I'm addicted to playing this game. I recently switched servers to play with my coworkers. I only have a lvl 16 Warlock Blood Elf. And my character's name is the same as here, Prettyrotten.

I quit playing for a year a while back, but started up again when the first expansion was released, but I quit a few months later after I reached 70 and got my elite flying mount. I sold off my acct., so it's unlikely I'll ever return, but you never know.

I finally tried this one out over the weekend. It's like all the terrible controls in Second Life fused with all the terrible, ambiguous quests in Everquest.
"Take this letter to the other side of the country." That's like, every fantasy roleplayer's dream come true. I totally had a level fourteen wizard in D&D who had, like, eighty-twelve skill points in mail carrying!

Those types of quests are really made just give you good reason to explore other parts of the map, but the game does kinda suck when you get those types of quests before you get your mount at lvl 40, because it takes forever by running.

played beta, played a few months after launch and quit because there was nothing left to do but grind for items for guild members every second I logged in. No joke, once I logged in, I was 'forced' to meet up with the guild and grind. I got burnt out.
My guild was awesome. we had the most respect, best pvpers, first to hit lvl 60, mount, and max crafting and get crazy enchantments & crafted weapons.

I didn't want to start a new one. I have been thinking about getting into this game. I really won't have time to play it as much as the hardcore fans out there, but I guess I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to even bother playing it if I couldn't devote a lot of time to it.
Also, is anybody selling it used? The battlechest + WotLK is $80+ not to mention subscription fees. I guess I'm just looking for some input from those WoW veterans out there. is this game really worth the time and money?
FrighT MasteR
04-03-2009, 06:25 PM
It depends really, you can play it casually (like I did), which is fun for a while, but when you hit the level cap (80) you'll likely be bored by it. Unless you devote yourself by that time to get certain items or gear, then there's nothing left to do but PvP, which can be a bit pointless unless you have good gear (which would require you to devote a bit of time to get anyway).
So is it worth it? Unless you have a lot of extra $$ laying around, I don't think it's worth the money if you don't plan on playing much.

WoW loses its appeal rather fast, unless you have always been into the grind-a-game mindset set down by prior generations, like Everquest. I have hopes for some MMOs in development, like the KOTOR one and maybe the Stargate one though not high hopes because few MMOs seem to come out well lately. For now, the MMO selection is slim pickings. At least we have some decent consol games around.

Well... I wasn't in servers allowing that behaviour. Im in servers with good lore behind. For example, currently i'm a Forsaken mage and, in my role, Im the archmage of Undercity commanding all mages and warlocks. Sounds "nerdy" but I see it as a strategy game. Imagine, in war situations I have to command my forsakens to victory in the field (not different of games like W3 or C&C, only changing IA soldiers with real players).

Ever since I started playing Fallout 3 again I've been getting into an upgrade and talent points mood, so I've been entertaining the idea of getting back into WoW, but instead of joining a PvP server like I usually do, I'd give the old Normal server a try. Considering I don't like world PvP I figured I may enjoy the experience a lot more.
I've only been on a Normal server once and I only went up to level 7 before I switched to PvP where my friend was at. I was thinking of starting a Death Knight again. If anyone's playing or thinkin' bout starting up again then lemme know :whew:

Well since the winter is coming up, I might start up playing it then. I love MMO's. I was madly addicted to City of Villains for about a year. Age of Conan was another fantastic game, but all the bugs in it turned me off. Got to a level 38 and it was it. WoW, the highest I got was about to level 18 and then I quit. I also played Hellgate London which was supposed to be this amazing game and I didn't get too far on that either. So, when the winter comes up, I might start me up a death knight for shits and gigs.

Never played City of Villains since I'm not all that into comics much, nor have I tried Age of Conan. I did play Hellgate London, which got VERY tiring after a while.
If you start up a Death Knight you'd need to get a character up to level 55 first, so you'd have to work that level 18 for a bit.
I've quit WoW so many times, I think I usually play for a month or two, then quit, but return like 6 months later. That has been my routine for a while, but at least this time it'll be on a Normal server and with a Death Knight. The Last Death Knight I messed with only made it to level 62, I believe.

...I've taken a look at and/or played several other MMOs but none have the appeal of WoW for me. None of them have any animation talent working in their ranks. None of them have good character design. I like the "illusion of life" that you only find in WoW that makes it possible for the tens of thousands (or more) player made videos possible and capable of holding a viewer's interest. I like PvP videos more than straight machinema but recognize the effort folks put into either. Can't really do it to the same level with other games.

