Is there an average number of processes that are supposed to be running? I have like 45 processes showing, is that a lot and is it bad?

Depends what you have running in your background. Anti-virus programs can take up to 10 or more. Device drivers and other system services take up quite a few.

46 isn't really that much if you have a few apps running. Wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you're getting sluggish performance.

yeah I got three programs, Adaware, Spybot and Windows Live onecare that came installed when I bought the computer. Lot of the processes dont even know what they mean. Had around 50, but I removed a lot of programs I never use and went down to about 45.

Yes, its normal to have around 38 to 50. I believe Vista has a default of I believe 44. Most Antivirus programs have 1 to 3 added to that. There is websites explaining what each does and programs that help as well. You can turn off punkbuster, itunes, apple, realplayer and whatever else is running you are not using at the time. Check descriptions.

You can always type the name of any processes into Google if they look suspicious.
