf film.
8/10
EDITING
Well at 70 minutes total this isnt a veyr long film, it also doesnt have as much happen in it. There are 4 kills in the movie and then a lot of exposition in it. The kills dont make the film though, the wolfman on the prowl supernatural element do.
But the wolfman doesnt appear until halfway into the film and hes only got a few scenes really. i wanted more suspence and atmosphere.
Also I LOVE how when Larry talbot is transforming he's wearing a white wifebeater and then when hes the Wolfman hes wearing a black coat. And when he changes back into a human hes wearing the wifebeater and lighter attire every time.
Not the best continuity or pacing.
6/10
DIRECTION
The film is pretty well crafted for all its short comings. I give the director a lot of credit for created this dark and dysmal world engulfed by fog at night. Still more character, suspence, and well, more things going on in the film would have made it MUCH better.
8/10
FUN FACTOR
It's a fun little movie, yes its slow and doesnt have as much going on as it should, but its got some atmosphere to it and the birth of a new movie monster(eat it werewolf of london fans). Still it's too short for me to give it too much praise.

Overall
63/90= 'C'
Its a good film to watch if you have 70 minutes to kill, but its way too short, has NO resolution and yes it has people doing stupid things.
Dad going on a stroll at night surrounded by traps, and men with guns and itchy trigger fingers eveywhere.
The love interest doing the same expect being warned ahead of time that the wolfman is out to kill her.
Detetcive dickhead basically saying 'Oh..he killed him because it was dark and he though he was a wolf'.... you said this at the begining of the movie too dickhead. thats just ...lazy screenwriting.
WOuld have been MUCH stronger if everyone there saw the Wolfman being clubbed adn THEN turning back into Larry Talbot and then saying that.
But comign accross the same type of death twice after it happens and then making the assumption?...yeah, bad juju.

PLOT
A bunch of dancers survive a plane crash only to be stalked by a'monster' on a desserted Isle. Fuckign german screenwriters, what were they thinking!? There are so many better ways to exploit scantilly clad women than this!
Yeah the movie is to have scantilly clad German actresses (its a poor dub for the US) stalked by a monster thats well...lamer than anything you've ever seen.
3/10
SCRIPT
Theres not script, anyone who says there's a script is lying. Any site that lists a screenwriter has been lied too.

ACTING
Acting, yeah right. The actresses in the film put out performances that porn stars would blush at. Not to mention the dubbers of the actresses are just as rotten.
I think two of the actresses in the film give decent performances in terms of reacting to the 'monster'. but thats it.
This is just a 'film most rotten'. if it werent for the skin factor and the fact its almost an easy film to watch it'd be as bad as 'the incredible melting man'
1/10
EDITING
This film has nothing happen but women in shredded up and revealing clothes, not bad, but the way shits filmed and the pacing or lack there of is just...weird.
Seriously its fucking bizaare.
0/10
MAKE UP
Yeah right, the monste rmake up is interesting in a cheezy way, but its not scarey and is quite frankley congressionally retarded.I wish there was a rubber foam suit monster, least that'd be funnier to watch.
2/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
The films tone is....so poorly shot and filmed its hard to make up your mind as to what the fuck they were going for. It's like...My god, it fucking IS an Uwe Boll Film now that I think about it.

There isnt any direction, just some guy yelling at the actressess of camera to be mad with eachother and wear less clothing. And yelling at the prop guy for building such a goofy spider monster.

FUN FACTOR
It's harmless and pretty easy to watch, but not much happens, its got a dumber than a bag of hammers monster, 2 brief fight sequences that dont match up at all on camera and are worse than old 'batman" tv series.

Halloween aint over yet, Michael Myers is still alive and going on a killing spree. He tracks Laurie down to the hospital the cops have taken her too. The night of terror isn't over yet...Yeah what is a so-so plot is a bad script which ends up a bad movie.
5/10
SCRIPT
Ok, so why is Mychael Myers not using his knife or pulling off any juicy kills in this crap fest? Seriously, he drains a bitch of all her blood and synringes a nurse in the head.
What the fuck is going on here? This isnt the killing machine that got things taken care of fast, this is congressionally retarded.
There isnt any real character development in this film, and everyone in it is a tard too. Cautious and paranoid Dr.loomis is now professor plot point, Laurie is doped up and out of most of the film, pretty much every character in the movie is fodder.
I won't even go into Carpenters attempted 'samhain'' explination..thingy..which is above and beyond dumb.
Bad, BAD script and sequel to a pretty good suspence film.
4/10
ACTING
Pleasence isnt bad even though loomis is a clitz in this film, Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode isnt bad, but she gets to do nothing in this movie. Ok she gets to fire 2 shots into Myers and thats it.
Everyone else isnt worht mentioning as they're just walking around with signs on their backs that say 'insert knife here'.
6/10
EDITING
Slow film with nothing going on, no major story and lame kills. it does have one of the best 'cheap thrills' when Myers kills his first victim in this movie.
With a larger cast of fodder and what not you'd expect more character and things going on. That was asking for too much apparently.
6/10
MUSIC
Diarrea in a synthosizer. It has none of the atmosphere or impact it did when Carpenter did the music in the firts film.
1/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
Pale imitation of the first film, doesn't have any of the same atmosphere or tone, this feels more like high school at the hospital.

PLOT
If you watch a cursed tape, you die one week later. A reporter looks into this urband legend only to find out its true and now its after her, and her son. She sonly got one week to unravel a mystery of murder and horror before the ghost gets her and her son.
Charming plot, I really dug it. Very original and has has that japanese horror flavor I just really cant resist.
7/10
SCRIPT
Where th emovie falls apart. this is a script of convineince to me. Yes I know the japanese love having tension and nothign happen until the last 15 minutes of amovie, but 75 minutes of nothing but little clues, no action, lam eflash backs and one of THE most dismal plot points ever just really make sme mad.
All of a sudden 65 minutes into the film we find out Reiko's ex husband is Psychic and uses that ability to get the truth out of a retired scientist who abused the ghost girl of doom when she was alive.
What the fuck kind of screenwriting uis that? We shoudl have known this sooner, Fuck, the character himself should have been using this ability all fucking along to figure things out. The bastards son is gonna die in a week and he waits until day six to reveal this ability. Really weak. This should have been introduced in act one.
Also the character of Reiko the Reporter, the most obnoxious heroine I've seen since....ever. There isnt any realy character development here either.
In the final act when she adn her husband are trying to dig up Satoko's body she's bitching and whinign "I cant, its too hard! I cant', SHUT UP!!!!!!!
Jesus CHRIST how fucking annoying!WHAT!? This goes on for FIVE MINUTES STRAIGHT!?

Your bastard son's got 15 minutes to die and you cant step up to plate and just keep digging up that goddamn mud!? DIE ALREADY!

