Good News is Peter Jackson is confirmed to return.
Bad News is that he won't be directing, just producing.
Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is set to produce a two-film adaptation of The Hobbit.
Jackson and New Line have been at each other's throats for years, with New Line at one point vowing to not let Jackson be involved with The Hobbit. Luckily for the fans now, the two sides have made up.
Jackson will be the executive producer of both films. No director has been selected yet. Both films will be shot together. The hope is to have the first film out in 2010 with the second film out in 2011.
"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle-earth."
The Hobbit is a prequel of sorts to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Frodo isnt in the 'Hobbit', the Hobbit is a simpler story. It's all about a group of Dwarves who are out to reclaim their kingdom and treasure which was stolen from them by the Dragon Smaug, While they are aided by Gandalf on this quest they also manage to snag a 13th member to their party, one Bilbo Baggins.
While the catalyst for LOTR is in this story, Bilbo finding the one ring, thats not the focus of the tale, it's all about the dwarves and their quest to regain their mountain of gold, their kingdom, and beating the shit out of the hoardes fo goblins that are after them.
The book does have a giant war at the end, between five armies which would be visually stunning if pulled off well. The hobbit occures about fifty years before the fellowship of the ring.
There are all kinds of monsters in this one, orcs, giant spiders, wargs, eagles(a whole army of them) and of course Smaug himself. Gollum is in the film as well, the scene between Gollum and Bilbo in th ebook was facinating.
Here's another tid bit for you gents.

I read this book in 10th grade and loved it, could never get into the trilogy though. Or the films based on them. Love that they're cutting this into two parts. Gotta milk that money out.

I read this in the third grade. It was fun then.
A movie version might do alright.

we'll see. Actually looks like the hobbit will be one film, the other film is a bridge between the hobbit and fellowship of the rings.
I"ll just stick to the film adaptation of the hobbit.

To be 100% honest with you. The Hobbit was the only book in the LOTR universe that I read and actually enjoyed.

I knew that...was just making a point that after three adaptations of "the rings" stories...I've had enough of hobbits.
I think you have it all wrong.
The good news is that he isn't directing and the bad news is that he's producing.
Jackson = Most overrated director ever.
You give me a trillion dollars, top notch actors, and a state-of-the-art production team and I'll give you three good movies about hobbits, too.
I can't stand how much credit that dude gets for these flicks when he had a production team and budget that ANY other director in Hollywood (sans Uwe Boll) could have worked well with.

I loved PJ's earlier stuff, and it's the only reason I picked up the book. The guy who made bad taste is making LOTR? I'll give it a shot. But the movies just bore me, and compared to other "epic " films they were slightly cheaper. That was one of the reasons for shooting back to back. Shit loads of money and State of the art FX don't equal a great film, for further proof check out Michael Bay's list of credits.

Fucking hobbits = more fucking hobbits...racist against hobbits?um..K.
Read the books. In the books the hobbits actually get more development.Initially in the first Book, Frodo is the only hobbit that really fights, until he's almost killed by the witch-king.
After that Merry, Pippin and Sam step up to plate over the course of the next 2 books and get more involved in war and actually become pretty good warriors.