I loved that video Burneett... first time I saw it I couldn't stop laughing.... as for WOW... i played it a long time, but as I said in this thread before... the expansions are killing it off... EQ was the greatest MMO probally ever, but it killed itself off when it kept expanding because you never give it a chance to let new people in an enjoy. You have to be upper levels to enjoy the game now... what level 60 raids are still done?
BurnetRhoades
01-31-2012, 06:04 PM
Actually, I do quite a few lvl60 (and sometimes lvl70) raiding solo now, to get items for transmogrification. It's pretty common now to see groups forming to go into older raid content specifically to get older items for the "bling bling", even on a server like Skullcrusher that's had its population dwindle a bit during Cataclysm. Transmogrification has added renewed interest in older content, a lot of which is more interesting than current instances.
They added that in a previous patch, transmogrification. You go to an ethereal shop in either Stormwind or Orgrimar and you can make any current piece of gear look like another that you have, for nostalgia or just because the stats are great on a new item but you don't like the looks. For instance, I've got most of my rogue's current gear looking like Tier1 (Nightslayer), with a mixture of Dungeon3 (Assassination), just 'cause I always liked the looks of it and I knew most other rogues are gonna be running around in T2 (Bloodfang) or T5 (that one that makes you look like Skelator).
You're right though about this expansion though. Wrath of the Lich King, though it had its critics, was a much cooler experience. The dungeons, although short, were definitely nicer to look at (nicer than BC dungeons as well), besides the Argent Tourney stuff, which was boring after the first time or two you did it.
Blizzard's attempt to create a "PvP Zone" has improved from expansion to expansion (Tol Barad in Cataclysm>Wintergrasp in Lich>Halaa in BC>Eastern Plaguelands and Silithus in Vanilla), though spontaneous World-PvP is at an all-time low currently for a variety of reasons that hopefully they'll fix in the next expansion. Concentration of each faction to a single capital city each and less need to actually go to instance/raid portals and meeting stones was a bad move on Blizzard's part.
But, they have continued to make it easier for folks to jump in or level alt characters. If you already have at least one high level character you can purchase several pieces of what are called Heirloom gears which scale as your character levels and are bind-on-account so you can send them between alt characters. About half of the gear slots are currently covered, giving you a possible rare/blue quality item that you never have to replace during the leveling process.
Four of these slots (head, shoulder, back and chest) are also itemized to boost your XP gained by 10% each (5% for the cloak) for a total of 35% free XP. This sums with other boosts like Rested-XP (double experience killing monsters) and there's also an XP boost you can get from a guild perk (among other benefits, like lowered vendor pricing, higher probability for skill increases, etc.).
They've also compressed the XP necessary to level with each expansion so even without the gear getting from 1-60 takes about half as much effort as it did in Vanilla, 60-70 about half the effort it took in BC and 70-80 goes much quicker than it did in Wrath. I played only one character in Vanilla, my rogue, and made my first alt character near the end of BC but the inclusion of heirlooms and XP compression has meant it was finally fun to play with other classes, because the leveling is so fast now.
With rested and a full set of the boost heirlooms it's not uncommon to get upwards of 2.5 levels out of a single dungeon run. That's no exaggeration. Or half a level out of a single BG played.
edit: there's an interesting alternative for folks who are only interested in the original WoW 1-60 content. One of the more famous players from my server, Gummy, has been putting in a ton of work on World of Scriptcraft, which looks to be the first ever "private server" experience worth investigating. He's been putting in a lot of effort to faithfully recreate the original experience and isn't adding the cheeseball "godmode" stuff you find with others.

It coincided with Hallow's End just before the release of Wrath of the Lich King. These mysterious crates started showing up at the docks and in cities that would start slowly changing folks that got infected by their aura into ghouls if they weren't cleansed. The rate of contagion got shorter and shorter progressively through the event.
Once turned into a ghoul all other players became attackable, allowing you to infect them. This caused quite a ruckus on PvE realms because it didn't matter whether they were flagged or not, in a city or not. Nobody was safe from the ghouls which would spread from NPC to NPC, via AI interaction but also player to player and player to NPC, etc. Towards the peak of the infection the Auction House became almost unusable, not to mention flight masters and major leveling quest hubs. The QQ was epic but very short sighted.
Eventually folks started organizing ghoul raids on cities, coordinating getting infected, spreading to as many nearby NPCs as possible, rallying the newly ghoulified NPCs and then attacking as a giant group. This necessitated counter-ghoul defensive parties formed by the goody-goody types, especially those playing paladins. And more QQ.
The epidemic eventually spread to Outland and even the Island of QD where not even the nagas were safe from being infected and turned to ghouls.
edit: oh, and near this time Blizz also brought back the Argent Crusade event, like the one that preceded the addition of the original Naxxramas (Tier 3) raid in Vanilla WoW. All over Azeroth would be attacks by floating platforms spawning various types of undead that had to be attacked in groups for drops, tokens and various event-specific rare and epic items, including the brief return to availability of the Argent Crusade tabard.