PLOT
A stupid scientist decides to steal the t-virus so he can make a mint of it, what better way to cover up theft than releasing a biological weapon in the same research lab that you're TRYING TO GET OUT OF.
SO the evil umbrella corportations ends in an 'elite' squad of fodder to find out what happened and they come accross a clueless woman in a red dress with bee sting titties and another man who's skulking around the mansion trying to find his sister.
When the video game series finally explained what happened to the Arklay mansion facility there was good explination as to how this mess happned in the first place.
A retard who wants some extra income releasing a virus just one room behind himself and expecting to escape and sell this on e-bay is about a slogical as making Hitler an orderly at a jewish Hospital.
3/10
SCRIPT
This is a TERRIBLE script. I gave 'the incredible melting man'a lot of shit, but at least the screenwriters came up with something on their own. This movie, has no originality at all.
'Written' by Paul W.S Anderson, instead of takign Ques from the popular video game series, he opts to tell the saga of Resident evil as only he can. Via Plagurism from better films.
The character 'Alice' and her 'amnesia' story arc, is ripped off from Renny Harlins 'the long kiss goodnight'.
ALice is also yet another 'Ripley' rip off.
The character 'Rain' is stolen and is actually 'Vasquez from James Cameron's 'Aliens'.
The 'lazer trap' death in which a man is sliced up into peices? Stolen from 'Cube'
The evil computer that wants to kill people? Stolen from 'Space odessy 2001'
The scene with the weiner who's gonna kill himself but at the last minute opts to pluga zombie and escape? Stolen from Romero's 'Dawn of the dead'
The rest of the characters from the movie are all nothing. They're just there to die. The fight scenes in the movie are nothing but direct to video matrix battles.
What pissed me off imesnssly though, is that in the first 30 seconds of this 'movie' the big plot point from the first game is given away. The Umbrella corporation is evil. There's no element of mystery about why all this is happening like in the game, you're just flat out told, 'Umbrella= bad'.
The mystery factor of the games was one of the best elements, what kind of a fucktard wastes a good plot point? The guy who ruined Aliens vs Predator obviously.
1/10
ACTING
Milla Jovovich is piss poor T and A, and a rotten actress to boot, so why the fuck is this rancid cunt the lead character of this shitfest? Oh wait, she' fucked the director a few times. never mind.
Michelle 'Butch' Rodriguez 'performance' as an obviously closet gay wimp of a dominatrix who's always angry and doesnt do anything but bitch and drain the film of any interest.
Were there any othe ractors/ I just remember peopel on the screen for about 5 minutes before dying some of THE most pathetic PG-13 deaths in an 'R' rated movie ever.
There's so much emphasis on Jovovich and Rodriguez for no reason whatsoever. Neither are good actresses or T and A.
Colin Salmon who is a fine actor is once again denied being able to do anything on camera.
3/10
EDITING
...BOOOOOOOOOORING. When something does happen it's too short, and then the rest of the film is exposition, or stupid scenes of characters talking about themselves. Considarign there's nothing to talk about you see why this is boring shit. Did I mention the fact there's no fucking gore at all in this film?
3/10
MUSIC
..Can someone turn this shit down? Marylin Mason sucks. Where's all the gothic orchastarted music that created the perfect atmosphere of dread in the games? Why is there this loudpretentious bullshit playing almost non stop? Fuckign weak.

PLOT
A mother at her wits end takes her sick adopted daughter to 'Silent Hill' as the child has a habit of sleep walking and screaming 'silent hill' in her sleep. So naturally she decides to not tell her husband shes sneaking off to get help for their daughter and manages to kill herself and her daughter on the way. They end up in Silent hill and encoutner many MANY pretentious boring scenes.
Yes this does take some of the games story, but the games story made sense, it was creepy and atmospheric and yes it was slow, but it had so many little things going on there was enough there to enjoy.
This has repetative deus ex machina.
2/10
SCRIPT
Despite somehow managing to win an Oscar for co-writing 'pulp fiction' over a decade ago, Roger Avery has managed to prove himself every bit as worthless a screenwriter as Paul W.S Anderson.
He's turned Silent hill into 'hellraiser' meets 'the crucible'. The story of the film is a mother trying to save her daughter from this evil town and the monsters in it.
But the movie makes more sense if you look at it a closet gay mother running off with the local lesbian bike cop to start a new life in Silent Hill only to be persecuted by the religious fanatics, and sputing off some of the worst most pretentious dialogue ever written.
Lines like 'a mother is god in the eyes of a child' will rattle around your skull and make you grimace at how bush fucking stupid those words sound when you put them into a sentence.
There is no character development, no action scenes to speak of, no one to care about and people doing stupid, stupid things for two hours.
What makes things worse is that about 30 seconds after an evil monster shows up and things get questionable, deus ex machina kicks in. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Rogery Avary, I want to take your oscar, incinerate it, and piss on the ashes...and I want my $9.25 back you hack.

ACTING
Radha Mitchel, after your terrible performance as a child endagering darwin award winner I dont ever want to see you in a movie again. The fact that the first 45 minutes of the film have you repeating nothing but 'SHARON!' every other minute is just really over the top obnoxious.
Laurie Holden as officer Cybill C. Fodder, who's job it is to be an empty headed martyr adds nothing to the film over than a reason not to watch it.
Sean Bean as the unlucky husband of a darwin award winner doesnt do a bad performance, but he doesnt get to do anything in the film.
Neither does anyone else in this 'buzz killer'.I wotn get started by how annoying stupid little girl/evil princess is.

Well...it looks like Silent Hill, and it has some artysness too it. but you know, I dont care. More time was spent on trying to make it look like Silent Hill from the game than anything else.
6/10
DIRECTION
Yawn, yes it's pretty visually in some areas, but mainly its about as interesting as watching a nail rust. The 'monsters' are al laughable and only present for maybe a few moments and thats it. The insane puritan towns people are above and beyond levels of congressional retardation spoofed on 'family guy' and 'the daily show'.
Gans control over this film and the world inspired by a unique game is very poor and hes more focused on getting the look of silent hill rather than the depth, suspence and weirdness of it.

Marion Crane steals 40k from work and plans on starting a new life with her boyfriend. On the way she stops off at the Bates motel and meets a shy young man, Norman Bates. After having a change of heart and planning on returning the money Normans mother knifes her to death.
Soon after people start looking for Marion and the money and unveil much more than they ever could have imagined. This is an unconventional movie, but its so unique in how its told.
10/10
SCRIPT
Quite good. There is a lot of little things going on in this movie, all the characters have their own little character arcs that all add to the plot. Meaning something is ALWAYS going on, even when its just implied.
Normans awkwardness and dedication to his mother start off admirable, but become more and more unatural.
Marions guilty conscience, and decision to do the right thing just before she reaches her goal.
The characters in the movie actually do feel like real people for the most part. for a film thats almost 50 years old thats a major accomplishment. Seriously, if you watch older movies you've got actors pretending to be characters rather than people.
This film was very much ahead of its time.
I just would have liked a little more resolution.
9/10
ACTING
Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, its a really great performance. You can see how fragile a character he is. His performance as a 'little lamb' of a man is really something special to see.
Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, our confused and desperate heroine is very sympathetic and beleivable. She's a somewhat desperate character who really just wants to get married.
Everyone in the film does a fine perfromance, though I did find the psychiatrist's performance at the end of the movie kind of hammy as he was wrapping up the exposition
9/10
EDITING
Little slow in a few areas, but that draws you in deeper to this world and its twisted consequences. I kind of would have liked things to pick up a little bit towards the climax, but thats a personal preference.
There is some good solid suspence here.
9/10

CINEMATOGROPHY
FUCK-ING-GENIUS.This film has so much mis-en-scen to interpret and enjoy its almost unfathomable. Hitchcock managed to pull an Orson Wells here. The choice to have this film be in black and white instead of color is so intelligent I cant give Hitchcock enough praise for making the choice.
The dark Noi-ish feel and atmosphere supported by Herrmans score is true cinematic bliss.

