pfft for me its not even close. The Thing.

Even though just thinkin' 'bout a shark eatin' me scares the shit outta me.

Jaws baby. If you look at it, at its time, there was nothing like it. The camera angles directly at the surface, the robotic shark of course, and the acting alone just slays me. It's by far one of the best movies ever made in my opinion. I do LOVE the Thing though. Not to discredit it at all. Just my choice.

On the surface, one would ask: "what the fuck do these two movies have in common, other than being hailed as 'classics?" But I would go into this poll thinking about the character driven aspects of both movies as common ground... fuck, these two movies had hellacious character/actor mojo going on...

Brody, Quint and Hooper in Jaws... some righteous interraction going on there.

Mac, Childs, Nauls, Palmer, Fuchs, Blair, Garry... Fuckin' dynamic paranoia and intellectual pontification mixed with bitchin' bravado...

All in all, I love both movies... but I'm gonna go with what is one of my all time faves.... The Thing.

I'm gonna go with The Thing cuz its one of my all time favorites, BUT these are both 2 great films for different reasons. The Thing has great special effects but Jaws really messes with your fears better I think though. The Fear of being eatin alive, and the fear of sharks that most people have. And the fear of the unseen predator just below the surface. The beginning seen of Jaws is still one of the most chilling things ever filmed. And you never see blood. So I'm gonna go with The Thing cuz I love it. But Jaws is great too.

I'm gonna go with "The Thing". It just has so much more tension. But I gotta say, "Jaws" and "The Thing" shouldn't really be compared to each other.

I picked both of these movies because 99% of horror movie fans love these movies. I figured it would be a tough choice for some people.

They are completely different flicks.
But The Thing takes it easily.

It has been awhile since we've had one of these. Pretty good poll Dead :coolbeer:

The Thing for the simple reason of the creature effects done with modest materials on an even more modest budget will continue to impress film watchers and makers for quite some time. Who cannot respect a crap-head walking across a room followed by a solid, "You got to be fucking kidding me...'. :movies:

Not thats jaws is a bad movie. I simply erspect creativity with limited funds alot. Jaws is a defining shark movie as well as monster suspense in many respects.

Near impossible to pick between these two. I'm going to pick JAWS because of Quint. Shaw is pure genious.

Both good, but it's got to be Jaws. The movie scared me into not going into the water at the beach for a long time. The Thing didn't do anything like that for me. But, it's a close one.

Jaws is a better movie imo. It also had 13 nominations, 9 wins and 3 Oscars doesn't hurt either. not to mention it stirred up the shark craze and fear of sharks for years. great movie.

Apples and oranges. I've always enjoyed the gross-out effects and claustrophobia of 'The Thing', so for me it gets the edge.

'Jaws' has far better characters.

The only reason I picked The Thing over Jaws was because of my fear of the ocean. I'll get killed by aliens before my ass will EVER go on the ocean long enough for a shark to get me.Plus The Thing is one of the rare remakes that is actually better than the original.

They are both great movies though it just all comes down to preference.

Gotta love the good ol great white shark.

Demon of the sea. Struck fear into people for years and years after the movie. Not just himself but other sharks like him.

Jaws for me. The great white was in its own league.

Jaws is definitely more original, and in terms of the quality of both movies, they're about equal, both really great, so in that regard I think there's some bias in posting that poll on this site; a natural inclination to lean towards the more violent or the more visceral experience. I still say The Thing, but I think I'm kinda biased about it too.

Although I watched The Thing again this summer, I hadn't seen it in like two years, and I thought it developed kind of slowly. Similar to Alien, with movies where the build up is to something you don't see for a while, second and third viewings just seem like they take too long to get to the good stuff.
