It was fantastic: or at least the experience. I'm seeing it again tomorrow with my girlfriend, but this was the first movie I ever screamed in, and for that I cherish it, and I'll accept all the accusations of sheepishness or whatever lol, I should know by now that this probably isn't the crowd to reaveal that to, but goddamn it do I respect this movie.
But I agree with whatever review it was you read, Chief, the ending was total shit. Aside from that, definitely worth the ticket price (but again, maybe just for the whole scare experience, I'll be able to determine with a clearer head tomorrow as to whether or not it really stands strong as a movie w/out scares, but I'm guessing it won't). I'd recommend it to most people on this board; for some reason I don't think Cataclysm would like it.

The movie just wasn't scary. Everything in it had been done before. The best trailer of the year turned into the biggest turd of the year.
I prefer Them or Funny Games.
When they ripped off Texas Chainsaw Massacre with their little "based on true events" shtick at the beginning I was like :shakehead "here we go..."
My girlfriend liked it a lot. I was hoping for a lot more, I guess.

Yeah, I agree with the "true events" thing. Apparently when Bryan Bertino was a kid some woman knocked on his door and asked if "Tamara" was there, and when he said no she left and he later found out that people had been doing that in his neighborhood and if nobody answered the door they'd rob the house, and he said he used that as the root of the story and put in some Mansonesque stuff to blow it up.
But yeah, I definitely wouldn't say it was the biggest turd of the year: lest we forget Prom Night. I think it lived up to its trailer, really, and that was enough.

Well I got back from The Strangers tonight. I went in not expecting much so I was quite surprised by the quality of film. There a few too many jump scares which no longer seem to have an effect one me and just feel over done and cheap. However the atmosphere was amazing and costumes were fucking great. There were some generally creepy parts. I can honestly say this is the best horror movie of 08 so far. Thats not saying much. In the end it was a satisfying film, I would probably give it an 8/10.

The Strangers
By Halloween of 78
*THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS*
**1/2 of *****
The first time I watched the trailer for The Strangers, I felt like someone had finally filled the deflated lungs of horror with a blast of fresh air. Unfortunately, as promising as the scary masks, the mute killers, and the rural setting in The Strangers seemed to be, what the movie exceeded in originality it lacked with knowledge of what to do with it.
On the surface, The Strangers is hardly a detour from the basic horror movie recipe: a young couple, mysterious killers, screams, blood splats, unfortunate friends, sound-cued jumps, and unusable cell phones. But, despite those stale ingredients, what promised to make The Strangers original was its "true story" claim that went alongside its apparently amiable - though completely uncertain - killers.
That said, what ultimately scares you about The Strangers is the premise of the movie, not the actual content of the movie itself. Writer and Director Bryan Bertino certainly introduces the "what's unknown is scary" realm of fear with his story, but from there, past the oddly-familiar opening dialog, he doesn't seem as if he knows what to do with that premeditated fear. What ultimately serves as the demise for The Strangers is what made it relevant in the first place - great marketing. Think "Blair Witch Project," only not quite to the same extreme. A great idea generated interest, but The Strangers proves that sometimes an idea can deliver more than an actual story.
So, you may be asking, "OK, so what's actually happening in the movie?" Well, nothing really. Over the course of 90 minutes we see Liv Tyler running and screaming, Scott Speedman depressed, and, ultimately, both of them dead. Of course, we know from the aforementioned opening dialog that our heroine and hero would be killed, as the dialog spoils any suspense by immediately stating that what exactly happened on "the night of the crimes" was still not entirely known. Obviously, if someone had lived, what happened on the night of the crimes would have been known.
One final point - The Strangers' claim of being "based on a true story" can be taken one of two ways:
1) It is an extremely loose portrayal of the Manson Family murders.
2) It is a true story the same way the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a true story - the events seen actually happened...while they were being filmed, of course.
So what does that mean? It means The Strangers is a work of fiction. In this reviewer's mind, you need more than 5% accuracy (if you believed this was based on the Manson murders) in order to claim your story is based on true events. Under Bertino's definition of "true events," John Carpenter's Halloween could have been based on true events because surely at some point in American history a killer has worn a mask and killed a couple of people.
The Strangers is a nice popcorn flick with a couple of ordinary scares. If you have some extra cash and have seen enough of Harrison Ford, give The Strangers a watch. If not, keep watching the trailer - after all, it is the best part of the movie.

Dread Central brought up a good point
"To help further this trend, I’d like to point out (especially to the studios) that the last three PG-13 horror crapfests released (THE EYE, SHUTTER, and ONE MISSED CALL) ALL made Under $13 million in their opening weekend. That’s more than $7 million LESS than the R-rated STRANGERS. Are we bearing witness to the decline of tame/lame PG-13 horror? I believe so!"
I didn't know this was the directors debut movie. Pretty great for a debut director.

