WASHINGTON - Millions of Chinese-made toys have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful “date rape” drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.
With only seven weeks until Christmas, the recall is yet another blow to the toy industry — already bruised by a slew of recalls last summer.
In the United States, the toy goes by the name Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy distributed by Toronto-based Spin Master Toys. It is called Bindeez in Australia, where it was named toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year.

As just an average joe, I would find this annoying, but as a parent... I find it goddamn infuriating. How many more fuckin' poisonous toys from China am I gonna have to look out for?!! I'm seriously at the point that if it says "Made In China", I am not going to buy it. I don't give a shit how cool the toy is or how bad my kids want it.
If the chinese manufacturing industry is content to keep chucking toxic toys at our kids, I think it's about time for american toy companies to consider finding a different source of sweatshop labor to exploit in producing their goods... or better yet, eat a little bit of the old profit margin and bring those manufacturing jobs here, where shit like this might be caught easier.
What pisses me off the most is I know that nothing will come of it... the Chinese will still keep making our toys, we'll keep buying them, and next thing you know, another big recall after yet another group of kids get sick or die.

I think every single production batch of toys coming into this country needs to have a items fully tested BEFORE the toys are allowed to hit the shelves. Not just random checks here and there... EVERY SINGLE PRODUCTION BATCH should have independent analysis and safety checks before the shit even has a chance of touching the hands of an american child.

I'm actually for banning chinese made products. I'm sick of the outsourcing bullshit here in the US and want us to be more indipendent. We need to quit being so damn dependant on China making our shit.
I'd like to see more being done to have products for the US, made by the US. Its been a long time since I've seen 'made in the USA' on a product.
Fuck China's government and its lack of humanity.

I read somewhere a while back that you gotta watch out for shit that says "Made In USA".... as there is actually a town in China named "Usa" where a lot of shit is manufactured and proudly display "made in usa" on the labels....
But I totally agree with you, I'm sick as hell of all of the jobs being exported out of this country, the Fed driving down the worth of the dollar, all the yuppies thinking they're rich when the dollar isn't with a fart in a windstorm... our economy is one big anal rape.

I always check to see if something is made in China, and if it is, I don't buy it.

honestly you can blame the fact that we are a capitalist nation that has no laws restricting corporations and what they can and cannot do in this country.it bullshit.

Are you kidding me? The laws are pretty stiff for what a corporation "can and cannot do". Enron is a prime example of that. Not to mention the telecommunications company "Quest" in Denver, Colorado, to which the CEO just got 20 years in the slammer for fraud.

maybe some recent crackdowns but you forget what many meatpacking companies do behind the government's back, and how medical care runs rampant......or insurance companies?????? ringing and bell????? If these so called laws are in place then where is the action being taken? i havent seen shit. I still believe what happens in office is controlled by corporate dollar..,i don't care to elaborate..

My place of business has a permit hanging on the wall. This permit allows the place of business to have an alarm in its building without the owners incurring fines or jail time.
There are regulations out the ass over every petty aspect of running a business. It almost ensures that only the greediest and most crooked have a chance.
But if we really want to go into corporate America versus socialist utopia then this is the wrong place to take the anti-capitalist stance. The larger of the two nanny states is the one with controlling interest in a lot of these manufacturing plants. The larger of the two nanny states is actively involved with creating these goods in order to save another of "the people's" dollars at every turn.

I find it funny how we only get are undies in a knot when it pertains to us, yet if it were a Chinese , Indian, African, Spanish, or wherever else child no one would blink twice. The toy could have easily come into contact with anyone and it would have been just as much of a tragedy, child or adult.
We outsource nearly everything. Hell the rice you eat is'nt even grown in this country. Yet to sit there and say that you refuse to buy anything from China would be of huge hypocrisy.
Face it, this country was built mostly on greed, slavery, and deceit. Until we finish working on a lot of issues we will continue to outsource and rely on other countries to do the jobs that "we are too good for" and too lazy to do.

Hypocrisy shit.
When the fuckin' rice I eat makes me sick, I'll stop buying shit from whatever country it's from too. And to be honest, when it comes to kids, I get pissed when it's MY KIDS that are put in danger... sure, it's bad when any kid is put in danger, but my kids are what's important to me... my kids happen to be American kids, a country that spews so much crap about "protecting its kids" and yet allows thish shit to happen... thus my indignation.
You don't have to sit there and pontificate about what this country does and what it's built on... you're preaching to the fuckin choir, man.... but I think you are wrong on the "why" of American Outsourcing. It isn't that we outsource jobs that Americans consider themselves "too good for"... There are many Americans that were quite content doing those jobs, but the companies that supplied those jobs would rather not pay American wages to do those jobs and shipped them elsewhere.

They should make it illegal to outsource jobs to other countries, and Americans should only by American products. 2 things that will never happen. So what can you do?

well that wouldnt work considering alot of source materials are shipped from other countries, for example a lot of wood is shipped from my province

I can agree, and love being American just as much as the next guy, but for some people to sit on here and say that we should never buy things from other countries are talking nonsense. Half the world would not even be at peace with each other if it was not for trading and outsourcing. Especially OIL, which is a whole other bag of sticks in itself.
Now if everyone stopped outsourcing tomorrow, the economy would crash faster than Final Destination 2.

Anything that "goes on behind the laws back" does so because no one brings it to light. If I steal your car, nothings going to happen to me if you don't report it. If someone has a problem with the ethics and behavior of their company, it's their job to bring it forward...if they don't...they can't complain when shit doesn't happen. Quest is\was one of the most successful telecomunications companies in the world...their "corporate dollar" didn't mean shit.

No one's saying not to buy from other countries....what WB is trying to say is that when we do, it needs to be quality stuff...and especially when it's products that will come into contact with out children, extra care needs to be taken in inspections to make sure there is no danger.
