Great movie! Not as good as City of God, but definitely a Brazilian movie that must be seen. The flick pretty much follows three central characters, namely the captain in BOPE, which is pretty much what we'd consider the SWAT here in the US. The captain narrates the film from the beginning, and in the first hour we follow two honest police men as they witness the corruption in the force and after an "incident", decide to join BOPE. The captain plans on leaving his position and one of the two characters will eventually take his place.
Excellent character development for the first half, and as the second begins, the story kicks into gear as we watch the men go through the arduous trials to get into BOPE. The shit hits the fan towards the end of the film when something happens, which leads the squad to hunt down a local boss who's hiding somewhere within the slums. The Weinstein's will release this film via limited release January 25th (according to IMDB), so if your theater gets this, I recommend checking it out.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia regarding the film, also courtesy of IMDB:
This film was already a best-seller almost three months before its official release. Illegal copies of what the director called the "3rd cut" flooded the streets of all major capitals in Brazil, for the equivalent of five dollars a piece. Criminal investigation revealed that the original DVD was robbed in the Company Drei Marc, which does the subtitles. According to estimates at least three million people watched the bootleg version, which is one million more than the biggest Brazilian film that year (A Grande Família - O Filme) managed during its theatrical run.
