View Full Version : Breaking Bad: "Weeds'" Evil Twin?

The father on 'Malcolm' goes 'Bad'
"Breaking Bad" has cooked up this startling premise: A decent man decides to make and sell an evil drug, crystal methamphetamine.
He's a high school chemistry teacher who learns he has terminal cancer. He and his family already are barely scraping by. To leave his wife and kids provided for, he must put his chemistry know-how to a more lucrative purpose than lecturing to vacant teens. Cooking meth is deplorable. But it can mean big money, fast.
Not that viewers who catch the premiere episode (10 p.m. EST Sunday on AMC) will grasp right away what "Breaking Bad" is about. The opening scene is artfully bewildering: a frantic fellow in his underpants and a gas mask is barreling through New Mexico no-man's-land in a boxy motor home. Just one thing is immediately clear: Here is a show that will keep the viewer guessing.
Following last summer's ambitious, Golden Globes-winning drama "Mad Men," AMC has further upped the ante with its second dramatic series, taking even more chances. "Breaking Bad" dares to be bleak, heartbreaking, shocking and bitterly funny, hurtling its milquetoast hero into situations he couldn't have imagined.
It also took a gamble by casting, as the plagued Walter White, an actor best-known for playing the goofy, distracted dad on "Malcolm in the Middle" -- Bryan Cranston.
But from the first scene, Cranston proves he's made a thorough transformation, leaving any trace of Hal Wilkerson in the dust of Walter's fleeing mobile meth lab.
Inhabiting this new character wasn't hard, says Cranston. "Walter White is a guy who has very common flaws. To step into his shoes was a comfortable fit," he explains.
But there was more to being Walter than shoes.
"When I visualized him, I thought he should be colorless," says Cranston. "So we took out all the ruddiness in my face. I put a brown rinse in my hair, to take out the red highlights." He accessorized with glasses and a nerdy Ned Flanders mustache. "I went to the costume designer and said, 'I think everything he wears should be taupe and sand. I think this man should blend into the scenery.' "
Cranston also gained 15 pounds, to give Walter a doughy waistline. (For later episodes, he dropped the excess weight as Walter undergoes cancer treatment.)
"Here's a man," says Cranston, "who could have done a lot in his life: a high-six-figure income at a pharmaceutical firm of his choice. Maybe share in a Nobel prize. But he didn't reach for the brass ring, and he has lived a life of regret for 25 years. Then he gets the diagnosis.
"But the irony is, ever since he got that death threat, he's felt more alive than ever. He's fed up and ready to take charge. And given his set of dire circumstances, for him to use what he knows to do what he does -- it seems to make sense."
In an interview, the 51-year-old Cranston is hearty and outgoing, and exudes the satisfaction of an actor who works steadily. But long ago he moved beyond that mark of success. For one thing, he can boast a special status as one of the recurring kooks on "Seinfeld": dentist Tim Whatley.
Then he got the hit comedy "Malcolm," which wrapped in 2005 after seven seasons, leaving him in the grateful position "where you don't have to work for the sake of working, where you have the ability to say no."
He said an enthusiastic yes to "Breaking Bad." He had gotten a crack at the role by chance, he says, after appearing in a play in Los Angeles directed by "Seinfeld" chum Jason Alexander. That performance was seen by "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan, whom Cranston had met a decade earlier while guest-starring on "The X-Files," where Gilligan was a writer-producer.
Gilligan has surrounded his leading man with a fine supporting cast, including Anna Gunn ("Deadwood") as Walter's pregnant wife, Skylar; R.J. Mitte as their teenage son, Walter Jr., whose adolescence is further burdened by his cerebral palsy; and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, a recent washout from Walter's chemistry class who, now part of a meth ring, becomes his business partner.
Jesse and the man he still calls "Mr. White" quickly bond as a fractious odd couple, blundering through their caper with one cruel setback after another. Never does the series glamorize the drug trade -- or let Walter off the hook for his ill-advised venture.
"We're not looking for people to accept what Walter White is doing," says Cranston. "We're looking for them to understand."
For Cranston, the hardest thing to understand was the chemistry.
"I hadn't studied it since high school," he says with a laugh. "So I hung out with a chemistry professor to reacquaint myself with what a periodic table is, and an Erlenmeyer flask, and all that stuff."
Did he really learn to cook meth?
"Yeah, I did," says Cranston, looking surprised to admit it. "In fact, we had DEA chemists on our set as consultants. I wanted to be sure how a chemist would hold this beaker or measure that ingredient, and so we're going through the whole process. There is a specific way to go about it, and I did learn.
"But I've forgotten already," he hastily adds, "and I have absolutely no interest in repeating it."Sounds interesting, IMO; especially to see this guy's new character. Might have to check this one out.