Good cheese, this is the film that created the evil split personality man plot popint.
'Mother' is also the original slasher villain, and how can we forget the birth of the shower scene kill?
Some of these elements are cheezy to us now after all these years, but they work So well here as this was the film to establish them.

PLOT
A playful playgirl(as in wealthy socialite) follows a lawyer to his familys home in Bodega bay to leave some lovebirds for him as a jest. For no reason the birds in the area start attacking people and killing them, soon the entire town is engulfed by them and the playgirl, lawyer and his mother and sister try to survive
Unique villains and a pretty interesting plot.
8/10
SCRIPT
I'm not going to lie, I had a lot of trouble with this films script. I absolutelly hate how there is no resolution whatsoever in this movie. They get in the car and drive off into the sunset and the movie just..ends.
Also it seems kind of...well stupid that a playful playgirl would go through all the effort in act 1 just to tease a lawyer ona whim.
I had some issues with the laywers mother as a character, she seems about as stable as an icecube on an oven. She was a pretty unlikable character up until the last like 5 minutes of the film when she snaps out of her 'bitch coma'. She pretty much just seemed there to make The playgirl squirm and be a grievence to her children.
I wont get into how obnoxious the mother in the diner was..ok I will, a total fucking dingbat. When the birds start rampaging and she flips out at the playgirl....I couldnt beleive how retarded that was. "who are you!? What are you!?'
I wanted to slap that bitch.
This is a very slow and kind of uneven script. I really wanted th ebirds to attack a good half an hour or so soone rthan thye did. There was so much more that could have been done with this premise that never was.
It's nto a terribel script, but it needed to get off its as and explroe more of the situation.
7/10
ACTING
Tippi Hedrin...I havent seen someone so adborable on the screen before who can act. I really liked her screen prescence and her performance as the unlucky heroine of this tale.
Rod taylor as the unlucky lawyer isnt as resourceful as Ben from 'Night of the living dead' but he's a good substitute.
A young Veronica Cartwright who's best known for getting Yaphet Kotto killed in 'Alien' for just standing there like a dumb ass so he couldnt torch the bug plays the sister of the umnlucky lawyer. Once again we have a snivelling child character ina horro rmovie. I dont like those characters. they're the ones I want to see die fast.
I liked Susan Plechette as Mary the teacher, shes a kind of a sad character, but filled with charm. Cant say I enjoyed her dying in the film.
8/10
EFFECTS
Well its an older film, so when i see everyone running in front of a blue screen and being swamred with animated birds...I'm not all that convinced. I can take the animated birds alone(like the fireplace sequence) but the blue screen combination didnt work for me.
Not all the effects have aged that well, but they're passable for the most part.
6/10
EDITING
Slow, really slow for my taste. Nothing happens untl the last 45 minutes of the film.
Yes I know the film paces itself, but it needed to pick up the pace at least 15 minutes sooner than it did.
also there is very little music here, Music would have really strengthened the film. I wanted some Bernard Herrmans bizaare and unsettling scores to listen to while the birds strike again and again.
5/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
It has a very nice and calm look to it, even when havoc is occuring. I saw where 'night of the living dead' got its inspiration as well as some of the Resident Evil games.
8/10
DIRECTION
Hitchcock does a fine job with an above average script, but I wanted more ouut of this film. the lack of a real ending just hurts this movie so much.
8/10
FUNFACTOR
Its...fun, but its not fun'. Id it wasnt as slow as it was it would have been stronger entertainment wise.
6/10
CHEESE!
People pecked to death by birds is pretty cheesy, but after seeing how it could happen via hitchcocks vision, I buy it. Though some of th eperfromances are off setting and the pacing can hurt some. I still give the film some good cheez points.

PLOT
An idiot opens a portal to hell inviting the cenobites to torture him to pieces. Unfortunately he suffers from buyers remorse and wants back in the world of the living. So he has his brothers wife kill for him so he can drain the bodies of blood to return to his mortal form. Only his niece finds out what’s going on and stands in his way.
Well, its not a bad plot, but its not much of a movie I felt. There was no high concept here, it’s really about sex and gore.
6/10
SCRIPT
No real character development, again its about sex and Clive Barkers love of bondage and sadomasochism. I didn’t buy it at all that one night Frank the stupid brother would show up to meet his brothers fiancé, and she’d go along let what starts out as pre determined rape end up a consensual sex. I found Julia a very stupid character with no real motive other than wanting a good hard fuck. That’s a really weak motive to have her kill for Frank and love him more than her own husband.
The only character you’ll end up liking is Kirsten franks Niece. Yes the cenobites are an interesting creation and interpretation of demons. But again it comes down to Barkers fetishes.
5/10
ACTING
It’s all about Ashley Lawrence, she’s a damn fine actress who gives a believable performance. Yes she’s cuter than all your Christina Ricci’s.
Doug Bradley as Pinhead does make history here. He’s very intense character even though he’s only in the film for about 10 minutes. I can see why Pinhead’s a horror icon.
Everyone else in the film is just there to fuck each other and look menacing. Well minus, Larry Kirsten’s father who’s…kind of just got ‘fodder’ written on his forehead.
7/10
EDITING
Not much happens other than the sex flash backs, Franks killing spree, Larry being oblivious, Julia being…well stupid, and Kirsten going on with her life until the beginning of act 3 when she gets dragged into this bloody mess. It’s a pretty slow film that does establish some decent suspense, nice gore, mood and weirdness. But it’s pretty stale I found.
6/10
EFFECTS
Some really nice gore effects here. I was very impressed by this 20 year old films use of animatronics and make up. There’s a lot of fine detail used in the movie’s make up that alone is worth watching.
8/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
An interesting look to things when the box is opened. I did however find the over all look of the film pretty bland, if it wasn’t for the noir-ish lighting scheme used in the attic to add some flavor I’d give it a low score. But it manages a unique take of things.
7/10
DIRECTION
Barker doesn’t do a bad job as a writer director, but I’m already aware that he’s really just bringing to life an extreme pain fetishists dreams and mixing up a tale of sex and murder with monsters. I liked that he could make some good tension here and there and his eye for fine detail on the make up and some nice shots. But it’s still a very small story of sex, murder, domination, sadomasochism, betrayal and ultimately a tragedy for the daughter of the story. It’s in no way as epic as people have been making it up to be.
6/10
FUNFACTOR
It’s not a very fun film to watch. Slow, over emphasis on a dumb relationship of a dumb fuck, a stupid wife and dumb husband who’s too focused on….whatever he does to notice anything’s wrong at home.
4/10
CHEESE!
Not too much cheese here, minus the final act when frank as assumed Larry’s skin and tries to pull off ‘it’s ok, I’m really your father’ ploy.

