THE seven deadly sins have grown to at least 14 after the Vatican updated its 1400-year-old list of the worst moral failures to reflect the modern world.

The new deadly sins that may lead to eternal damnation are polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice, The Times newspaper has reported.

Quoting from Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, The Times reported that certain actions were so unholy that they needed to be deemed as “mortal sins” – not the less serious “venial sins”.

The man in charge of examining confessions and indulgences for the Vatican, Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, told the Vatican newspaper that priests should be aware of the “new” sins.

“New sins have appeared on the horizon of humanity as a corollary of the unstoppable process of globalisation,” Monsignor Girotti said.

“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbour’s wife – but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos.”

The other “new” mortal sins included taking or dealing drugs and causing poverty or the “excessive accumulation of wealth by a few”, Monsignor Girotti said.

According to the Catholic Church, “immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into Hell.”

The Times reported that Pope Gregory the Great listed the original seven deadly sins in the 6th Century.

Those were: Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth.

The new and improved 14 Deadly Sins (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23348818-2,00.html)

This was anounced earlier this week, but I didn't get around to posting it until today. So yeah, now there are seven more sins to the list. From another source that I've seen, these are it:

-Polluting (I guess that can make sense, but most everone pollutes with their vehicles, so I'm guessing everyone is doing some extra sinning for that.)
-Genetic Engineering (I guess I can see why that makes sense).
-Obscene riches (Now this one seems a little off to me. I mean, the Pope does run the city, and that seems pretty rich to me, but that's just what I think).
-Taking drugs (I guess this makes sense, but only depending on what drugs they talk about).
-Abortion (I do agree with this because I'm very against it)
-Pedophilia (Now, I know not all of them have done it, but it's about time for this one. It should have been a given, though)
-Causing social injustice (Though I am a person not afraid to state my opinion, I'm not going to touch this one, even though I guess it's not too much, I guess).

Unlike the one guy who recenlt decided it was a good idea to waste his time to explain to us what he thinks are the flaws in the Catholic religion, I'm not here to state my personal religious beliefs. However, I will say that I think some of these new ones are pretty dumb to me. Some of them are also kind of a branch off from the original 7. Some do make sense, but then the others are pretty off. Thankfully, I'm not Catholic, so I guess these don't apply to me

So yeah, remember, if you drive your car to church, be prepared to include that in confession. And, I'm sure you can all see this happening within at least the next two years; get ready for the sequel to Se7en. Have fun with these

The Vatican is calling "causing social injustice" a sin.

...

This is either coming 1400 years too late or is a last ditch attempt to look like they care about anyone. I'm placing my bet on the church's vanity.

Genetic Engenering...This has me remember how many evengelicals rejected Harry Potter and other Fantasy books because they where based on Witchcraft and magic. I wonder now if because of this sin that Science Fiction books will be rejected since I bet if you went to a Scifi section at a Library that most of the works would involve cloning in one way or another.

My take on 'em

-Polluting - Everytime I fart, I'm releasing methane... every time I exhale, I'm releasing CO2, WE ARE ALL DAMNED!!!

-Genetic Engineering - Yeah, because any course of study that might make your religion obsolete is a motherfucker of a threat to your wellbeing. Imagine a world that no longer fears death.... it would greatly diminish your hold on it, wouldn't it?

-Obscene riches - If you truly believe that, then welcome to hell, you obscenely wealthy vatican dwelling mother fuckers.

-Abortion - My personal view is irrelevent.. it is a person's choice, based on their own morality that's the issue.

-Pedophilia - So, what is "pedophilia"? In my country, (unless it's done by a catholic priest) it's anything under 17 or 18 years of age, depending on state and circumstance... but other countries, it's different.. so If you fuck a 16 year old in the USA, then run up to Canada where it's legal before you die, do you go to Hell?

-Causing social injustice - AAAAHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAA.... I'm at a loss for words!!!!

The Pope lecturing people on social injustice is reeeeeally hilarious. But oh well....he can go f'k himself.

Some bizarre additions, here, not to mention fuzzy language.

"Causing social injustice?"

"Carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments?"

You'd think a mortal sin would require something being more than "morally debatable."

Not really Grendel. Until the church has ruled one way or another, there's a debate.

After that, you don't debate the word of God.

I think that's how it'll be justified.

whew, I'm sure glad having hotties wearing boy shorts over for drinks wasn't on the list. Those prudes are closing in on all my favorite sins.

Not really Grendel. Until the church has ruled one way or another, there's a debate. That's what I mean: If they're calling it a mortal sin, then it's not "morally debatable;" they're flatly saying it's immoral.

The choice of language just makes no sense.
