As I sit here with insomnia at 2:20 A.M. Eastern Time, I've been contemplating about Blu Ray. I've heard many great things about it, but I have a question. I have a Sony, Bravia flat screen television, HD ready. So, do I have to buy the Sony Blu Ray player, or can I buy any old player? And which is the best one to buy?

I'm not really sure what's the best blu-ray player out there, but I know the PS3 is a pretty good choice. Not only does it play games, but you can download updates for it quick and easy.

Correct, any bluray player will work fine. Like fright said, your best bet is to go with a PS3. The 40gb PS3 is 399, wich as far as I know is pretty close to, if not the cheapest bluray player available. I also suggest picking up an HDMI cable to get the best picture quality out of the PS3.

I'd just go with getting a PS3 it's probably the cheapest Blu-ray player that i know of that's out there. Also you have the choice to play games on it later on if you choose too.

All my friends got the PS3 and love it. That might be a possibility unless something else interests me.

Yes... PS3 is the best bet for Blu-ray players. Consider price, free software updates via playstation network, and multi-purpose as a gaming platform... there is not much that could come close to it. If you make sure you get one with backward capability, the option to play PS 1 and 2 games makes it an even better deal.

But, if the games do not interest you its still nearly the cheapest blu-ray player on the market and the free software updates balances out any small price difference I have seen from competing blu-ray systems.

I believe the 20gb PS3 can't play PS1 and PS2 games. Just something to keep in mind if thats something you plan on using the PS3 for.

Right, always check the box for the backward capability before buying a PS3 if you are after it. Not every version has it. Lots of people get stuck that way.

Ill hold off on bluray. You an purchase an upscaling DVD player with an HDMI cable and it will upscale your DVDs to look near HD quality. Those run $40 at walmart, and its region free.

If you are serious about BR, purchase the PS3. There are two types of players right now, version 1 and version 2. Version 2 can be upgraded to later firmwares, thus more newer titles will be able to play on the device. PS3 is V2 so it wont be obsolete anytime soon! and you get what everyone else mentioned.

I personally wouldn't recommend an upscale DVD player, especially if you expect to get a blu-ray player in the future. The upscaled players usually don't do a very good job, and blu-ray players do it anyway, so you might as well save up to get one.
