Im creating this forum as a chance for anyone to ask a healthcare professional any questions you may have, as some of you know im a hospital corpsman and i do frontline patient care for my provider day in and day out. I'm working on my BA in microbiology and im very knowledgable in the field of infectious diseases. I can answer questions regarding diet and nutrition as well as some special disease like diabetes and high cholesterol. If you have a question that I cannot answer I will be happy to ask one of my providers or research the question you have. This is your chance to get some info without having to make a doctors appointment with a provider who only cares about their rvu's rather than the quality of care the patient recieves. I do care so that why im here any questions?????

How do I cure this stye on my eyelid?

the most common treatment for a stye is applying a warm compress to the affected area two to three times a day until it is completely resolved. it usually takes a week for styes to completely heal up. styes are caused by staphlococcus bacteria if you notice it getting bigger or draining with pus then you want to get medical attention immediately so it does not turn into staphlococcus blephritis. the doctor will give you antibiotic ointment to relieve the stye. :hi:

please note that i don't have a provider to reach on saturday and sunday to speak with and if i don't readily get back to you about something you can email me at these two address: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. please remember that i am not an actual doctor i am a hospital corpsman which is the civilian equivalent to a nurse so any adivce i give can be dismissed if you have any doubt, i urge that if your condition is serious to please consult your primary care physician. Also i work with adults so some questions about children i will probably not be able to answer. If im not 100% sure about something I will give you some possibilities of what it could be and provide evidence to support this and tell you to see your doctor.

This is a mixture I usually mix up when I have this problem :

3/4 cup (160 grams) firmly packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

tempature has no effect on this at least there is no evidence to prove it nor anyone i have seen in the clinic has had success, however it is more likely that you will drink more water if it is cold because more people prefer cold water over room tempature. I know that i love cold water and i ll guzzle it down. water can help make you full and stop cravings that you have and is excellent for digestion so water is always the way to go when you are trying to lose weight.

Water is a necessity for weight loss because your metabolism comes to a stand still when you are dehydrated. Slow metabolism = less calories burned.

That is the only effect it has.

Yeah, I know water is important for many things its just that someone told me cold water is better because it forces the body to burn calories to produce heat to stabilize the body temp. Sounds good in theory but again, I also heard it takes very little energy for the body to regulate body temp

it can also fill you up if you drink enough of it and it is essential to digestion it can make things run more smoothly (if you know what i mean).

Yeah, I know water is important for many things its just that someone told me cold water is better because it forces the body to burn calories to produce heat to stabilize the body temp. Sounds good in theory but again, I also heard it takes very little energy for the body to regulate body temp

Consider how much mass your entire body is. It takes no effort at all to warm up a drink of that cold water. Same with cooling down a sip of hot coffee. It would seem to me you'd have to drink literally boatloads of water to burn up a handfull of calories. Therefore, it's most likely something not even worth considering seriously.

water can help make you full and stop cravings that you have and is excellent for digestion so water is always the way to go when you are trying to lose weight.

My 2 cents. Water doesn't make you full, but can make you feel full. But there's a problem there, and this all comes down to one thing. Knowing the difference between true hunger and appetite is the key. When you're hungry, eat. When hunger is satisfied (not stuffed to the point of being uncomfortable, or loosening the belt), stop eating. Also something that's very important to all of this -- eat the food you desire. Keep in mind, this is pertaining to weight loss, not necessarily long term health. But then, obesity is a major problem in the puzzle. That eliminates cravings and is a much better feeling than undereating or overeating, and the weight falls off and stays off.

I've come to learn after years of fluctuating weight, that learning how your body works is the key to losing weight. We wonder why hundreds of new diet books are written every year, yet we just get fatter. I highly recommend checking out a book called 'The Overfed Head: What If Everything You Knew About Weight Loss Was Wrong'. The guy who wrote it is no expert on anything. He's just a guy who dropped 140 pounds after realizing the insanity of dieting over and over again. All the diets and tricks .. low carb, high protein, low fat, low calorie, how much to eat, what to eat, what food combinations to eat, what exercizes to do, etc.