It's a pretty vicious cycle..idk about WoW, but Rift you can play all the time..
The more you play the better soul points you get. The more soul points you get, the better aspects of your character you can unlock. Plus there is always pvping going on and even if you don't win you still get points for the some of the best gear in the game. Which takes a LOT of time. Dungeons get old after a while, but you also get currency to get you the second best gear in the game next to raiding. Raiding is done with your guild and sometimes can take a few hours a piece depending on the skill level of the guild. Then there are events to get more currency which gives you special items..
There's a lot to it..but the people that spend all day playing definitely have an upper advantage then the casual people.

That's understandable, and it can get out of hand with certain folks. But don't think of it in the same context as a game like GTA or Zelda or anything else that has a definite conclusion or predefined avenues of play. Gaming and competition is a big part of it but there's also an aspect of the game that's very much like this bulletin board. People hang out here all day, hoping to see something interesting, chatting with other people, etc. MMORPGs in a very real sense behave like bulletin boards with very elaborate interfaces...or bulletin boards like this one can be seen as MMORPGS with really bad lag.
Think about it. You have an alias. You have an avatar. You have friends, enemies, frenemies. There's a ranking system. Cliques. Competitions. The more involved "players" go to sometimes elaborate lengths to differentiate their presence in the system, which is persistent and always, ideally, giving the impression that something could change at any moment.
I could really give a crap about dragons and elves and all that. I never read fantasy books as a kid and, as far as I can remember, never played DnD or anything like it. In spite of all that I still get something out of it, reward for effort, etc. MMOs are really more like hobbies than games. Folks easily get obsessed with their hobbies...HAM radio...fishing...hunting...orienteering...online forums...whatever their thing is that they can time sink for some sense of enjoyment or escape or whatever. Judgement on the part of the observer is totally arbitrary.

The one bit that I really did like about the latest WoW expansion was the inclusion of the Worgen and the whole gothic, Victorian werewolf aesthetic. I wish there was a specifically horror-oriented MMO out there that had stuff like that, and the richly designed Undead lore and stuff from WoW, with all kinds of other stuff. I guess folks still play City of Heroes/City of Villains and stuff so smaller niche MMOs catering to horror fans would be cool.
I imagine the axe-murderer class being very popular and able to hold his own against the vamps and werewolves and witches, lol.

Ugh! Strongly thinking about reactivating my account. Not sure why! Every time I do, I play for a few days, get bored... and forget about the game for months. Gah dang!! :stare2:! This game is the worst kind of addiction. So much wasted time/money! If I do, I'll be doing a Server Transfer. Duskwood can suck on my wang.

Would actually be pretty badass to see something like that
I am pretty sure if done correctly WoH(world of horror, ya but a lot of thought into that) could bring in some serious money...gangs of zombies could raid gangs of seriel killers, clowns, vamps, weres etc.
:hmmm: i wonder....

The Rift trolls should start a Rift thread, so they can talk about their generic-but-slightly-more-pleasing-and-less-PD-3D-clipart-looking-than-EQ looking, clumsy-moving game in bliss.
Just sayin'.

The first half of this video is pre-Stormstrike, before Enhance could DW. But Enhance can still equip a 2H and still get wicked Windfury procs. It's always been a spec that's subject to RNG but now they can also Lava Burst and a few other tricks at range, not to mention those damned wolves. You can still find 2H Enhance fanatics though, having their fun.
In the "lowbie" ranks there's actually very little that's game changing compared with classic WoW. Even full heirloom gear doesn't come close to what real gear of equivalent minimum level brings to the table. There are some spells that didn't exist, some that you can't get this early and some that don't exist anymore but sub "end game" things aren't night and day different, except for leveling not taking near as long. Lowbie PvP is still fun as hell. Problem is, this expansion in particular, there's been very little World-PvP done or produced by the better players. Arena videos suck, for the most part.
Here's one not quite so old that's also a goodie...

Between then and now the biggest difference for Elemental-Shaman is Lightning Bolt can be cast while moving now via glyph, and the big yellow numbers are generally 2-4X as big now. Older PvP videos can still be useful and entertaining, but, here you go, here's some more current stuff...

...only recently into warriors myself, with a little alt at lvl49 now. Fun stuff being able to chain-kill three or four players in a BG as a tank. Here's one that I recently started following...he quit for a while to dick around in SWTOR I 'spose but is coming back I read.

More Elemental-Shaman fun. I forgot about the recent change that removed the cool-down on Chain Lightning. It's just sick.
