Robert was behind two fairly important series of novels in the fantasy arena. His Myth Adventures (http://www.amazon.com/Robert-Asprins-Myth-Adventures/dp/1592221114) books were comedy gold for pen & paper gamers and fantasy fans. The series was consistently full of bad puns and outlandish situations which kept the entire genre on its toes.

On a more serious angle, he authored and/or co-authored the more serious Thieves' World (http://www.amazon.com/Thieves-World-1/dp/0441805914/ref=pd_sim_b_2) series. These books had a great effect on hobbyists and gamers during their popularity.

Sadly, he passed away on May 22. This hit me a lot harder than Robert Jordan's passing.

Any other people in UHM's hardcore nerd population ever read his stuff?

nerdish as I am, I am unfamiliar with his work... still mourning over Robert Jordan though..

I'll definitely check out Aspin's work... if it's damn good fantasy literature, I'm all about it.

Could you give me a book to start with?

The series that you're most likely to find is the Myth Adventures. It's comedic, but kind of a staple among us old D&D types.

If you want his more serious stuff then you'll have to dig up a used copy of Thieves' World.

The first post actually links to the first books of each series. He was one of the inspirations behind more of my recent writing.

the myth series was a lot of fun, but I stopped reading after 'the sweet mythtery of life'. didn't like it.