Very good episode tonight. I knew right off the bat that the black dude was the person they were meeting up with, cuz he's a fairly recognizable actor. I like his character already, as he seems to be like a more business savy Heisenberg.
Not really into what's happening with Jesse and his girl. Figures that his character would eventually go down this route. I doubt his character would be killed off, but I can see that girl possibly getting killed off, especially after the threat she made in the preview of the next ep.

Well I expected more of a "bang" to come outta the finale. It was actually rather average if anything. No real action, but some interesting character development, especially with what's going on with Walt and Skyler.
Man, that plain crash really had us all fooled. Obviously we assumed that the bodies and doll in the pool and all that had to do with something Walt did, but then it turned out to be some almost random plain crash. Pretty crazy.
Looking forward to next season. Hopefully it doesn't take long to come out.

06-02-2009, 11:30 AM
Well technically speaking Fright Walt is kinda responsible for the plane crash because if he had turned Apology Girl over she wouldn't have choked on her own vomit. I was also hoping for more but I do like that they're keeping it real because you know Skylar would have walked out in real-life for sure. Fuck her anyway, Heisenberg needs a bad bitch whose down for the ride.:cooldude:

http://www.kormoon.com/2009/07/breaking-bad-season-3-news/
"“It’s going to be a real good day in the writers’ room,” says Breaking Bad executive producer Vince Gilligan, whose show just received a Best Drama Emmy nomination.
Season 3, which premieres in March, goes into production in August. So what can fans expect?
“We’re going to touch on an interesting real-life religion that is taking hold down in Mexico these days,” spills Gilligan. “It’s the cult of Santa Muerte, which is Saint Death. It’s a religious movement that worships the idea of death itself. We have a couple of characters who we meet in the midst of making a pilgrimage down to one of these saint’s shrines. These are a couple of bad guys who are going to cause all kinds of problems for Walter White [Bryan Cranston] down the road.”
Bryan, last year’s Best Actor winner and a current nominee, is directing the season premiere
and has already begun plotting the New Mexico shoot. “It’s bizarre and chilling,” he reports. “The first image you see in the opening teaser will be the Santa Muerte deity. We reveal ways
those who are devotees show their respect and worship.” Walter will also come to realize his culpability in the plane crash that ended last season “as well as his culpability in the failure of his marriage,” says Bryan.
Gilligan says fans will also see a more grown-up Jesse Pinkman, who challenges his father-figure, Walter. “The first few episodes of the new season are unbelievably insane,” says Aaron Paul (Jesse), who is celebrating his first Emmy nomination. And where was Bryan when he got the good news of his own nomination? “I was peeing at the time,” kids the actor. “It was a straight
pure stream, no obstructions at all. Unfortunately I was still in bed.”
As for the show’s famous fans, Gilligan plans to work some of them in as guest stars. Bryan tells me those who have expressed interest include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alec Baldwin, George Lopez and Terrence Howard. “Terence said, ‘I’d love to come play with you in the desert,’”

