It's all in the reflexes and state of consciousness. A sober person in a wreck tends to tighten up to brace for the impact, making muscles, tendons and bones more prone to injury. A drunk diver is more loose and not so quick to react therefor upon impact they tend to flop around. It sounds silly, but its actually the case.