The acting by Liv and her onscreen boyfriend wasn't bad. The Strangers, though, how can you really consider that acting? They just walked around with masks on for the most part, said about 12 words between them the entire movie and only one of them is ever seen with her mask off.

Whatever you want to call what they did, acting, walking, hopping, or skipping, IMO it was done effectively. Believe it or not, there is a method to being scary just by the way you stand in a certain way/position...that's what I was talking about.

IMO it was not. No need to be condescending, I just totally disagree. You could have put just about anyone in those masks and it would not have made a difference.

Maybe if they did it 30 years ago I would have liked it better. I didn't notice anything particularly scary about them. And I think the reason Michael Myers was as scary as it was is because he was the first of the silent masked killers. Going back and watching the movie, he really didn't do anything that just about any other professional could not have done.

I'm sure there are a lot of people with the right body size and type. And how hard is it to learn how to walk a certain way.
Tilting his head on cue? Wow, I'm stunned he didn't win an Oscar for that one!
Come on guy, this isn't Pacino as Michael Corleone or DeNiro as Travis Bickle or even Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface.
It's a tall guy in a mask who tilts his head a couple times at the right part. He did a fine job for what he was supposed to do, but he didn't make or break the film. And chances are there were hundreds of actors out there who could have done what he did and the film likely would have been just as good.

I think Carpenter was the biggest difference. I think you are reaching a bit to try and justify the point you attempted to make. The men who played Michael Myers did not make or break any of the Halloween movies. That had more to do with the scripts and various directors, imho.
Each film after the first (the second one was pretty good, too) were just not good films. If Moran had played Michael in all of them, would they suddenly have been good? I think not.

Went to this Wednesday night. Went with two girls and they screamed/jumped at every "scare". God, I love going to horror movies with females.
Before the movie was almost over, some girl all curled up in her seat in front of us was like "THIS IS A TRUE STORY?!??!".
Overall, A good film. The use of the "loud noises" were overdone, but the movie was pretty sweet.
If I were one of the two people, I would have hid somewhere GOOD inside the house, where I couldn't be found. Or take off running DEEP into the woods. Not just hide down like the guy did.
The movie's atmosphere was pretty creepy. There's TONS of houses like that in my state, just sitting there, alone, on the side of the road, or elsewhere. So this shit could happen anywhere.
A thing I loved about the movie was that The 'Strangers' weren't really explained and we didn't know why they did what they did. ABOUT TIME we get some bad ass killers with no explanation why they do it. Let's just hope we don't get a prequel about these three growing up!
A thing i HATED about the movie? MISSING SCENE!!!! I won't spoil, but in the Yellow-Band trailer (And I think one of the movie posters) someone (won't say) is shown crawling on the floor. WE DON'T SEE THIS!!!! I was waiting to see this scene! Because it seemed sweet! But sadly, we didn't get it!
SPOILER:
The ending was sweet too! No, not the scream. The part where they get away.
"Why are you doing this to us?"
"Because you were home."
LOVE THAT LINE.

Me too. Usually I can't predict my own ratings, but I could tell from the trailers that this would be a 7

way too many clichés for my liking, but at the same time i did enjoy the stress of the situation.

I think that they could have done a lot more with this movie. I was really expecting more of the 'boo' scares. The scares that was in the movie was very predictable. I didnt care for this movie too much.

Eh. It was just the same thing over and over again through the whole movie. There were some really good scenes but as a whole I wasn't really left with anything after I watched it. I really liked the last 10 minutes. Not so much the last 10 seconds.

Really did like this movie, creepy unknown characters, nice share or gore and a 70s feel. 8/10

Have been waiting for this flick for ages (just came out here in Oz)
A very decent flick yet somewhat dissapointing.
The potential was there!
Really liked Liv Tyler and the Strangers performance and there were some great moments of tension but...
As usual some of the best parts were revealed inthe trailer (or not in the flick at all).
Not really sure I bought Speedman as the male lead and there was WAY too much exposition. I know it's meant to make us relate to the character's but come on...
My one major gripe is with some directorial choices.
!!!!!! SPOILERS !!!!!!
When day breaks and it was obvious how things would unfold i would have preffered a complete cut away from the stabbings. Speedman's weren't that convincing and the mind can always create something more horrific than hollywood can show
!!!!! END SPOLERS !!!!!!!
So although certain aspects were a bit dissapointing I'm still glad I saw it as it was an entertaining little flick that had the potential to be brilliant

Just watched it today. Boring, predictable, dumb characters, cliched, etc...
Forgettable in pretty much every aspect.

I can't believe so many peeps here liked this. I thought it was absolutely horrible, characters were dull and boring. The first 20 minutes almost put me to sleep,as a matter of fact the next time I can't fall asleep I'll put this movie on and I'll be out like a light:thumbsdown::negative::thumbsdown::negative:
