I read the short-story Bubba Ho Tep and thought it was amusing, so I thought I'd give some of the author's other work a read... I picked up a book of his short stories, and it was FUCKED UP!!! The stories ranged from sheer genius to what-the-fuck was THAT?
After reading a collection of his short-stories, it became obvious that Lansdale likes to shock his readers, sometimes to the point of it being annoying. It's like he is thinking "Okay, what's gonna offend the most readers... a kid with his eyes gouged out? or perhaps a gutting a dog... hmmm... I'll use BOTH!!!"
Whatever the case may be, the majority of the stories I read were enjoyable and I'm thinking of picking up an actual novel by him... just don't know which one yet.
Anybody else read this weird fucker's work?

alot of lansdale is hard to find. i usually get lucky at local used bookstores here and there but alot of places dont carry his stuff or its out of print. i have and read the bottoms, lost echoes, freezer burn, cold in july,at the drive in (only horror i have of him) high cotten (short stories), and a couple of the hap and leonard series mucho mojo and two bear mambo. not sure if i have bad chili or not. lansdales all over the place as far as writing goes. i havent read a full novel that was strictly horror. most of the novels i do have are mostly mystery.lansdale uses alot of racism in his novels. he is a very good author and the only problem with him is after you read him you just kinda have a taste in your mouth for more. not to say his novels are incomplete you just want them to continue if that makes sense. as far as shorts go ive read everything from westerns (which he also writes novels of), to horror, to just funny as hell (one story of godzilla in a 12 step program was great). they also made alot of his shorts into comics not sure what publisher dc/ vertigo maybe? also incident on and off a mountain road was one of his shorts that is in high cotten its very much like the masters of horror episode.

Naked Lunch is the most fucked up book I've ever read...had some seriously messed up stuff in it. I might check this guy out though. I'm rereading Choke by Chuck Palahniuk right now to get ready for the movie.

If you want something really fucked up read Crooked Little Vein. For something strange, thought provoking, disgusting, and random try Gravity's Rainbow. Choke is a really good according to my brother but I haven't read it yet.
