I was told buy a salesman at Best Buy you could buy this DVD player that makes your DVD's HD quality so you can watch them. Anyone heard of or have this player? I really dont wanna start shelling out my first unborn child to pay for HDDVDS. Insanely expensive.

That would be an upconverter, and they don't really make regular dvds high-def, they just increase the details of the image a bit. You can usually find'em anywhere from $80 to $200.

If you're in need of a new dvd player, then maybe, but if you're current player is fine, I wouldn't recommend going out and buying one, especially if you plan on gettin' a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player in the future, because they also upconvert regular DVDs.

I was going to ask that Fright. (The question being, wouldn't an HD DVD upconvert as well?)

Assuming they do, isn't there also a new HD-DVD player that sells for about $200? I swear the thread is in this forum somewhere.

I believe any high-def player (HD-DVD and BluRay) will upconvert regular dvds to 1080p.

Also, Luris, assuming you don't have an xbox360, Toshiba has a few HD-DVD players in the 200-250$ range, and you can quite often catch a sale to get them for cheaper. Just be careful with what model it is, certain ones such as the Toshiba HD-A2 will only go up to 1080i, not 1080p.

The cheapest dual format player I've seen is about $700, so unless theres a cheaper one I've missed, or space is an issue, it can work out cheaper to get 2 seperate players.

Yeah, there are some HD-DVD players out there now around $200 now. The duel-format players are fairly pricey still at the moment. You'd be lucky to find'em under $500, but you never know, with all these sales during the holidays.

ohhhh I just assumed they didn't upconvert regular DVD's. Well that makes this easier then.

Most people agree that HD players are the best for upconverting.