In the end, his point is that we give authority to others to tell us how to diet, and we ignore the simplicity of listening to our own bodies. Diets inevitably fail. When we feed our body when it's truely hungry with foods we want, crave, desire.. whatever, we don't go on ravenous binging episodes, which usually means overeating. It's so simple and common sense, and flies in the face of every supposed diet expert selling society fool's gold. Believe me, I've fallen for almost every trick in the book. I've gone up and down from the 200's to 170 to the 200s. Dieting is hard work to maintain in our everyday normal lives. Now I've never had an easier time keeping excess weight off. I excercise regularely, but the results only enhance, and are not the reason for the weight loss. Weight loss/nutrition/exercise are three individual components.

If you'd rather check out a book by a PH.D, then I'd recommend 'Diets Don't Work' buy Bob Schwartz. It's pretty much where the author of 'Overfed Head' realized his mistakes. When looking through all the mystery of weight loss out there, simple common sense is refreshing, but more importantly, understanding our relationship with food is eye opening.

Well, that's quite a rant. I just hate obesity because it's so unnecessary, and it's really an amazing thing when you just stop and listen to your own bodies signals. Everything we need to know is built right in there.

I've had this sharp pain in the left side of my throat for about 3 weeks, Its hard for me to swallow food. Thought I'd get some opinions on it before I go to the doctors.

Dr. WarBeast says:

Drink beer until the pain goes away... That's what I did last time I had a sore throat... I guzzled beer until I was too drunk to give a damn about my throat, then I pigged out on a big plate of spaghetti.

i bruise very easily. any ideas on why, and how do i avoid looking like an overripe banana after a night of heavy drinking?

Dr. WarBeast says:

There could many reasons for your current bruising condition... low platelet count, cancer, anemia... you could go to a doctor for it, but that would take a lot of expensive testing to find the cause and quite possibly the outcome could be rather depressing.

My advice is bit more practical... Before you begin a night of heavy drinking, wrap yourself in bubble-plastic and enjoy.

I grind my teeth at night, and sometimes cut the inside of my mouth and then wake up tasting blood. not lies. it doesn't taste good. what should i do?

Dr. WarBeast says:

This is very easy to treat... drink beer until you utterly pass out... I don't mean drink until you're very drunk and go to bed. I mean drink until you are passed out in the bathroom floor, with your tongue all dried out and stuck to the floor... you won't be grinding your teeth at all.

Dr. WarBeast says:

Get a case of beer and drink it. Find a total skank, then give her a quarter gram of meth. She'll work you ten ways to sundown, and if your pipes aren't cleared by then, you might as well just have them cut off...

... on a side note, don't be concerned about catching a disease from said skank... the alcohol you've consumed will act as a dissinfectant and kill whatever cooties the bitch has.

I would have to agree from personal experience that most programs and the conventional wisdom about weight loss is a bunch of horseshit. No carbs? Eat my ass please. Calorie counting? Damn near impossible. Drink water when you're hungry? I prefer water when I'm thirsty.

Too much promotion of gimmicks and short-term solutions that lead to failure. Your primary goal should NEVER, EVER be 'I would like to lose X amount of pounds by Y date on the calender'. That's looking at it the wrong way.

Good health is a lifelong process. Good tasting foods are essential to person's mental well-being. Depriving yourself of your favorite foods and trying to ignore hunger is setting yourself up to bomb, big time.

I lost 10 hard pounds by increasing my cardio workouts to 4-5 times a week as opposed to the 2 or 3 times I was doing and cutting a few corners on what I ate. That's it. I still eat like a son of a bitch. Ribs? Steak? Pizza? No problem whatsoever. But I've learned a lot about portion control and general sensibility. Instead of 5 pieces of pizza, pack it in at 3. Whole rack of babybacks? Wrong! Half is enough these days.

