I was looking at the Jeepers Creepers 3 thread, thinking it was one of the only good monster movies in the past few years (pt. 1), and I started trying to think of monster movies made in the past like 30 years, after that boom of giant monster movies from the fifties and sixties. I think Predator would qualify as one, and a really good one too. I don't know which others, it's one of those things where you know of a lot, but they don't come to mind. I can think of C.H.U.D and The Thing (even though they were aliens, still...).
So just thoughts on it, what do you guys think were the best monster movies of the past few years? Any thoughts on their decline in popularity or why they were kinda taken over by the slasher and ghost sub-genres?
Oh, and I guess The Mist will be the newest one.

Your mention of predator without mention of the more horror genre related Alien disturbs me greatly. :dsp:
Still, besides the Creeper of JC and C.H.U.D.? I offer the movie Phantoms for one semi original monster. Also, Deep Rising's giant squid thing. Mimic's Big Bugs. Alone in the dark, dispite being a crap movie, had mildly original creature ideas. Decent gave a different creature look at sub-humans. The Cave's bat-humanoids were fairly creative... before the various follow up rip off flicks. Also...FEAST, who can argue with that monster flick. Lickers from Resident evil movies (hate the movies if you wish, but you got to appreciate the lickers).
Enjoy...

Still 50s is not past 30 years. :haht:
Good call with the Faculty though, great monster idea though the movie was weak (wont mention the body snatcher/puppet masters rip off). Alot of the monsters I can think of are aliens. Real home grown buggers are a bit harder to think up...

Aliens are not monsters so you can rule out Aliens, Faculty, etc.

Hate to see that, if rumors remain. No disrespect to Rob, but he has a certain take on films and I can't see C.H.U.D. sitting well in a Rob image.

I agree. Its just not his kind of movie. Maybe that'll be his ecuse for "reimagining" it.

The "thing" on the wing of the plane in Twilight Zone was a creepy monster.

The Faculty was made in the 90's. I remember it coming out when I was in high school. As for monster flicks i'd say The Relic had a sweet monster in it. Also think The Gargoyle in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie was cool. Demon Knight and In the Mouth of Madness featured good monsters.

Maybe Cloverfield will offer us something that'll go down in the Monster Hall of Fame. God knows he's already got the amount of hype of a new Godzilla movie.
Has anyone here seen Sid & Nancy? Because the woman who plays Sid Viscious's girlfriend>fiance>wife is quite a big bag of ugly and I would say borderline monstrous.

I'm beginning to think The Creeper's been the best of the past few years.

Sticking to non-alien monsters in the last 20-30 that isn't a remake? Then, yea... I agree as well.

Definitely the cannibal people creatures from the Descent. Monsters usually dont scare me but that movie freaked me out. How about the alien things that take over peoples bodies in Meatball Machine. I know meatball machine was total crap but couldnt stop watchng it and i made everyone i know watch it too. for those of you who havent seen it, its kind of like power rangers with a lot of blood and a chicks eyes get drilled out.
