Why are credit and debit card numbers kept on file at these stores? After the transaction is completed, why do they need to hold onto the numbers?

I already had to get a new debit card with all the T.J. Maxx bullshit that went down, and now I think I'll have to again with this Hannaford security breach. I shopped at Hannaford often when I lived in New Hampshire, so I'm sure my card was one of the millions that were compromised.

DON'T KEEP MY DAMN CARD NUMBER ON FILE!

Yeah, I know they need the number initially to complete the transaction. But why do they then store the numbers?

Ridiculous!I couldnt even think of a reason they would want to keep these on file.
I hate it when businesses mess with my Credit Card or Social Security numbers,Identity theft waiting to happen.

They do?
Your debit card can still be used for transactions without using the pin,I do it every day.

I worked at a store dunno if this helps... It's only a click of a button to go back and look at all the Credit Card numbers from that day. You can go in and refund money to those accounts, and even charge again cause all you need is the number.

We don't keep card info in our computer system, but where I work, the credit card reciepts that you sign have the number on them, and we are required to keep all signed reciepts on the store premises, locked away in the office.

99% of all Debit cards can be ran as credit cards which does not require a pin.

Yup, we have our card machine behind the counter where customers aren't allowed and it's a pain to pull it up so they can enter their pin, so we always just run it as credit and get their sig....Every now and then though for some reason it will only go through as debt....but typically thats only if it's a really really small town bank.
