View Full Version : The Longest Movie to Ever Keep Your Attention Throughout

I was exposed to Paul Thomas Anderson a few weeks ago and watched Boogie Nights and Magnolia in quick succession, and having seen the 2 1/2 hour Sex and the City movie yesterday, I've come to the conclusion that it's an immense and incredibly rare talent for a filmmaker to be able to dance around the three-hour mark of a movie and keep the audience entertained the whole time. Boogie Nights and Magnolia are, I think, masterpieces of the nineties that were both able to do this. I'd say Gangs of New York and The Departed did the same, as well as The Green Mile.

So what are some long ass movies that you didn't feel a moment of boredom in? I was gonna post this in Horror Talk, but I realized most horror movies hardly break the two-hour mark...

Grindhouse was what, 3 1/2 hours? I didn't even go to the bathroom that whole movie I was so into it. But I think the longest NON-horror movie to keep my attention without boredom would be Terry Gilliam's ultimate cut of "Brazil."

Braveheart, Aliens Directors Cut, and The Departed come to mind. If you want to touch on the "tv miniseries" type films... I'll toss in Rose Red and the recent Andromeda Strain remake as well.

There's been quite a few: Braveheart, Inland Empire, the 3 Lord of the Rings films, The Departed, Grindhouse, Schindler's List

Well if you know anything about David Lynch, you'd know that his films are some of the strangest. Of course, this film is not excluded from this. I'd say out of the ones I've seen from the guy, this is one of the most confusing I've seen and also the longest (clocking in at 3 hours). It took me a few watches to figure some of it out. My recommendation is to find a stream or at least rent this first before purchasing. If you can figure out the story and tolerate all the weird scenes, then you will enjoy it. Otherwise, it's gonna be a long 3 hours.

*EDIT*
The story reminded me of his previous film, Mulholland Dr.

I don't have a problem with movies keeping my attention. If I feel like I'm starting to drift away, I'll hit the pause button and walk away for a few minutes.

Ditto, but I was getting pretty antsy towards the end, there were like four or five scenes in the last half hour where I was convinced it was about to end. And then the actual ending was, IMO, pretty terrible.