Whatever your approach, you have to ask yourself 'Can I do this the rest of my life ?'

FREE ADVICE FROM DR. WARBEAST:

Cure for the common cold:

If you have a cold or flu bug, flush your system with mass quantities of booze... as with the advice given to Choptop, alcohol is a dissinfectant and will kill those germs and once you get over the hangover, you'll be right as rain.

Worried about Cholesterol?

When you eat something with a shitload of cholesterol, follow it up with a lot of beer and really salty food.

The alcohol in the beer will thin your blood and the salty food will raise your blood pressure and blow that cholesterol on through before it has a chance to stick to anything.

I've lost 30 pounds and have maintained it, just by not gorging when I eat... no exercise or anything... just stopped eating constantly and stopped eating at my second helping instead of the fourth.

I came up with this when I hit 235 lbs... I noticed that I ate like a hog and never went over that weight.. it just stayed there.. so I cut back a little, next thing I know I'd dropped 10 pounds, so I cut back a little more, now I'm at 205. I don't spend my days hungry. If I feel the need for a snack, I eat a handful of chips, whereas I used to eat the whole bag.

Weight loss doesn't have to be a drastic lifestyle change... you just have to do something.

The alcohol factor is a very important aspect of your treatment that you can't remove...

There is, however, a very simple work-around to your condition. Instead of drinking a case of beer, get a fifth of Pure Grain Alcohol and a nice big syringe. Use the nice big syringe to inject the booze right into the side of your neck... that should do the trick.

Calorie counting? Damn near impossible.

And certainly one of the more ridiculous things to do. People seemed to do fine before food labels even existed. They really haven't even been around all that long, and don't seem to be helping matters much beyond sodium and sugar content, which is important to people with high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

on the shopping list) and hitting the gym 4-6 days a week. 40 lbs later, though, I can't say I'm sorry I did it.

Actually guys drinking more water does help you lose weight. While I agree with you that it can't take the place of eating food it does curb your appetite. Also it fills your stomach which doesn't allow you to eat as much during a sitting. When you eat drink three glasses of water instead of one, it helps you eat less.

When it comes down to it though losing weight is incredibly incredibly simple. Burn more calories then you ingest. If you do this you will lose weight.

I worked as a personal trainer for a number of years to support myself and it really was amazing how many people went to the gym for a miracle work out that would make then lose 20 pounds in a week. It just doesn't exist. Intensive various cardio added to dynamic(not static which is the key) weight training = results.

Also as far as diets go, just do what you think is right. Use common sense, if its a buck burger from a fastfood place its probably not a food you want to eat. Limit carbs and drink liquids.

As far as cold water burning calories, its not true. Like Scare said you would have to drink insane amounts of water to burn anything at all. However a little known fact is that when your working out its not good to drink ice cold water, room temperature water is more easily taken in by the body which allows you to be more hydrated during your workout.

this could be many different things. The first two that come to my mind are abcess and tonsilitis. Are you haveing any flu-like symptoms???? Have you had your tonsils removed??? these are all important questions. If you answered yes to question one you should see a doctor immediately because an abcess in the throat can be serious and can cause difficulty breathing. Tonsilitis can cause the same thing but it is more likely not to affect just one area. I hope its just a regular sore throat in your case.

I'm a med student's nightmare. You want to have some fun, try this:

--Mild cerebral palsy, focusing on muscule/nerve control/growth of right side of body. (multiple corrective surgeries on right leg and foot to allow walking, fun stuff)
--Slight scoliosis that causes cronic lower back pain.
--Arthritis in left knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist due to life-time of overuse from compensation to right limbs' limitation.
--Infrequent long and short term memory loss.
--Frequent spells of depression.
--Possible bi-polar behavior.

