Okay, so I am making a short film for school, and part of the requirements are that all the any copyrighted music has to have the proper permission forms attatched when I turn everything in. The film will be completely non-profit, and likely will only be seen by the judges and a few classmates.

So does anyone know how I go about getting these rights? I've already attempted contacting a couple of bands via email. I don't know if I need to contact the band or their record label or what. Thanks.

I think you need to contact BMI or Ascap... i think those are the names.. and you can pay by song or by catalouge. Only way i know.

My guess is that this is a requirement to discourage you from using copywritten music in your film. The easiest way to score your film without having to deal with record labels and lawyers, or both, is to get someone to write original music for you.

It's not that hard to find a music student, or a local band, or even a guy with a casio or a guitar that can lay down a track or two.

That said.... check out this link I found this evening on accident:

Free MOBY music for indie-film. Won't that just freak out your friends.

Thanks ebosun, this is just perfect. I've also managed to create a bit of background music on garage band, so I assume I have the rights to whatever I made on that.

Wow the Moby site is really exactly what I am looking for.

The film I am making is a horror/thriller, so if any of you Moby fans could recommend some songs that might fit that tone, please list anything that comes to mind.

So far i've found 'Sighted' and 'Lenox'.

why does Moby have to be such a bitch?

"You acknowledge that Moby has his own moral values and as such he stresses that any musical synchronisation (use) to acts of animal harm, acts of violence or any sexual acts are strictly prohibited."

I guess since I'm making a g-rated monster short, it still falls into a category of violence.
