What's your favorite(s) horror films set in the past? I'd say mine are The Others, Dead Birds, Sleepy Hollow. I think horror films set in the past are pretty cool usually, especially if the filmmakers take advantage of it and use excellent visuals and props.

(PS - I posted this because I remembered talking about it before somewhere. I thought it was here originally and did a search but found nothing. So sorry if this is indeed a repost.)

Braindead is a period horror film....even though it's ambiguous about it's time frame, you can still tell it's the 50s.

Ravenous is a good one. Ginger Snaps 3 aint bad. Perfume is amazing, not really a horror movie though.

I always wondered what the hell was going on in the background with that movie. Seeing the cars and what not - but it takes place in New Zeland, having lived in America all my life, who knows what the 50's were like in NZ?

Dead Alive all the way.

I loved "From Hell" and "Army of Darkness" is great too.

Worst: An American Haunting (as far as period peices that I've seen go, I'm sure many of you can think of worse films than this.)

Meh.

And yeah, Perfume was pretty crazy. I liked it.

I hear most of the people who liked Perfume were fans of the director, that if you weren't familiar with his work it's hard to enjoy; would you agree with that?

And how can you sully the good name of The Devil's Rejects with a "meh"?

I don't even know who directed Perfume lol. I just know I liked some of the visuals the movie had and the story was crazy. Ending sucked, but oh well.

As for the Devil's Rejects "meh"-ing. I just didn't like it. Started out good, went downhill after the semi-truck "incident", then had a cool ending. Meh.

Horror flicks set in the future could also be considered period pieces I suppose. In that case though, there haven't been many good ones haha. Leprechaun In Space, Dracula 3000 (or whatever it was), Jason X....

I didn't know who the director was when I saw it and I enjoyed the hell out of it, even the ending.

Sleepy Hollow
Bell Witch the Movie(not An American Haunting that movie sucked ass juice imo)
Bram Stokers Dracula

and probably not considered a horror movie but I also liked The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer.

I know its not really a horror film more of a thriller but I thought Zodiac did a great job in not only showing a time period but jumping around to several and staying very accurate right down to the types of cars and billboards yould see in the background. I was way impressed with that movie. From Hell was pretty good too I guess. The gore in the movie seemed to be straight from Cannibal Corpse's 'The Bleeding' cover.

I don't know if Frankenstein is really a period movie, unless you're referring to the remake w/ Robert De Niro. The original Frankenstein was a modernization of Mary Shelly's, so it was taking place in the present, if I remember correctly the movie wasn't trying to replicate the nineteenth century.