get over my difference in opinion Skybick.
Knight does make a good point here, but I seriously just didnt see any real story in Hellraiser. I felt there was too much empasis on Frank and Julia's scheme rather than focusing on the mystery of the box and the Cenobites.
I wanted to know more about those aspects rather than just see Frank sucking bodies dry and being a prick. It just felt really lopsided to me.
Well here's another review. I tried to post this last night as well but with my computer being a bitch..ugh. wont get started.
PLOT
Ok…Umbrella opens up a door that says ‘do not enter’ and lets out the lickers from the lab from the first movie and over the course of…Like 6 hours the cities fucked. It’s only up to Alice from the first film to save...You know I cant finish that sentence.
How fucking stupid can you get? You’re an evil organization and you open up the lab without any real military support incase the monsters want to go walkies? What kind of a dumbfuck screenwriter are we dealing with here? Oh that’s right, my nemesis Paul W.S Anderson.
3/10
SCRIPT
Alice is back and is even less interesting than the first film, now she’s neo from ‘the matrix’ with a poor rack, no fashion sense and an urge for extreme sports.
Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera, and Nicholai are the first of a few characters from the games to be bastardized and turned into background characters that have no reason to be in the film other than recognition from the fans.
I don’t recall Jill being an unpleasant dumbass that cant do anything on her own with out being saved though.
Nor Do I remember Nicholai being a good guy, much less piss poor comic relief that has about 2 minutes of screen time. He’ has no point in this film at all. None of the characters do, they’re their to die or be comic relief…sometimes both.
And finally the most tenacious monster in the game history, the nemesis. The rocket launcher weilding tentacle lashing mother fucking giant that just really a managed to piss you off repeatedly in the third game, as been turned into a giant cumbersome mutilated pussy. Its bad enough to make him a ‘good guy really’, but the fact that Anderson has him a remote controlled monster is somewhere in the depths of stupidity our current president hasn’t manage to reach yet.
1/10
ACTING
There are only 2 performances worth enjoying, Oded fehr as Carlos Olivera, who managed to put some charm into nothing character, and Mike Epps who manages to charm his way though the films the comic relief. He manages to make some really lame ass jokes funny and I give him credit for that.
Milla Jovovich returns looking even more confused and anorexic than she did in the first film…come to think of it all the supporting cast looks really confused and bewildered as to why they’re in the movie.
I will say this though, There is one of THE most vile and unfathomable performances given in this movie. And that’s Sienna Guillroy as Jill Valentine, who she plays as a high school prom queen on PMS. Thoroughly unlikable and unpleasant character to watch on the screen.
4/10
EFFECTS
Once again, no real gore, mediocre CGI, and finally the Nemesis monster itself. Bad…REALLY bad. The head most looks like rubber, you can see the platform shoes the stunt mans wearing. And the monsters body is totally out of proportion.
Stubby arms, small hands, an oversized head and the Sylvester Stallone platform shoes make for a really unconvincing performance.
2/10
CINEMATROGROPHY
This entire film was shot under a blue filter, everything looks the same, there’s no real variety in shots and crappy slow-mo shakey cam shots are to be found in the ‘action sequences’.
3/10
EDITING
Piss poor shit. The pathetic ‘mortal Kombat’ fight around the end of the film has got to be one of the most poorly pieced sequences I’ve ever seen. And I watch MST3k. The film doesn’t even pretend to have a story it just wants to have almost non stop half assed action sequences.
4/10
DIRECTION
Alexander Witt who was the first unit director of the first RE ‘Movie’, manages to piss it down his pants. There’s nothing to enjoy here, anyone who watches it for Milla Jovovich’s contract nude scenes really needs a hobby.
3/10
FUNFACTOR
You’d think this would be fun, but with no story, no character, no point, it’s like watching a the ’Numa Numa’ video: you’ll watch it once to see what the fuss is about, and then feel cheated.
1/10

PLOT
A machine is sent from the future to murder the mother of the man who will save humanity and defeat the machines. A soldier from the future is sent to protect her from the terminator.
Good plot, an interesting take on making a machine a monster.
8/10
SCRIPT
I really liked the script, the terminator is a real monster in this movie. Especially when its revealed what it really looks like, its definitely a scary bastard.
I liked the characters in the film, Kyle Reese is an interesting character and I quite enjoy watching how he fights the terminator in the film.
He doesn’t just sit there and shoot at it, he’s constantly trying different ways to combat it as well as slow it down. Definitely one of the best hero’s in cinema, in my opinion.
I really dug Sarah Conner’s change in the film, she starts off as a ‘load’ but in the end of the film she’s changed into a fighter.
The terminator itself is a pretty wicked monster, from point blank assassinations, to the assault on the police precinct, to imitating Sarah’s parents on the phone, its definitely one of the most creative villains out there.
My only real gripe is that the first half of act 3 is actually kind of boring. I didn’t mind Kyle and Sarah both bonding with each other and what not, but some of it just dragged on a smidge. After a good 50 minutes or so of mystery, action, exposition and carnage…it kind of slows down a little too much for my tastes.
But that’s just me, doesn’t make the film any less great.
8/10
ACTING
Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner is great casting. Sarah is a very vulnerable character and her performance highlights this.
I really liked Michael Beihn as Kyle Reese, not sure I can praise his performance anymore than anyone else has so I’ll just leave it at this.
Arnold Schwarzenegger as we all know, became an icon after playing the terminator.
Paul Winfeild and Lance Hensricksen are great as the cops who just want to find out why someone has killed two of the three Sarah Conners in the area.
8/10
EFFECTS
From animatronics, to puppetry to stop motion, Stan Winston makes you believe that this is a nasty metal mother fucker that could kill you. Though some of the effects have become a little out dated and don’t blend in that well( the animatronic Arnold bust) it still manages to be quite effective after all these years.
8/10
CINEMATROGROPHY
I really love the cyberpunk/Noir look this movie has. The fact that the majority of the film takes place around night time adds a wonderful look to the movie.
8/10
EDITING
Pretty good pacing for the first 60% of the film, but as I said before, I don’t like how slow the first half of act 3 is. It really kills the pacing and kind of drags the movie to a halt.
7/10
DIRECTION
James Cameron made a really damn fine film here and as a result he’s gone on to become one of the greatest directors ever. Though I still to this day don’t care for ‘Titanic‘.
He’s still an amazing director.
9/10
FUNFACTOR
This film is pretty intense and fast paced, its actually really suspenseful in the second half of last act. It’s not an incredibly fun film to watch, but its got lots to enjoy visually, so it gets a good score for that.
7/10
CHEESE!
The film does have its cheesiness, The romantic segments between Kyle and Sarah upon reflection are…pretty cheesy. Not ‘soap opera bad’, but the line ‘ in the few short hours we spent together we loved a lifetimes worth’ always gets on my nerves.
Still its not enough to tarnish the cheese score.
7/10
OVERALL
70/90= ‘B’
Damn fine film to watch, but I’ve watched to too many times in my life so its lost a lot of its ‘power’. Else it’d have gotten a ‘75/90’. But that’s my fault and that doesn’t take away from the movie at all.
I also didn’t bother to score brad Fidel’s score here because well, you cant rate perfection. You simply accept it with a grin.
See it, love it.

