Okay, so some movies use this or something similar to it. Take The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and The Strangers for example.
Okay, so does that mean TCM: The Beginning and The Strangers upcoming sequel will be based on true events too?
I think it's lame when they use "based on..." for the first and simply avoid it for the second. :dsp:

Not that it matters since most intelligent folk don't even acknowledge the 'based on true events' angle anyways.

If you want to get technical, any movie can have the "based on true events" line tacked on to it. Most movies usually stand on their own without stooping down to that level.

"Based on" means that a news story inspired the movie. In the the case of TCM, it was Ed Gein. Ed also inspired Psycho. I want to think there is also a third big horror movie that his story was behind -- Clive Barker's A-Z of Horror really goes into detail about this.
But anyway, the movie they made was already very far removed from the actual events. They can do whatever they want now as long as the core -- an identity-confused murderer -- was still intact.
There's going to be a Strangers sequel? :eek1:

You're thinking of Deranged. TCM, Psycho and Deranged are the big 3 (if you will) that were inspired by Ed Gein. Deranged of course, being the closest to the actual Ed Gein story.
There are other flicks like 'Don't Go In The House' that were also inspired by Gein but that is neither here nor there.

strangers was 'based' on Charlie Manson's home invasions.
the sequel, if 'based' on true events would be a court room drama.

Based on is just a gimmick to hook folks in. They hear it was based on true events then have to go google it find out what it was basically based on go wow that's insane can't wait to see how they re-enact it in the movie and fork over their 9 bucks. Once they have you hooked then there is no need for the based on gimmick since they know you'll be back to see the sequel or prequel.

Never sure if "based on true events" is supposed to be a selling point or a bit of CYA so they don't get called out as plagiarist douchebags...

If the first film was based on true events the sequel would be based on even truer events. Jeez, get with the program!
