I'm in need of some more storage space so I'm looking into getting an external hard drive. Are there any brands people recommend getting, avoiding, etc?

No reason to buy anything other than Western Digital. Been buying their drives since the mid-90's and have never once had one fail on me.

I love my WD drive.
Now I have heard the 1TB My Books have software you need to install. the software actually stops well-known file types from being shared..

we purchased 3 300 GB WD drives for a little over $100 each at walmart about a month ago. Really nice drives.

The software isn't required. You just simply don't install it. The drive itself has no filtering capabilities.
Regardless, that's pretty lame of WD.

I heard there was a workaround, I didnt bother reading the article. I figured you didnt have to, although the way DRM is heading I wouldnt be surprised if you have to install the software for it to work.

Personally not a fan of WD. Got a WD external a while back, but returned it after it kept disappearing from my computer for some reason, despite being turned on and properly connected. Went with a Seagate brand, which is what I use for my internal drives anyway. Seagate has never done me wrong. Currently using two 500 gig eSATA external drives.

I heard of that problem. Some WD HDDs auto shutdown almost as if it goes into power saving mode. I use mine as a backup of files and such and have it off all the time and connect it when I need to transfer something.

That's what I've been doin' with my Seagates right now. Convenient and love the transfer speeds.

I've never bought Seagates because their prices seemed too high for no good reason but I think they do offer a 5 year warranty as opposed to the 3 years that WD offers.

you can also look to get a multimedia hard drive, I have been thinking about getting one of these myself.