Kitstie is in an asylum following the events of the first film and the cops want to know whast happened. She sunfortunatelly in the one asylum where the guy in charge is into the evil puzzle boxes, Julia helps him out and they bring out hell itself.
Kirstie is up for scourign hell to free her father from it..adn there salso this other girl who...really doesnt add much to the film.
Yeah...this plot didnt really go anywhere. Ther ewas a lot they tried to cover but didnt really suceed I felt.
4/10
SCRIPT
There isnt any character development to be found in this film, and i'm also sorry to say its even more boring than the first. While the first in my opinion wasnt all that great, it did have some nice suspence, intetresting monsters, and great gore and good FX.
Yeah theres some splatter here and soem nice effects too, but there isnt a solid story, and its also plauged by people doing really stupid things. We're talking congressionally stupid things here. The evil puzzle box gets turned into a...well its kind of crystal shaped... and Kirstie and the other girl lose it and dont even think to try to get it while in hell.
We've got Kirsties possible sequel love interest who manages to get killed 30 minutes into the film because he doesnt stop to think the strange lady who pops up behind him when investing the murder room might be evil.
Evil doctor man is dumb enough to enter hell expecting to..you know I dont know what he was expecting I just know hes stupid.
And Frank who get sa nice 3 minute cameo in this film is just there to get squishied by Julia.
There are so many unanswered Q's in the film story though.
Who is Leviathan? Satan? One of Satans college friends?
if Julia is serving him then why does he allow her to get skinend and sucked away? If shes there to help him shouldnt she have some kind of divine protection?
Who is Tiffany? Shes never really explained as a character shes just there to solve puzzle boxes.
Why is the doctor so obsessed with all the hell boxes? yes he says he's facinated by the mind and all, but thats about it.
How come all the cenobites fromt he first film are all pussies here? WHy is the Channard cenobite stonger than they are? Why do they die and return to human form? if you die in hell...what happens to you?
These may sound like nit picky Q's but I actually am serious and curious.
4/10
ACTING
You get some nice performances from Ashley lawrence, Doug Bradley and Clare Higgins, but that beign said...there isnt much for anyone else in the film to do. The actres who does Tiffany doesnt have anything to do but look clueless and solve puzzles, evil doctor man I dditn buy as soemone facinated by hell or the evil puzzle boxes. he came accross mroe as a collector of bizaare antiquities.
6/10
EFFECTS
They vary...when Dr.Channard becomes some kind of Cenobite, the stop motion effects they use are really bad and dont blend in.
The pinhead origin scene is nice and all, but thats about it. There are a lot of forgetable effects used in this film, being my second time watching it I thought I'd remember more.
The channard death scene is...well...deus ex machina silly.
6/10
CINEMATROGROPHY
Hell sure doesnt look scarey, in fact it doesnt really stand out.it just looks like your basic odd looking labyrinth, it actually contradicts somewhat the look of the cenobites in the film.
After how bondage and hook happy they were in the film you'd expect hell to be one giant rack with people chained and hooked onto and just countless bodies forming walls and pathes and stuff.
5/10
EDITING
Its more of a movie about characters wandering around weird and somewhat grotesque scenes.not much happens and what does happen isnt enough to grasp my attention. I wanted to see the cenobites actually combat the Channard cenobite, instead they all got put down faster than old yeller.
4/10
DIRECTION
Tony Randals directorial debut here isnt much, he doesnt manage to create any of the tension Barker did in the original, and his framing and the look of the film is pretty bland.
4/10
FUNFACTOR
This is a slow and boring film where nothing is really explained and not much happens but walking around hell.
3/10

PLOT
Michael escapes the dynamite blast of the mine and hits a coma that lasta year before returning to kill more peopel in haddonfeild. Jamie's in a childrens ...psychiatric ward? Well regardless shes not really able to speak and still has a psychic connection with her uncle. And a man in black is out there helping Michael.
mediocre plot, of all the things to introduce the whole 'curse' story arc wasnt the best choice.
Not to mention the stupid man in black character helping michael escape bit.
3/10
SCRIPT
Dr.Loomis doesnt have as much to do this time and is also a lot crazier in this film. Using Jamie as bait for Michael in the filsm climax is...pretty questionable.
The film is plagued by lame kills are really stupid characters. I got tired of watching michael stab people fast, I wanted limbs hacked off, or torn off, or something more than just stabbing.
Pretty much everyone here is fodder minus Jamie adn loomis.
The cops in this film are dumber than before which ..really annoys me. You'd think in a town thats had a smany people murdered by the same serial killer they'd be more cautious and professional.
4/10
ACTING
A young Danielle Harris gives a grand performance as Jamie, Michaels tortured neice. She's gives a really belivable performance. Donald Pleasance as Dr.Loomis doesnt have as much to do this time and is also a lot crazier, I missed the calm but paranoid Loomis from the firts halloween film.
As everyone else here is fodder or just looking for a fuck...its hard to give them much of any rating. Guess I'll just have to score this on Pleasence and Harris.
7/10
EFFECTS
Blah, blah, blah, impalings, blah, blah, blah exploding car, blah, blah, blah, cop lynched at the Myers house..
3/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
Meh, s'ok. Its an 80's film and REALLY reeks of 80'sness. The interior of the Myers house is really overly dingy and dark. I dont like that they changed the Myers house's look into this quasi Victorian husk.
the overall films look is pretty generic.
4/10
EDITING
A smidge of tension in the laundry chute scene, but most of the film is slow and repetitive. More needed to happen, not just kills, but more story. the film just doesnt have an even pace.
5/10
DIRECTION
Not much quality direction here, but if they wanted quality they would have opted to have a stronger script. Its not terrible direction, but with Myers 'new' house, th eman in black, and rock stupid cops here to 'help'...it just got to me.
4/10
FUNFACTOR
Kind of entertaining to watch. a smidge of tension in a few scenes is good and Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris really make the movie. Better kilsl and a stronger story would have made this film so much better and more entertaining.
6/10
CHEESE!
Stupid fodder-esque teenagers? Check.

PLOT
a young girl becomes possessed by an evil entity and science cant do anything about it, Father Karras who's having troubles with faith is reluctantly sent in to handle the situation. A very, VERY slow battle of wills ensues.
I was expecting to be engrossed in this film after hearing so much about it for my whole life about it being scarey and terrifying...It's realyl justa slow as shit boring film.
4/10
SCRIPT
...yawn. The only character in the film worth paying attention to is father Karras who takes the approach of a skeptic and starts to realize how rotten and terrible the situation really is.
Little Reagan is only in the first 15 and last 5 minutes of the film, as shes possessed by the evil spirit.
Reagans mother is about as interesting a character as a toilet ina film about constipation. You dont want to see it, but you know its gonna be a big part of th efilm.
Everyone else is just there I noticed. Lt.Kinderman is an obnoxious old fart who kind of skulks around, father Dyer is just a little background character, father Merrin is in the first five and last 15 or so minutes of the film.
I really did not find this film or the characters engrossing or thought provoking.
3/10
ACTING
I REALLY fucking detested Ellen Burstyn after watchign this pile, Her perfromance is filled with over reactions, constant bitching and just really annoying. I understand what her character is and what shes going through, but I didnt buy this shit.
I liked Linda Blair as Reagan/Pazuzu, even though she didnt provide the evil voice, she still gave a really great performance.
Jason Miller as Father Karras is one of the highlights of the film, he gives a VERY natural and suttle performance that I really bought and liked.
Lee J. Cobb gives an old fart of a performance as Lt.Kidnerman who really doesnt have any purpsoe in the film other than to skulk around and annoy father karras.
Max on Sydow doesnt get to do anythign in this film I felt. The movies climax with him is just wasted.
5/10
EFFECTS
The effects in the film are still really good after almost 35 years. The head twist, the puke, the evil voice and a lot of the audio are quite good. even though special effects are pretty minimal in th efilm they work out just fine.

CINEMATROGOPHY
Decent lighting and dark shots which are ok, but the films look is really bland to me. Yes I know that its suppossed to have a 'realistic' look and feel to it, but you know some style would have added a lot to this pile.

PLOT
a young girl becomes possessed by an evil entity and science cant do anything about it, Father Karras who's having troubles with faith is reluctantly sent in to handle the situation.

PLOT
An archaelologist finds the book of the dead and accidentally summons a demon which possesses the living and turns them into foul creatures(deadites). Ash, our hero is forced to face this monster along with a crew of two rednecks, the archaelologists daughter, and her...friend? Never said whether he was her BF or anything.
A fun plot and some good fodderesque characters. Still I would have liked to have had a larger cast. Not just for more fodder, but I would have liked to see more Raimi characters.
7/10
SCRIPT
A pretty good script, not much in the way of character development for anyoen but Ash, but I'm cool with that. I loved it when the demon was screwing with Ash's head (laighing furniture, evil reflection, the hand itself). Bobby Jo and Jake are definitelly good fodder characters that didnt add much to the film, until Bobby Jo got tree'd and jake ended up becoming as much of a threat as the demon itself.
The monsters and things are memorable, the creation of Ash truly becoming a baddass is fantastic and the films ending is still a riot. I would have liked a bit more of a climax battle between Ash and Henrietta.
8/10
ACTING
Bruce Campbell as Ash, nuff said. Ted Raimi as Henrietta was fun, the rest of the dead actors here are fun, but really your focus of the film is on Ash, that being said I stuill did like Dan Hicks as Jake the 'ig'nant' hillbilly. He gave a good straight man performance and I loved his reaction to being stabbed in the chest.
8/10
EFFECTS
Some cheezy, but unsettling stop motion, nasty animatronic monsters, an evil hand, lots of blood and some fun dismemberments. Mut be why its a B movie fans favourite film to have.
7/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
I really love how Sam Raimi's style really develops in this movie. POV tracking shots of doom, dutch angles, and some really odd pans here and there define this film's oddness and adds some good creepyness.
8/10
EDITING
It's not the fastest film, but it gets the job done. WHile Army of Darkness did have a very smooth medium pace to it, this one builds itself up some. There are a lot of little things going on which hel pout the pacing though, the forrest coming to life, the characters starting to go crazy, Henrietta in the celler, and the evil hand.
7/10
DIRECTION
I'd definitelly define Sam Raimi as 'Alfred Hitchock' with a comic book addiction and twistedly juvenile sense of humor. While I'm still upset that spiderman 3 wasnt as good as the second one, every director is allowed to make a bad movie. Though in some cases too many make them for a quick box office buck (Boll, Scott, and Anderson, you sacks)
8/10

PLOT
An evil alien enters earth and proceeds to absorb/devour the inhabitants, and entire town is quarantined by the feds and its up to two young’ins to stop the blob.
Not the greatest plot, but it’s a good script and a fun film.
6/10
SCRIPT
Some nice character development, I was actually surprised to see some characters die that did, and the blob itself was a very effective and unsettling monster. The fact its not a hulking mass just sludging around and actually takes a few beastish forms, shoots out tentacles and sneaks through the town via pipes and what not was well written.
I liked a lot of the humor in the film, as well as characters. The only thing didn’t like was the priest character when the town is under attack and the ‘twist’ ending revolving around his character. I was very annoyed at this and found it quit unbelievable. That costs the script score a point.
However it has a nice twist about 3/4ths of the way into the movie that I wont spoil, it’s a pretty nice twist.
Not sure What Frank Darabont was thinking when he chose this ending, but he still wrote a very clever script.
7/10
ACTING
A Young Shawnee Smith best known as Amanda from ‘Saw’ plays our cheerleader love interest who’s actually a pretty smart character.
Our mullet wearing rebel is played by Kevin Dillon, and he’s a pretty smart guy as well. That’s something I liked about this script, there aren’t that many dumbass characters who stick out as fodder. The performances help establish this.
The supporting cast here doesn’t have much screen time as the main focus of the film is our biker/cheerleader combo.
8/10
EFFECTS
Smidge of stop motion, lots of blue screenery and some nice animatronics as well, help create this monster. It’s smart and it’s vicious.
While not all of the effects have aged that well, for the most part they work splendidly.
8/10
EDITING
I really dug the editing in this film. The pacing is really well and the cross cutting between separate small events added a lot of charm to the film.
9/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
The films look kind of varies. I’m not sure if it’s the film stock they used, but it seems a little over saturated in a lot of scenes. Might be an 80’s thing and all(the hero does indeed have a bad mullet).
The sewer scenes I thought had a nice semi ‘aliens’ look to them, where as the town looks like an oversaturated colorized version of the Andy Griffith show.
I understand they wanted a nice quiet town look and all, but it feels kind of forced in act one.
A lot of nicely shot sequences and some good shots cover this up.
7/10
DIRECTION
Some pretty good stuff here. I enjoyed how Chuck Russell didn’t over the top anything in the film, a nice villain, a nasty monster, some juicy gore and good tension and performances
8/10
FUNFACTOR
It’s got some nice suspense and some good freakish moments as well as some nifty gore. Definitely a fun film, while I would have liked a better ending than the one chosen, we cant have everything.
8/10
CHEESE!
The jabs as Jason Voorhees in the films theatre scene was pretty damn funny, as was the guy who wouldn’t shut up.The film had a lot of quality to it the only really cheese thing that stood out(aside from reverent) was when Shawnee Smiths character dives off a giant C02 container she just activated a bomb on and her foot gets caught.
Was kind of laughing at that.