Skylar is an unbelievable cunt. I don't understand why Walt isn't taking his loot and boarding a plane to Vegas to enjoy the rest of his short life. I guess his crippled son is the best reason why he hasn't done anything more irrational. I can't wait to see how this shit plays out with the twins. Skylar is definitely a bitch and a character that I hated from the start of the series. I gotta agree that they need to move things along here, as stuff is happening really slow. Though it's still interesting to see the DEA guy becoming more obsessive and each step closer to the truth about Walt. :whew:

I think sooner or later he's gonna find out the truth.I'm guessing somewhere during the end of the season and probably even loose his job over this.So what's the deal with those dealers?Does everyone in that town know Walt is Heisenberg?

No just the Cartel/The Old mute guy in the wheelchair. He was present when Walt killed his nephew Tuco, who was trying to kidnap him (Walt) and Jesse with the intent to smuggle them across the border, presumably to set up a Superlab and kill them after he had them cook up a few pounds. His Lawyer and the Pollo guy who help him move the meth and Skylar the Supercunt are also in on the secret.
Hank (DEA guy) has a fuckin' loose screw. I don't know whats gonna happen when he finds out Walt is Hiesenberg. I bet he doesn't turn him in though.

I gotta agree about Hank, it seems that he may find out towards da end of the season that Walt is his man, but I too think he probably won't turn him in. I guess we'll see what happens :whew:

Yeah I know...but I was reffering to the dudes that Jesse sold his meth to and they gave him only half and the other half to Walt. That was my question....how did they find him?As I remeber they didn't deal with them before.

It's hard to just watch just one episode. Especially the way it always ends on cliffhangers.
SPOILER: The shootout between Hank and the Twins was one of the most suspenseful scenes I've watched on TV. He's a secondary character I really thought he gonna bite the dust.

I love how hank keeps using walt to help him spy on Gus  Was pretty interesting last week when we saw how Gus's backstory kind of mirrored Jesse's own. (He's the the busisness man, he's the cook) Still need to find out what his reputation is in chile. I don't think Jesse will be teaching the Cartel Walt's Formula. Gus has something up his sleeve, he wants revenge against the cartel for killing his friend.

Gus poisoning everybody and then a shoot out at the cartel mansion was epic. You can tell there's actual loyalty between Jesse, Mike and Gus now. I wonder how much time Mike and Gus have. looked like mike took a bullet to the chest and Gus is feeling some of the effects of the poison. Skyler telling her boss where the 600K really came from... :yfreaked: Now there's one more person that knows about Walt's business.

SPOILERS AHEAD -
Was mistaken about there being 2 eps left, as the finale aired already. Anyway, pretty good season. Not as much action as I had hoped, but a lot of interesting developments and revelations. Nice to see key storylines finally wrapped up at the end, and the way Gus went out was crazy! Although the Gus storyline "appears" to have been wrapped, there's still storylines to pursue...
For instance, we'll likely see the return of Mike next season since he was left in Mexico. Unlikely he'll seek revenge or anything over the death of Gus, but I'm sure he'll have a role in there somewhere.
Hank and the DEA still has some stuff to develop. Obviously Hank's suspicions have now been proven correct with the events that happened towards the end, so I'm curious how the DEA treats him now. I'm sure the feds will be snooping in on everything about Gus now and them catching on to Walt will be closer than ever.
I don't think things have wrapped with Skyler and that guy she gave money to. I think the last scene showed him twitching, so he has to still be alive and if he is, he'll prob return as well.
The very last scene of the finale revealed that it was Walt who poisoned the boy, which tells me that the series will likely finally come to an end with Walt and Jessie going at it (for real this time). It just proves how far gone Walt is and what he's capable of. Chances are something will happen that will push the boundaries of their friendship even more.
Either way, I've read that the writers have another 16-or-so episodes in their head and with how things ended with this season, I can see why. The next season will be the last and I'm hoping it'll be a crazy one. :whew:
