 to the Book Section coming back.

Now, I figure why not start a thread of one of my favorite Book Series, Fank Herbert's "Dune Saga."

Currently, I've read 5 of 6 of the orrigenal series, the first part of the final one (Chapterhouse: Dune) and the first part of the prequel series his son started, Butlerian Jihad. Anyone else read these books and are fans?

I tried reading the dune saga back in middle-school and put it down.. it just didn't appeal to me then. I've been meaning to pick it back up again, now that I'm a full-on adult, but just haven't gotten around to it.

I keep thinking about writing a spoof of Dune... the only thing that I've concretely come up with so far is spoofing the Bene Gesserit... I thought of the Benen Jerryet... something to do with mental power over icecream or something... booze has a lot to do with this... please bear with me...

DUNE is one of the greatest books ever written..in any genre. I'd say give it another go WB. I think you'll find it's politics engrossing. To me, it's just as important to read as say 1984.

The parallels between this book and the conflict in the middle east are frightening.

As for the series, I've only read the first three. I have the next two sitting on my shelf, but have yet to dig in.

That's what I've been Noticing recently. Seeing how Saudia Arabia is making the world bleed since they controll the largest ammount of Fuel that's drilled, it fits well with the saying used in the movie: "He who controlls the Spice, controlls the Universe."

I heard as the series progresses the quality drops tremendously. I'm probably going to pick up the first one and read it sometime this summer though.

Granted the sequels arn't as great as the orrigenal, but I wouldn't say they drop like that. The first 2 Sequels are easy to fallow since they pretty much continue a number of years apart in story line. It's the third and fourth Sequels that get tricky, since they literally span over thousands of years apart in story line.

The time line goes I believe like this: Dune - Dune Messiah is 9 years apart, Dune Messiah - Children of Dune is 11 years apart, Children of Dune - God Emperor of Dune is 3,500 years apart, God Emperor of Dune - Heretics of Dune is something like 2,500 years apart and finally Heretics of Dune - Chapterhouse Dune is kind of tricky since CD pretty much spans over several years in the fist few chapters alone, but it does continue where the last book left off.

I'll read the first three atleast if I like the first one of course.

I've read the first, have the second and third of the original trilogy and need to start reading them. Great book with lots of political insight.