PLOT
The serial killer 'Buffalo Bill' is out cutting up women, an FBI trainee Clairice Starling is sent to meet Dr.Hannibal Lecter and the game between Lecter and the FBI ensues. Unfortunatelly the daughter of a senator is Buffallo Bill's latest capture and now the pressure is on the FBI to capture Buffalo Bill and save the senators daughter. Ultimatelly it falls upon Clairice's shoulders to get info from Dr. Lecter as he just might be hiding some info.
Really great plot, I love how it starts off as just another sick fuck serial killer, but when he kidnapps the Senators daughter, the FBI starts to loose control of the situation.
10/10
SCRIPT
This is one of my favourite films and the script is just outstanding. I love Clairice's character development as well as all the constant reminders shes in 'a mans world'(the FBI at this time had like 99% male employees), I enjoyed the hint of attraction betwene her and Dr.Lecter.
Lecter himself is just such an amazing creation. It's too bad there has never been a sequel thats been able to do him justice.
I really loved the discussions between these two about Buffalo Bills psychological state as well as Lecter getting personal information from Clairice.
Very rarely in films have had conversations between two characters that are this interesting.
I alos liked how Catharine Martin, the senators daughter was a smart and strong character who didnt just sit back and be a victim.
Buffalo Bill himself, is a great creepy villain. He just radiates vileness.
This is very much a feminist horror film in lot of ways. The female characters stand out very strong in this film. They're not passive and they do fight back in one way or another.
I'm Glad that Ted Tally won an oscar for this film, after trying to get through the novel I really admore his screenwriting abilities. the Novel itself was a chore and I onyl ended up getting through about half of it before putting it down.
10/10
ACTING
There's a reason Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins won Oscar's for their portrayals as Clairice and Lecter. I loved all the performances in this film from the cast. So many scenes feel natural, even Lecter who's such a demon manages to seem almost real at times.
Ten out of ten.
10/10
MUSIC
Howard Shore did such an outstanding job here with the music in this film, its really wonderful atmospheric music that makes this film 'feel' so beautifully meloncholy.
10/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
Wonderfully artistic film with all kinds of dutch angles and shots I really love.
There are so many shots used in the scenes between Lecter and Clairice that really just make me go ga-ga as a film junkie.
Havent sene anyone since Orson Welles and Hitchock use 'Mis En Scene' like this
10/10
EDITING
The film has a slowish pace, but there are so many little things going on and so many things to pick out in the film that it doesnt get boring. It's a very engrossing film and there is one sequence when the FBI is raiding Buffalo Bills out that is SO fucking clever.
10/10
DIRECTION
Jonathan Demme really outdid himself as a director here and created a dark twisted portait of a film here. How he handles the tension and the performances in the movie are really superb. There'sa reaosn he also managed to snag an Oscar here.
10/10
FUNFACTOR
It's an engrossing film that captures your attention and really doesnt let go until the films climax. It's odd that the film doesnt feel like fun to watch, its so facinating though.
10/10
CHEESE!
It's not a cheezy film at all, the film has some humor but its really dead serious.
Usually cheesyness comes from 'so bad its good' dialogue, scenes or characters.
Once again I'm kind of at a loss on how to score a film liek this with the cheese score.
So I guess I'll just have to award it 10 bonus points like I did the last film I had this dilemma with.
10/10
OVERALL
90/90= 'A'
Thats right another perfect score.Very few horror films or films that have horror in them earn a score like this. Really makes me appricate films like 'Psycho' and 'Silence of the lambs' and realize special these two films are.
Granted they also have a link to realize as Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill are inspired by Ed Gein who's mother fixation and 'skin suit' really have become so legendary twisted.

Not anti review. Anti 'folks thinking reviews are anything but long opinions'. There is a difference. Many reviews seem to glorify one person's opinion to make it seem more important than others. Since folks almost never have the same tastes in movies, this glorified position is quite misleading... often resulting in some folks avoiding movies they would otherwise enjoy merely because someone said review rather than opinion. Think of it as a dislike of the fun combination of human gullibility and personal ego boosting. Don't get me wrong, some reviews are quite good; unbias, to the point, and well detailed in regards to the movie in question. But, they are vastly outnumbered these days.
Your knee-jerk reaction to attack anyone who disagrees with your opinions in this thread have clearly marked you in my eyes, so I consider you part of the problem. Still, parts of your reviews have merit so you are not a complete loss. :appl:

Well I'm not in anyone's particular side per-say, since everyone made some valid points, but I'm just saying that I've gotten slack before too, and it's best to just let it slide, because some people just can't take a difference in opinion. When you post a review for many to read, you're bound to get at least one person who has a strong opinion that differs greatly from your own. In my experience I just let'em say what they gotta say and then let that be that; it's a lot easier that way.

PLOT
A reality tv show is being filmed near some redneck cannibals home and as they’ re not fans of reality tv, they butcher and hack up the contestants. Suddenly the survival wannabe show contestants end up playing ‘survival the real game’
Theres a reason this film was direct to dvd. And the stupid plot doesn’t due that snide comment I just made enough justice.
3/10
SCRIPT
Yet again another attempt at making a scream type dark comedy splatter film.
The kills for the most part are crap. Yes there’s the pretty girl getting axed in two in the opening, but for the most part that’s it. From then on its mainly people getting shot with arrows, or hacked/stabbed with knives or even cleave din the head with an axe.
What you expected me to rate this piece of shit on its story structure and character development? There’s no real story, we have yet another Texas chainsaw massacre/hills have eyes rip off here.
Only everything is more gratuitous, there is no subtle in the film really.
We do get a little character development in a few characters which is cool. But the movie doesn’t give a shit about the characters so why should you.
Yeah the Colonal character ends up being a pretty decent hero, as does angry quasi-goth girl…But a before you dont give a shit about these characters. They’re all given a smidge of humanity around the stereotypes they are…but that’s it.
Also Why the fuck are these dumbass Hickannibals so inhuman? One gets his neck broken and just pops it back in place, not to mention getting a knife in the chest(to the hilt). I don’t believe the whole ‘radioactive waste’ suggestion the film implies at all.
They’re a joke if anything. Also WHY do we need to see one masturbating and then having sex with his sister later on? This film has no point other than to shove this shit in your face.
4/10
ACTING
Some above average performances, but all the damn ‘Hickannibals’ looks the same and act the same for the most part.
The main cast of Erica Leerhsen, Texas Battle and Henry Rollins does a pretty good job. I think they’re all really to good for this low end garbage. Actually I felt that way about pretty much all the cast.
6/10
EFFECTS
Mediocre and so-so, some crappy CGI gore here and there, as before the majority of the kills are really lame. Kimberly’s death in the beginning is the only one to stand out and I was kind of annoyed at it really.
6/10
EDITING
Really bad. The pacing of this garbage is pretty slow and there are only a handful of mildly suspenseful scenes. There’s nothing to report here but mediocrity.
4/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
What the FUCK is wrong with the way things are shit in this goddamn film!? SO much of this crap looks like it was shot by a fucking spider monkey. This sack of a film was harder to watch than a speech from the president.
2/10
DIRECTION
Joe Lynch, how appropriate a director has a last name pertaining to what he deserves for directing this garbage the way he did. Totally pathetic.
2/10
FUNFACTOR
Not fun at all, it’s a damn waste of time. This film aspires to be ‘resident evil bad’.
0/10
CHEESE!
The cheese works against this sack of shit film. It’s not fun to watch and it’s a chore to watch and has no value in my eyes.

