Blood of the Beasts (Le Sang des bêtes)

An early example of ultra-realism, this movie contrasts the quiet, bucolic life in the outskirts of Paris with the harsh, gory conditions inside the nearby slaughterhouses. Describes the fate of the animals and that of the workers in graphic detail.

Cataclysm thought I should post my thoughts about this documentary from 1949, by Georges Franju. I don't really know what to say, but here goes...

First of all, remember that this is NOT a documentary that tries to turn people into vegetarians.

The documentary is very beautiful made, if that can be said about a film showing horses, sheep, cows and veals getting killed, but it's true, it's beautiful.
Everyone should see this, and I wouldn't even argue if this was shown in schools (okay, film classes atleast).
This is one of the most disturbing things I've seen. I even shaked my head at times, wondering what the hell I was doing watching it. Isn't it odd that this documentary, that is so disturbing, is just showing peoples day at work? That's what it is, and you really notice how it really is JUST a job for them, when the workers whistle and smoke during the whole thing.
It's amazing how much reality scares people.

Not sure what else to say, it made me speechless. I just hope this makes someone wanna see it.

You can find it on the DVD for "Eyes Without A Face", and I think it's uploaded on Youtube.

Go Meta! It's your birthday we gonna party likes its your birthday! :cheerlead

Sorry about that, feeling a little silly today...

Anyways, thanks for posting your thoughts on this. When I first downloaded this I had a really hard time sitting through it, as you said the fact is that this is as real as it gets and unsettling. Plus I didn't even think about it until you said, this was just another day for the butchers and watching them it was no big deal while we the viewers are left squirming in our seats.

Have you watched Viva La Muerte yet?

I always feel silly :D

I understand how you feel, I even started wondering what the hell I was doing when I saw the first horse. This was even before it was killed. They walk with this big beautiful white horse, and I didn't even want to imagine what they were gonna do with it.

The camera watches everything, no cuts or anything, and it really messes with your head.
There's a scene where a bunch of sheeps are laying on their backs on a table, without heads, and they are all kicking. That animals do that, the kicking I mean, is nothing new, but it's so..real..that it feels surreal to see it.

Not yet. I have been so lazy since I got done with the moving, so I have mostly just watched TV (for the first time in a couple of years, unless I've been at a friends house, 'cause I hated our living room at moms place). I was gonna do it today, but I ended up cleaning and doing the dishes instead. lol.

Blasted chores! :cussing:

I do understand where you are coming from with the moving though, it just takes alot out of you and when you're done you just don't want to do a damn thing.

This looks extremely disturbing. I didn't know it was on the Eyes Without a Face DVD, I just sent that back to Netflix! I'll have to throw this on my list. I plan on checking it out pretty soon.

You should!
It's weird trying to push a film with animals being killed onto people, but I really think everyone should see this.

I know i couldnt sit and watch this and I know that I should as if you eat the meat you should be aware of the process but this would be too traumatic for me. I could watch humans being butchered all day but not the cute little animals.:shrugs:

Finally saw this short film last night. I can agree with Metapher that there's a beautiful quality to this film; mostly the narrative. Although, I couldn't help but feel a little uneasy inside, especially with the horse. :eek2:
