Figured I'd pop this forums cherry with this little gem of a movie...

Many things have been said about this movie from being repulsive, beautiful, haunting , disturbing and unforgettable. I agree with all the terms I've listed above, I will never forget the movie that is Salo. To me it's a movie that cannot be rated because I didn't enjoy nor did I not enjoy it.

A few months ago isn't a long time, but whether you talked about a movie before or not. Bring it back up in here, keep this place alive and going.

For Salo itself, thought it was one of most boring movies I've ever seen and didn't really deliver the message about fascism but I saw this years ago and by the time I finally did see it, the hype I bought into, kept me from enjoying it. I'll pick up the Criterion re-release and give it another go now that I know what to expect instead of people just hyping the shit out of it.

:shakes: Only thing I thought was beautiful about the film was the language, rest is just fucked up, final 10 minutes were great.

Need to watch it again.

Unless I buy the cheap swedish edition, I will buy the re-release.

Bought this baby on e-Bay. I agree with Slayer when he says he can not rate this movie. I felt it was beautifully done, but it was sick as hell.

I was never bored, in fact I was disturbed by the whole concept of the movie.

I plan on watching it sometime soon. I've just been putting it off because the whole concept is just sick. I expect it to be the most disturbing film I've seen yet.

One movie that I haven't seen but have been meaning to see. I'll give it a watch and if I like it, I'll purchase the re-release within a few months.

If butt-fucking and shit-feasts are your bag, then this be the movie for you.

... I thought the movie was boring and had an unsatisfying ending.... as for the so-called "shocking" parts, I've seen far more disturbing fare and much better done as well.

I have yet to see this, but with all of the mixed reviews I think I may have to see it for myself!

I like the underlying idea of this film, but it's a little slow and by now, less shocking than it may have once been.

Still one watch is at least required.

If I may bump this thread from a few days ago...

I was thoroughly fascinated by this film before, during, and for a very short, time after I saw it. It was the most extreme thing I had seen in terms of shear fuckedupedness and it was about the time I started getting into horror movies (which was just before I joined this forum, hence, my username).

From the perspective of an art film, I thought it was awesome. As a horror flick, it's fucking terrible. It's not scary, the bad guys aren't menacing, and there's far more gore in Braveheart!

That said, I definitely agree it's worth a watch, though mostly just to say you've seen it. I'm pretty sure it has a decent amount film-making merit too, but I don't know enough about that to comment about that.

Oh, and the book on which it was based, makes the film look demure. That, I don't recommend.

Do you guys recommend tracking down the Criterion edition, or the most recent release of it?

**nevermind, looks like it's just a re-release of the last criterion edition**

^^ I'm going to pick up, I think. I want to see the interviews in the special features just to see what those involved with the film have to say for themselves.

I'm in film school and a few people pretentiously speak highly of Passolini, because they saw one or read of his films.

I only know of this film cause people would pay buckets of cash for bootlegss and the shit eating.

I've seen his film Porcile and it bored me to tears.

I'm about as big a "fan" of Salo as I could imagine myself being, but it's a rather hard film to sit through very often. Haven't seen any of Pasolini's other work, but I really liked what he did with Salo. It's a beautiful film about absolutely horrible things. It definitely warrants its reputation in my opinion, and still stands up as both a solid shocker and a very well made art film.
