View Full Version : If they could convince him, you know who'd make a great Freddy?

With all this talk of a new NOES coming out (a remake, I guess), wouldn't it be great if they could get Depp to pay homage to the movie that started his career? Image what a talent like him could do with the character. He looks the role and certainly has the ability to pull it off while still infusing some freshness into the character.
I know the chances are about .00000001/1,000,000, but if those odds could stand (to quote Lloyd Christmas) "So you're telling me there's a chance! Yes!"
This is, of course, assuming RE doesn't play him again.
Just would like to see what you mofos think about the idea, as unrealistic as it is.

Yeah, sure. I'm a fan of Johnny Depp. He'd make it vicious yet enticing. But sadly, the chances are...none.

I don't see it. If he did become the new Freddy I'd call him Captain Jack Krueger or something smart-ass like that.

Billy Zane would be my choice.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense...i'd prefer Robert Englund though.

Depp would sure make the movie huge.
A young Christopher Walken would be my choice after Englund though.

Depp has apparently enjoyed the movies to the point that he made a cameo in Freddy's Dead. The next part may be rumor -- I forgot where I heard it -- but I recall Depp wishing he could have been part of New Nightmare as a brief cameo as well.
Him doing Freddy? Maybe not. He does seem to still have some good feelings regarding the franchise, however.

omg Christopher Walken as freddy... That would be funny as hell.

If amazing versatility means overrated, then yes.
Depp is one of the few 'stars' in Hollywood that I think actually deserves every bit of credit he's garnered, and maybe more.

Would be an interesting casting choice, but it gives too much incentive to have the character talk as much as possible. I found him more effective when he doesn't.

Sad to say this is one of those roles that if they cannot get the original, they should just let the project die. Its not like Jason or something where the difference is noticable to only the diehard horror community. Freddy is only one person and anyone trying to fill the sweater will not fill it out right. But thats just my opinion...

To answer the overall question. Yes, I think Depp could make a good Freddy.
To answer another question on here. Yes indeed he wished to be part of a New Nightmare but Craven feeling at the time that Depp was too huge of a star, he got cold feet and decided not to ask him. Later on, Depp told him he would've enjoyed being in New Nightmare in some capacity.
This from Craven himself on the DVD commentary for New Nightmare in the Nightmare Box set released years ago.
So of course I think he a could make a good Freddy. On the other hand, I doubt Warner Bros/New Line/Platinum Dunes most likely wouldnt want to offer nor pay him the price required.

Side note...
It would be rather odd that someone Freddy killed in a prior movie would take over the role. Depp had his time on Elm street, he died well. Would be too weird to see him there again.

That post is way too sentimental for a B horror franchise.

Wasn't meant to be. Just think it would be weird that a guy that was killed earlier in the series plays the killer years later. Doesn't look right.

Yeah I think Johnny would make a good Freddy. I agree with Dark Joker that Billy Zane would work too. Sadly we don't see enough of Billy. I think he's great. I'd like to see him and Johnny both play some hardcore evil horror villains. Depp proved he can do it with Sweeney Todd.

Ever since watching Zane in Demon Knight I have thought he would make the perfect Freddy.

I actually never thought of him to fill the sweater and take up the glove - but if he did, I would definitely go see the movie. I don't agree that there would be incentive to have the character talk as much as possible just because Depp starred as him either - because Depp makes many of the choices regarding how the character is portrayed on screen, and I think he'd want to bring back the darker Freddy, but that's just me. Sadly, I doubt the studios will ask, and they'll just cast some baffoon who has no respect for the character at all. :dsp:

Kruger = Englund. No one else can do the role, period.

Yeah, he'd do well, but he can't be much younger than Englund, so I doubt he'd take the role.
