I'm looking to see if anyone has some suggestions as to who I should download/look into for some good Jazz music? I love Jazz (especially live at Jazz bars), but I'm a more of a casual fan; I don't know many good artists by name.

Any suggestions?

I grabbed some Dave Pike a while ago and enjoyed it. I think the disk was "Peligrosso."

I'm not a huge fan of the genre. At a guess it was really interesting when it was new, then got taken over by the sound-alikes within about two years of the first published recording. It seems to me that crowd has been in charge ever since.

Don't know a lot about jazz, but bass wise, listen to stuff by Stuart Hamm and Victor Wooten, two of the best jazz bassists around.

Victor Wooten is one of the best bassists period. Incredible sound, and the best part of Bela Fleck.

I'm not up to speed on modern day jazz artists, but I do have stacks of wax and CDs ranging from the 30's through the 70's. I lean towards the big band swing, beatnik, and bachelor pad stuff.

Without making a list that could go on and on, here's a little something on the unique side you might like. Dorothy Ashby/ jazz harpist. There's a bunch of flute in here too, and of course more on the mellow side. Of all the closer to standard jazz stuff I have, this is one towards the top of my favorites. Harp, one of the more underappreciated and intriguing instruments.

I like this one also a whole lot from '68, but it is more on the late 60's funky/ cocktail side. So not really standard here. Sure to impress some chics at the pad though.

Good to hear that there are some Vic Wooten fans on here. Dude is a bass GOD.

Have you ever heard is rendition of "Amazing Grace"? It's ridiculous.

I started to learn the song, but some of the harmonics are complete bitches to pull off. I learend the first few lines of Classical Thump and got completely lost because it's really hard to pull off the double thump technique. Overjoyed is nice to play though, it's one reason I learned to tap on bass.