I think I'm short one review so I'll toss up this last one.
PLOT
A young woman dies after an exorcism adn the priest involved is arrested for manslaughter, only his agnostic lawyer can save him from going to jail for...GASP! ten years. Bu tthere are outside forces workign against them on this case, outside forces that arent human.
This is an EXCELLENT plot. very unique and creative. But thast the best you're gonna hear abtou this crap from me.
8/10
SCRIPT
This script is bland, crappy, and offensivley predictable. 75% of the time you know whast going to happen. Evil lawyer disproves everything in courtroom...check, surprise witness comes out with info..check. Surprise witness dies before he can give testimony..check.
Evil forces annoy agnostic lawyer..check.Agnostic lawyer becomes a beliver in god again..check.
the only mild surprise was the priest is found guilty of murder, but aquitted...or something like that.
Not much character development to speak of, and the pacing of narcaleptic slugs having sex with eachother.
5/10
ACTING
There is a pretty experienced cast here, laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Campbell Scott, and Colm feore. All of whom are very good actors...So why is everyone restrained, stilted and boring? WHy arent we getting any real emotion or intensity?
Because the director in charge is a dumbfuck who cant craft a decent script, or direct a decent film. I dread his future projects and the talented performers who get stuck working with him.
Ona side Note Jennifer Carpenters performance as Emiyl Rose/evil devil girl...wasnt that convincing. ANyone can do a decent Linda Blair impersenation, but it takes a really stupid director to take that idea and beat it to death with over the top spazzyness.
It was really a fucking riot watching her switch between german, greek and arameaic while imitating Jim Carrey's 'grinch' on acid.I'm sure she sa fin actress, but not in this crappy film.
We never see EMilys human side, just Emiyl when shes freaked out and tortured by the demons. But thats a script issue, not an actress issue.
4/10
EFFECTS
While there are some good bits of CGI creepyness, when Emily is possessed and all devil like...it hard to take seriously.this is where we really needed to her a deep upsetting voice instead of Jennifer carpenter tyrign to do an evil voice hersel. it really sounded hammy and unconvincing.
6/10
CINEMATOGROPHY
I'm sorry what the fuck is wrong with the director and DOP? this film is overly dark which makes it hard to see whast going on at times, the bullshit shakey cam kicks in at times which is always offensive in my eyes. Not to mention how the courtroom scenes are filmed is by far the MOST boring crap filmed on camera, there is no real drama in these scenes or intensity or much of anything. The very few reactions you get from points and counter points made aren't much.
4/10
EDITING
the films pacing is very slow and not much happens, hell when something does happen it's not much either. This movie could have been a lot faster, its not very suspenceful nor is it scary. I ws very dissapointed at hwo amateurish this film was in look, script and direction.
4/10
DIRECTION
Scott Derrickson is a collosal waste of hollywood money and resources. His direction is almost George lucas bad, and his writing is about on par there as well.
Only a true idiot could take a true story(actually occured in Germany) and turn it into crap.
2/10
FUNFACTOR
Its onyl fun if you have friends in the room to hekcle the movie with you, other than that *YAWN*
3/10
CHEESE!
Oh yeah, the bad kind too.
-2/10

Fuck this film and the hype it got. It wasnt anything more than rehashed courtoom drama, a cliche script and rotten direction.
Read up the real story on WIkipedia. The 5 minutes you get there is better spent than 2 hours of this garbage.

Yeps.though things arent any easier when you have a thread stalker doing everything he can to discourage you. I'll stick to my odd tastes.
I cant help it, for the most part I like substance over style. Though when I come accross a film that has substance and style its hard to not love it.
S'why I love psycho and silence of the lambs so much. Yeah neither are straight horror and are more thrillers than anything, but they do have horror in them.
I love horror to death, I'm just greatly dissapointed in the fact there arent more films I like.
Been mroe dissapointed in the popular japanese horror films that people say scare them to death. Ju-on and Ringu werent really...much of anything. Though in its defense, Ju-on DID have more going on than Ringu did.
Here's hoping 'one missed call' ends up better.

Exorcism of Emily Rose was pretty good in my opinion, but then again, I knew it was a drama film before I went to see it. It misled lots of folks.
As far as your (re)views, I respected them, but it was hard to accept anything as an actual review because you gave negative points, which I don't believe in doing. If something missed a mark, it should be zero and not, in turn, take points away from other categories.
Other than that, I had fun reading this thread through the past few days.

Undertsandable. I knew the Exorcism of Emily rose was gonna be more courtroom drama than anything as well, but it was so badly filmed, written and directed that it just hurt to watch, and it had such a really good plot as well.
Thats kind of why I got the negative points option for the cheese segment of the reviews. Because movie cheese itself is a double edged sword, because every film has good and bad cheezy aspects to it. when the bad cheezy aspects are to great it really does ruin the film for me. It can also just really out of the blue hurt to watch.
Justa little thing of mine I suppose. thanks fo rbeing understanding on the reviews though Boo. Some folks rather revert to attacking rather than discuss or bring up points they didnt agree with.
Granted I'm guilty of this as well, but I really am trying to not revert to that crap and discuss stuff instead. different points of view can be interesting to talk about.

S'ok. Not gonna say you gents arent allowed to like the film :)
If anyone is wondering why I am am how I am on films in gernal, its because I'm a film student. Five years back I was warned by my film teachers that 'once you learn how they do all this, the magic is gone and theres no way to get it back'.
But it also goes beyond all that, I had a friend teach me how to think outside the box at the same time. Thats why 'Silence of the lambs' and 'Psycho' are the only films that got perfect scores.
Watch them, look at how unique they both are in how the stories are told. Look at all the weird 'mis en scene' in both and the clever scripts.
To me thats how more horror and suspence films should be. Not saying everything should strive to be art, but they should strive to be more indipendent.
Thats one of the biggest reasons why I fucking hate Paul W.S Anderson all he does is recycle what we've already seen, take from other better directors and writers and slap his name on the project. Thats not helping anyone but himself, it doesnt add to any genre, it takes away from it.
Being an idealist, thats a big fucking sin to me. With everything that you could do for a movie, why 'copy and paste'? Thats incredibly fucking lazy and downright pathetic.
Just how I feels on the matter, thought I'd at least explain part of myself here to nayone who might be wondering.
