I remember watching them in the mid 80's on a 12" black and white I had in my room, when they were less than good to put it kindly.

I don't get how people can form that opinion when seeing an HD ad on standard television. Maybe because even though downconverted, it's still clearer. Kinda like how digital is better than analog, though the digital compression is pretty shitty.
