Had the misfortune to run into some serious computer issues in recent weeks (hence, my extended absence from these parts).
Long story short, I needed a new system and lacked the $$$ to go Mac and the patience to convert to open source and the best deal I had came with one major string attached: Vista.
I hadn't heard much that was complimentary, but any specific warnings, tips on things to watch out for, etc. would be welcome.

Not much of a computer wiz but heres what I have.
1. Disable UAC because its annoying as fuck.
2. For supposed 'improved' performance, change your color/display scheme from vista to classic XP.
3. Vista sucks
Not much else to say.

Application compatibility issues mostly. Wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're just a check e-mail/post on forums kind of guy then you should be kosher.
If you're a gamer/video editing/etc... power user then you could have some problems.
Personally...I'm sticking with XP for as long as possible. I've yet to hear of anything new in Vista that I would find useful and worth the upgrade.

I had a bunch of issues last year with Vista 32bit with incompatible printer, scanner, software, games, even driver issues with my sound and video card. I went back to XP for a bit then towards the end of the year back to Vista but this time 64bit. And everything was perfect.
Aero and such require more ram so I would advise 2gb. Just make sure everything is updated and you should be fine. Vista isn't as bad as people make it out to be now. As for performance. XP + DX 9 can give you an extra 4 to 9 frames per second more.
If you ever go to the main forums of tech gurus like tomshardware, overclockers, tweaks etc everyone is using Vista 64bit now. I'm spoiled with it already.

I'm running Vista 32 bit right now on my new computer and it isn't bad. It took me a couple of hours to get my fucking Half-Life 1 mods working. When in doubt if a program isn't running, "Run as Administrator" and switch compatibility mode to XP. I'm adjusting too it just fine but there are a few problems that make me want to punch Bill Gates in the fucking jaw.

I'll be sticking with XP for a few years yet, until all the bugs are out of Vista.

Same here, I'm happy with XP and I've heard nothing but gripes and problem from Vista users.
