During a live chat on Weta's website, producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro spoke out about the schedule for The Hobbit and its untitled sequel.

"At this point in time the plan is to write [the screenplays] for the rest of this year and start early conceptual designs. 2009 will be dedicated to pre-production on both movies and 2010 will be the year we shoot both films back to back," Jackson told fans. "Post production follows one film at a time with The Hobbit being released December 2011, and (Film Two) release Dec 2012. That is the schedule in about as much detail as we have ourselves at the moment."

Del Toro said the ratings for the two Hobbit movies would be the same as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, "an intense PG-13."

Del Toro also added this about casting: "No casting has started yet ... but some people have thrown their helmet into the ring."

Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), and Andy Serkis (Gollum) are all expected to reprise their roles in one or both of the films.

It does kind of bums me out to have to wait 3/4 years to see this series finally continue, but in all honesty it's actully better since the more time they have, the more likely it will be that it won't be rushed together and suck.

Update! Seems not everyone wants the prequels made...and they actully have a good reason.

The 83 year old son of Lord of the Rings creator J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. and is attempting to stop the studio from making The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy also created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Christopher claims that his family is still owed $150 million from their original deal with New Line Cinema in which they were promised 7.5% of the profits from the Lord of the Rings films. New Line has since gone under, and Warner Bros. has no comment on the financial matter.

The Hobbit is set to be released in December of 2010, but the next court hearing will be on June 6th, when Tolkien will petition a California judge to terminate the film rights.