im no genius but i can give you the best advice i possibly can from information that i know ok here goes:

my supervisor frm my civilian job before i joined the military's son had cerebal palsy she took him to canda for treatment he began to show progress within two months. he is able to clap his hands and play on a computer now. seems canada is the way to go. I believe though the treatment may be experimental and may cost you a pretty penny. although this family was very poor.

scoliosis can be treated with surgery but they are often extremely painful and how show to cause problems later in life with the spine like disk degeneration, spinal fusion and height loss. left untreated you can develop spondylosis (arthritic symptoms in the spine) your pain could get worse and this can also happen whether you get treatment or not. I know the prognosis looks grim but keep your chin up the key is to relax yourself. when medical theraputics fail you can always soak in a tub of aroma therapy, see a massage therapist (i know thats for muscles but it can relax the muscles surrounding the spine and relieve tension). this link below can provide you with more information on scoliosis and the affects of it treated or untreated.

To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

arthritis is also usually treated with pain medication like motrin or codine.

memory loss can be caused by stress or a serious underlying condition if this effects your daily activities i would see my doctor if i were you.

depression is often treated with medication but spending time with love ones and focusing on hobbies you enjoy can reduce depression I understand from your medical problems why else you could be depressed, please note that you need to focus on what makes you happy rather than what makes you sad. i have met patients that felt like their whole world was crashing down, don't take it out on your self try to get involved with people whom care about you more often this will boost your mood i find that a strong connection between people can reduce the amount of stress and depression in one's life. if you feel that these modalities are not effected then i would advise that you consult your local psycologist.

bi polarism is not something that you can control on your own from my knowledge my mother has bi polar disorder this is very serious i recommend strongly to see a doctor concerning this issue. bi-polarism can cause relationship problems, if your job includes being actively invovled with customer relations it can disturb the working environment. this could also be a reason why you are depressed.

hope that helps :hi:

Already getting treated for most my stuff through Shriners Hospitals (good folks) and various military facilities (yea for free treatment). Was curiuos if you had alternative ideas to what has been tried. Never hurts to get another opinion after all, :mhehe:

It never fails to make me laugh when the docs walk in wave after wave of med students to look at my records and check me out. Extremely unique cases are great fun at med school apparently. :movies:

I'm a med student's nightmare. You want to have some fun, try this:

--Mild cerebral palsy, focusing on muscule/nerve control/growth of right side of body. (multiple corrective surgeries on right leg and foot to allow walking, fun stuff)
--Slight scoliosis that causes cronic lower back pain.
--Arthritis in left knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist due to life-time of overuse from compensation to right limbs' limitation.
--Infrequent long and short term memory loss.
--Frequent spells of depression.
--Possible bi-polar behavior.

I'm a nice guy, just fucked up from the floor up. So, what can I do to fix me up?:mhehe:

Okay... whatta list....

Dr. WarBeast says:

Mild cerebral palsy, focusing on muscule/nerve control/growth of right side of body. (multiple corrective surgeries on right leg and foot to allow walking, fun stuff) - I would recommend a slut and a case of beer, the theraputic value of this treatment is beyond measuring.

Slight scoliosis that causes cronic lower back pain. - Drink more Beer.

Arthritis in left knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist due to life-time of overuse from compensation to right limbs' limitation. - Vodka... yeah, that'll do the trick. It'll dull the pain and give you an excuse for walking all fucked up.

Infrequent long and short term memory loss - Drink a SHITLOAD of Beer... at least you'll have a good reason for not remembering shit.--Frequent spells of depression.

Possible bi-polar behavior - I prescribe two slabs of barbequed ribs... that'll fix any damn mental condition.

i have a thought provoking question: my boyfriend and i are not the best looking people 9some would say down right ugly). we have 2 kids both girls (one is mine, the other ours) they turned out pretty cute and we were wondering if we could try for another child? are the odds against us and will bring forth an abomination to the eyes such as ourselves? or can we have another cute one, because as my mother tells me, ugly people make cute kids?

this is all about genetics according to the punnett squares it is possible that your third or fourth child would be the one that does not recieve the good looks that your family have passed on from generation to generation. its really a 50/50 chance but don't base you having another child off looks otherwise don't have one at all because the kid may feel resentment towards his or her siblings because of this.

Do you know anything about steroid injections as a way of relief for burning arthritis pain? (in the back)

My mom sees a pain management specialist and is going through that procedure along with taking Lyrica. Any input?

My career is in the line of esthetics so I do myself a favor by trying to stay updated with new breathroughs in the business. The other day my mother gave me a home journal type magazine. While browsing through it I found an article on what sounds like is suppose to be the hottest thing since botox. It is linked to stem cells and research for burn victims. From what I could explain to my husband who understands the medical aspect of what the article described (works in the er as pct and is in school to be a murse), he said that its like eggs that have been uh fertilized by sperm? in labs like the zygote stage (before they start developing into babies) and making this into a topical cream for high prices (1600$ for 6 month supply). This is guaranteed to make a difference of a minimum of 5 years younger up to 20 years younger. Although for someone who has undergone horrible burns and scars I think to such extremes maybe you could consider this but personally for vanities sake I think it's kinda gross. I'm kinda of wondering whether it'd be more gross to put bochalism or butt fat in your face or pre baby cells? hmmm sexy

Have you seen an osteopathic physician yet? I'm a student at an osteopathic med school and I'm learning all about osteopathic manipulative medicine, which is an extra tool used to treat patients. It's used in instances of somatic dysfunction, where the body is not functioning as it should in certain areas.

What it essentially does is take the bones, ligaments, fascia and whatever from the wrong position and put it back in the right position. It's made for things such as scoliosis, or any kind of compensatory misalignment among other things. The osteopathic physicians that specialize in OMM really know their shit, so I'd advise that you check in with a DO to see if there's any more he/she can do for you.

make sure you don't touch your face and when you are sleeping make sure your pillow case is very clean so you can keep the wounds clean. you want to keep any possiblity of infection to zero. you may have some blistering in this case do not pop the blisters just leave them alone and make sure when you apply the aloe that your fingers are clean. aloe vera is not recommened for use on direct serious burns but if it does not cause you pain or irritate the wound then more power to ya!!!

burns almost always scar especially on such sensitive tissue but if you are like me and heal very quickly then you won't have to worry about scars for long. You can also apply vitamin E cream to the affected site to minimize the appearance of scars.

For some recent years my breathing has been weird. Every so often it'll seem like I breath in cigarette smoke. like if someone is smoking around me but not. It gets kind of hard to breath and I have to take deep breaths. What does that mean? I used to hang out with family all the time that smoked and I was always around that, but that was many years ago

you could have asthma induced by allergies (if you have allergies/ which even if you are not born with them you can develop them alter in life.)

Even though you are not around those family members whom smoke you could still suffer the effects caused by second hand smoking. there have been reported cases of people whom never smoked in there lives but contracted lung cancer due to being around people whom smoke because they inhaled the toxic fumes.

your symptoms sound like someone who suffers from being a borderline asthmatic. this means that you don't have full blown asthma where you have to use an inhaler because it life or death, but as borderline you can still have the difficulty breathing and feel like you have to breathe deeper.

the only way to know for sure is to talk to your doctor and get what is called a pulmonary function test or a methacholine challenge these are tests that are done by respiratory technicians to see if you have asthma.

even though you never suffered from childhood asthma you can still have it because it is triggered by other environmental factors.

me when I am around pollen or cigarette smoke I have a similar event to what you described. Its called allergy induced asthma. hope that helps good luck!!!!

well to be perfectly honest the first thing the doctor would ask you is. "Do you think that there is a possibilty that your pregnant???"" IF you are 100% sure that you are not pregnant then to me it sounds like the other notorious kind of flu (gastroenteritis) A.K.A the stomach flu. With the stomach flu you can feel nauseated, lightheaded, dizzy, fatigued, feel like you can't eat anything, and even have a fever. The headache could be caused by the fact that you may be dehydrated. Your body is signaling to you that you need more fluids. This can also make you dizzy and have the starving sensation because your body is craving water. Take some actual ibuprofen to make the headache stop, drink lots and lots of water this should help with some of the hunger pains and the dizziness (if its caused by lack of hydration) you have definately got to eat something. Try first munching on some saltine crackers they are easy on the stomach and won't make you sick. For now stay away from milk products and greasy foods. stick to soups and plain sandwhiches. (no fattning additives like mayo or spread) If your fever increases or you develop a chronic cough, congestion, pain in your face typically around the eyes and nose area, sore throat or begin having bad diahrrea and vomiting cosult your doctor. IF YOU DO IMPROVE SOME AND YOU DON'T get any of the symptoms mentioned before try to ride it out because with the stomach flu antibiotics will not work because its caused by a virus. it goes away on its own. but if you are like this for 5 days or more without improvement see your doctor. I don't want you to get hurt. please see your doctor if you continue to feel like this persistantly. hope that helps.

does it feel hot to the touch or appear a different color or is it painful???? this could be an skin infection. still have your tonsils??? do you smoke???? all of these questions are important because it could be an infection/or cancer....im not trying to scar you but i need some more details.

I'm just gonna say this, I do smoke weed (pretty often), I drink booze (but I don't drink to get absolutly trashed like blackingout, only blacked out once and that was on my 21st B-day), I've done coke and I won't do it again, Yea I've done acid a couple times but its too hard to get so I don't ever do it, last time I did it was like 3 years ago, Done shrooms, And sometimes I do pills (but don't really like mixin' them wit booze)... so yea I know its hard to believe, but I do know my limit, I'm not lookin' to be in a coma or dead.

got a question... I've taken acid a couple times before, and after the 1st time I took it I felt really different (not when I was on it duh, but after like a day or 2 after)... but Since i've taken it my vision has been kinda fucked, like sometimes I'll see shit that isn't there, like for me I always think I see spiders but they aren't there... I don't really know how to explain it... I JUST SEE SHIT THAT AREN'T THERE! don't know if there is anythin' I can do?

do you see tracers still too? fuck, i havent dropped in years and i still get the tracers when i am really tired or i just wake up. and some times if i start at the walls or the floor for too long i can see it breathe or something. does it get worse, or do you notice it more when you toke?

That would def throw you for a loop. If the spider spells anything in it's web then don't kill it cause you can make money off it.

Is having someone walk on your sore back really good for you?

ONLY if it's a cute little asian chick doing it... and she gives you a "happy ending" afterwards...

My ear was kind of ringing alittle last night, nothing bad, however this morning everything I hear sounds muffled or Bassy. I think I may be coming down with the flew - it's been drizzy and cold the last week or so. Also things sound louder then normal at times. Improved bassy hearing. I hope it's nothing big, I know hearing loss starts out this way but I am young so I have that going for me... I think... perhaps that doesn't matter.

its possible you could have an inner ear infection. if this is the case you may have some pain even drainage from your ear if this happens you want to see a medical provider. it can get seriously bad and cause a large boil inside your ear...this will def affect your hearing. its called otitis media....seriously if it gets worse seek help!!! right now take ibuprofen for any pain. DO NOT USE Q-TIPS!!! THIS IS A NO NO!! don't put even your finger in your ear all you are doing is introducing more bacteria. Make sure that if you get a fever or if you feel worse in five days to go seek help. on a lighter note did you know that earwax is called cerumen and its function is to keep bacteria and foreign bodies out of your ear??? think about that the next time you decide to sue a q-tip.

I've got this pain between my thighs, it kind of feels like a strain. I think I may need a massage. Can you help me figure this one out, Toxic? I'm worried that it may be an early sign of a monstrous erection.
